No one, in the X Factor's history (to my knowledge), has performed a song they have written themselves. That is not how the X Factor works. If (some) contestants are successful, they continue on to song writing careers and/or performing origional tracks. It's not possible for acts to write songs in the space of time given within the compettition.

Am I the only one who finds it ironic when a group of people (sheep?) are urged to buy a - admittedly very good - single (to get it to No.1 of the UK Christmas singles charts), when the lyrics of the said song espouse such an aggressive individualism?

I wouldnt descibe it as aggressive individualism but yes you are totally right. X Factor never demanded a sale off of anybody whereas this campaign is openly telling people what they should do and people respond to it because they have no genuine opinions of their own or an understanding of what pop culture means.
If an obscure band had released a great song which people had naturally listened to and bought themselves it would have meaning to beat x factor. The RATM campaign however is a sham.

Well it was more to do with the song than who profits from the sales. We could have bought a song by a small recording company, we aren't going to make Cowell or Sony any less minted doing that, they're still going to be the big evil manufacturers of music that they are. How the fuck does Simon get richer? There's no way in hell Sony paid him anymore money for losing to Rage. The label will simply keep the money, to invest into future artists. Otherwise the proceeds that Rage got go to some charity.
