  • Alpha waves are brainwaves between 8 to 12 HZ. and are commonly associated with relaxed meditative states as well as brain states associated with suggestibility.

In an experiment in 1969, Herbert Krugman monitored a person through many trials and found that in less than one minute of television viewing, the person's brainwaves switched from Beta waves-- brainwaves associated with active, logical thought-- to primarily Alpha waves.

  • @greenish4 the children never remove their eyes from their subject. their gaze is fixed without interruption. doesn't that seem peculiar, even for an adult?

  • I think they are seeing a movie by G. Reggio :-)

  • Those who say that children look the same when they hear stories or watch theater and have similar actions are mistaken or observing the wrong age child. Many studies have shown that even infants physically and mentally interact to forms of art that involve human connections. However, children are at there highest dendrite production by the age of three and If these interactions have not been reinforced before this age, then of course they would have no reaction to art and story telling beca

  • he should have cut the first 1.22----rest is ok

  • Kids learning the theory. When this video ended, they tried out the practice from what they learned. We could fill it with useful learning, but we got money to make and minds to control. Let's teach these kids how to be a good consumers, without any thoughts about questioning anything outside the box.

  • I agree with Reggio's point here completely, though I'm not convinced he's making it as clearly as he thinks. I'm pretty sure if you filmed children watching something "real," or adults reading a particularly entertaining book or listening to an engaging story, the reactions would be about the same. I love his "trilogy," but this seems sort of disingenuous, despite how much I'd love to think otherwise.

  • @cd332 lol, it's what the audience sees when they look at Dane Cook.

  • This sounds like another Philp Glass composition (the music). I guess that isn't a surprise considering Godfrey had him score all the Qatsi films. LOL

  • I'm not advocating for TV, but I would like to see a video of children listening to someone tell a story. Would it look similar to this?

  • @greenish4 yes, I think it would be very different. Well, take a look at this. I guess is worth the reflection: watch?v=hTi4wuW-vXA

  • @greenish4 exactly

  • TV turns you into Americans.

  • I had those exact same expressions watching this. WTF??

  • Thanks for uploading this video! I've been a fan of Reggio for a long time but had never seen this... I kept thinking how weird it was to be watching people watching. Do I look like that right now?

  • @smitty121981

Probably not. Having to constantly and actively interact with one's computer tends to prevent the human mind of descending into the semi-comatose state it can fall into when one mindlessly watches television. These days, when I watch TV, I making a point of actively trying not to fall into that state...

  • Video killed the radio star ;)

  • @SuperSayjinElite: The music track is Philip Glass' "Facades" composed 1981, originally for director Reggio's Koyaanisqatsi film and other of the trio of like films. Highly recommended you see at least all of the original Koyaanisqatsi c1980 [In Youtube; have no distractions while viewing these] and then the third film Naqoyqatsi 2001. You may enjoy much in similar music, the films images (all without any narrative) will shock and teach much.

  • @cosmiclight hello my friend had proof the film is very emotional piano music with 27-year-old woman involved in all sections, he began piano music scenes, I said my name, who is playing the music that you'd like that? I

  • "How is this 'evidence'? I see kids taking in information and storing it."

I see kids staring, drooling, and twitching. My child does not look like this when she reads or "takes in information."

These children are trapped. They literally cannot look away.

  • i wonder whether they're watching tv or looking in the mirror

  • I got to this video from a link on Mental Floss and they said the kids were watching Dumbo. What it doesn't say is what part? If it was the Pink Elephants part then yeah.. I'm pretty sure I had that WTF look on my face too!!

  • what is this about

  • What the f*** is this song called?

  • so what do i look like right now while goggling at the monitor

  • pretty heavy music for children. Is this producer trying to freak them out?

  • @jasonwebmaui the music was added after, I think they were watching a Disney movie, possibly fantasia.

  • Everybody talks and theres 100 sides to each story.

This movie shows something for an entire TV session.

My "facts": they drool dumb. Drooling isn't good. At each 10 seen things you must do one. Hundreds and thousands and millions and billions of images and 1000 words for each image. If you don't do things with your body, -brainwashed-.

  • I don't think this is really the film "Evidence". The music is "Facades" by Philip Glass, which was intended for a scene in Koyaanisqatsi and was very unlikely to have been used in the film Evidence.

  • A very thoughtful film

  • I see the SAME LOOK on kids being read books, kids in class, kids watching live theater... YOU'RE ALL OVERREACTING.

  • @AgentBeryllium

Exactly! I read a novel a day and don't watch TV, but I look like that when I'm reading.

  • @parasitex5 novels are the same. :( . Don't read fiction.

  • @AgentBeryllium Great bunch of playful happy children you surround yourself with. Thats the point of the film. Where are young people growing up/into?

  • it wouldnt be so bad if they'd run more educational stuff on tv, the ratio of informative tv to entertainment is bad imo, entertainment that isnt entertaining even, its dull

  • Isnt this essentially what ADULTS look like staring at our computer screens everyday...one blog after another...one google page after another??? Change the music and Im certain many of us would change our perception for what exactly this is evidence. TV can be a very healthy learning assistance since we connect so much of the world through it. Like everything, it's with moderation and parental guidance that determine the effect of technology.

  • @teepee35 lol! ur right. Ironically, this is what i look like while watching philip glass vids.

  • sneslord, this is evidence for the impact that television can have on children. it is not an indictment of the moving image per se, but rather a question posed to the audience -- if children are to be raised with television as a major part of their lives, what do we think is useful and constructive viewing? what is dangerous to their livelihood, confidence, and creativity? this film serves as an open-ended question, not as a stock opinion.

  • I killed my TV.

Is TV intended to aid my intellectual or spiritual growth? Hell no! it's called "programming" for a reason! 5/5*

  • @MockEmpire Tele-Ban

  • c quoa sa lol

  • How is this "evidence"? I see kids taking in information and storing it. What do you expect them to do when they are watching something? Whittle wood? Knit a scarf? Small children make especially strange faces when they are taking in information, but adults zone out too! Remember, art does not equal science. Is seeing jesus' face on a piece of toast "evidence" of God? If you answered yes then you have the appropriate level of mental atrophy to continue watching this film.

  • hey meathead ! the AMA doesnt even acknowledge TE-levi-SION and the approx.10000 violent images most kids see before the age of 8 as having any effect on their development(or lack thereof) it is not listed in the top 100!!!...and no tv does not induce an alpha state within 7 sec eh..no these faces dont suggest a passive and suggestive state and we all know 90% of tv involves creative and critical thinking right? SNESLORD you are neither scientist nor artist !

  • @BestofYTChannel what a douchebag

  • @wxstatic haha yeah... who does that?

  • This is profound.. no words just pain.

  • This is what my kids look like when they're reading, watching a play, listening to a story, or looking out a car window.

  • This is bullshit!!! We should film ourself watching this crap and see how we look... It's a beautiful film but making it a negative critic of media is stupid.

  • As usual, Godfrey Reggio's speechlessness has left me speechless & awash in a sea of emotions, which could quickly become overwhelming were it not for the magical & almost healing way in which the photography is high/low lighted by the music of Philip Glass. These two sure do flirt with perfection on an alarmingly regular basis. Astounding.

  • mirror staring

  • Beautiful film, but I refuse to interpret this film as a negative critique. These kids are captured intensely focusing on what they're watching. Their brains are taking in information the viewer can't see. Of course they look "drugged" or under some influence, but the case is, they're watching Dumbo. I recall watching Dumbo at that age, and how it made me cry because of how it showed me intense sentiment for my mother's love. The director has no message here, just knee-jerk "disapproval".

  • very powerful video . sends shivers down my spine

  • oh my god

thats exactly what my cousin looks like when she watches tv

  • Yes it is

  • kids need nature in there lives to be mentally and physically healthy, TV is probably the furthest most point from anything natural. powerful piece of film making.

  • There is no proof of that at all. What kids DO need are loving parents and an opportunity for mental growth via proper learning materials and direct access to the right tools. I have many friends that never left an urban environment until they were adults. They are perfectly healthy. I have 3 friends that grew up on a farm and each of them suffer from some form of social anxiety. One of them hasn't had a relationship last more than 2 months for as long as I've known her.

  • What is your definition of "perfectly healthy"?

  • @SNESLord3000 go back to playing videogames, nerd. SNELord. LOL

  • @chris8702, your comment should begin with the words "SPOILER ALERT".

  • I this is brilliant, and I also think it's propaganda. It's artistically stunning, but extremely manipulative. The use of music makes for a very creepy experience. While I do think that it is harmful for kids to watch a lot of television, this film goes far beyond that. It's like the kids have become zombies or aliens. The film itself is a great object lesson in the power of media to grab minds and emotions. It's masterful, but don't be so easily swayed by it.

  • "I this is brilliant" clearly should have been "I think this is brilliant"...

  • I agree making friends is important and the independent development of those relationships is important. But first and foremost I want to understand who they're socializing with and what are the activities. No surprises there, just parenting. However, some people think leaving their children at school or with friends to just "hang out" is the end of it. That's fine for them. BTW, does anyone else in this thread have kids?

  • this was scare me.

  • Threw my TV away 3 years ago. My 7 year has been playing the violin and reading like mad ever since. I have to be careful what he reads though as that can be just as bad. The publishers and the broadcasters are one in the same.

  • just dont steal his childhood, and the "will to play" of every human being. learning to be an adult is easy... hard is to learn again to be a kid.

  • I'm sure your kid definitely won't grow up to be sheltered.

  • Perhaps, but he is being raised by his parents and not the state or mainstream media. The risk is a small price to pay.

  • To be raised by parents is not necessarily better (nor worse). Eitherway, it's often a parent who buys a television when there is one.

  • Spoken like a non-parent or a detached one. There's no substitute for a loving guardian. The state can't love. Society can't love. At best they can clothe and feed.

  • It's true, research on surviving children-soldiers in Africa shows that those who had guardian that loved them where able to recover and become able members of society, the others did not. This was the ruling factor, psychologist's treatment didn't even count if the child hadn't a loving guardian.

  • true, but there one can also love too much. sometimes you just gotta loosen up the leash and let the kid experience life. what happens when your child becomes interested in meeting new people but hasn't learned any of the social skills to do so? that's the sort of stuff that cannot be found in a book.

  • Exactly. Television isn't experience. It's not even a reasonable facsimile. If a child wants TV and a cable subscription, let them buy it. Don't ask me to set the example of bringing that crap into my own home.

  • to be honest, i wasnt exactly agreeing with you. i agree with you that a child should be well-rounded (violin, reading, etc) but as

ninja1dalbem said, it would be wrong of you steal your child's childhood. to my point, if that were the case, he or she would not develop social skills or confidence in a group setting. kids do have to be kids. look at michael jackson, working since he was a child and now all that guy wants is a childhood. the effects can be detrimental.

  • I don't know MJ. I've never met him or spoken with him. I don't know anybody who has. I have met a lot of people who think they know him though.

  • seriously, you're very strange and almost fanatical about not allowing your child to watch tv, go out, etc. honestly, if your kid wants to watch tv, he would have to purchase it himself? that's nuts, what are you going to do make him work at the age of 5 so he can watch cartoons? seriously, you're sick

  • So I should indulge my child with any want he has, regardless of how I feel about it? My last comment continues below by accident, but no matter. You have resorted to name calling. And, as I'm willing to bet, you have no children only an opinion and a keyboard.

  • no one said anything about indulging your child with anything he wants. what was said was do not steal his childhood. you said he would have to buy cable himself in order to watch tv? that's sick. and i do not have children, but you do not need to have a child in order to know when someone is an extremist such as yourself. i never said to neglect your child or to not know what he is doing or who he's with. but do not halt your child's life because you're scared he will fall and get scraped.

  • Television watching=childhood? Or perhaps no television in my home and my own choice not to pay for broadcast tv is extreme. Our child(ren) have the resources to purchase most things they would like (including tv and a cable plan). They watch television at friends and relatives homes. They know what they are "missing". They their parent's choices don't have to be the same as theirs. I try to present the choices to them objectively and let them decide, that's all. What choice were you given?

  • you obviously do not understand anything that anyone has been posted to you. and to let you know i have had every choice and opportunity imaginable. my parents are not wealthy and we were happy and that is probably i have had the opportunity to play rugby all over the world and because i have finished medical school already. what exactly do you do other than give your child a headache?

  • i was raised without tv and it was ok

  • Exactly, parents are often too proud to see the damage they can be inflicting to society as a whole. And again eitherway, not every parent have a healthy mind (altought they always judge to have).

But I agree that mass media is terribly employed.

  • I think this was a very power observation and demonstration of how perverse TV "Programming" is, nobody wants to engaged in conversation with children, they would rather shut them up with the electronic mother and father that is the TV, children can recognise the logos of over 300 corporations but can't name 10 plants or 20 fruits, we are totally disconnecting our children from nature so how will they understand it, we are doomed, this path has no place for humanity, the singularity is coming.

  • the clip shows how TV can make up the mind of its watchers, but doesnt says that TV programming is necessarily perverse... But I agree 100% with what you say. I just dont think it's right to point the finger at these kids - the problem is always with the parents.

  • its probably by philip glass, he does most of reggios films. if that helps.

  • I love it.

How can I find out the name of this composition? I really, really want to know.

  • It is: Glasspiece # 2 coming from the cd "Dancpieces" of Philip Glass

  • well I guess that leaves me to go try this experiment on myself to see how stupid i really look. why in the fuck isnt information or studies like these widely avalible to the public.

  • Because it's retarded?

  • why is it retarded?

  • Masterpiece.

  • subtle

    reflective

  • The kids were watching Dumbo on Television. Maybe, just maybe, you look like this watching television too??

  • HINT: Try watching the video with the music off. It is a lot easier read the kids' faces that way.

Reggio does seem to be an anti-western technologist at heart.

  • I saw kids whose minds were fully absorbed.

(It would have been nice if their parents had taught them to keep their mouths closed, though.)

  • what are you scared of teeth or something?

  • hahaha

its kind of eery to think of the idea of parents teaching kids to keep their mouths closed. i wonder how much it subtly encourages silence and censored speech/ideas

  • that was a huge waste of my time.

  • uncomfortably brilliant. observant,we dont have much of that anymore im afraid.

  • Evidence of what? Kids look silly when they watch TV? It's what's going on inside that counts. People look blank when they're reading too. People pull funny faces when they're exercising and growing stronger. This film is pointless and Adbusters is clutching at straws.

  • I have never seen people reading making these faces. Or while exercising. When reading they appear to be concentrating/analyzing. when exercising- what do you know? exerting and/or straining. Notice neither of those were zombie, zoned out, or "not all there" faces.

  • Are you that dense?

  • ohh shit ohhhhhhhhhh shit do i look like that when i watch tv.

    hahahaha

ill cut tv watching my half,. haha the girl crying has wax lips.

  • what is the music??? i need this song¡¡¡

  • don't know...

    for sure, from Philip Glass

  • Façades. You can find it in his album Glassworks.

  • In the "About this video" you should put a better description of how the film was made and what the children were watching, what the main premise was, etc. That would eliminate some of the more redundant responses.

  • true, although I don't think I would have benefited as much the film if I'd known beforehand what the film was about

  • exactly.

    great film

  • wtf is this :S:S:SS:S:?!?!?

  • Comment removed

  • though it must be added, that what i recall is what i was told by our communication professor in art academy.

  • People often use such stuff to promote their own ideas. According to the official site, it was good old Dumbo.

  • I heard they were actually watching Dumbo lol

  • ok thanks,

  • ok, i misread, im glad you like my arguement 1000 life points though does sound sarcastic :P

  • trouble with the net sometimes, hard to read what people mean :)

  • it wasnt a question in that sense , i looked it up it doesnt say what effect this film was, i was asking if the purpose of the film was to create a paradox

  • yay!

  • the irony is that we are focusing on the screen on focusing on people focusing on a screen, its a paradox, is this a deliberate device?

  • fascinating, it is a paradox, chanka shut up,

  • its not really a paradox so much as a work that involves the participation and self involvement of the audience in meaning creation. the viewer who is aware of themselves and the activity by which they absorb and comprehend media and reality, will be able to make this conceptual leap and complete the meaning making process by analogy (them-kids). a work that can be successful in this regard is dope

  • dumbo, how do you know this?

  • The Eyes...

  • Increíble gracias Godfrey Reggio

  • children are focusing on something. how terrible. i'm glad we young adults can't focus for more than 5 minutes on one thing.

  • Producers hold kid's attention today with lots of fast editing and bright objects and colors. So they're not really focusing "for more than 5 minutes on one thing." They're focusing indefinetly on many different new things. The teletubies are one of the first things I've seen that is deliberately slow. Aside from that, I haven't seen anything for kids on TV that's slow.

  • its more about that kids are wasting there youth on this, look at there faces I've seen people concentrating before

  • focusing on something and having your soul vampirised are not the same thing!

  • why am i not surprised to find people criticizing this clear picture of television effects on us. oh, because tv is great!

  • In amongst the host of stereotypically purile, insipid and imbecilic responses, some people just watched, smiled and went about their business, perhaps more circumspect to the world of manipulation that we live in...

  • You forgot to include the word "whilst."

  • No I didn't.

  • these kids are all watching tv as they're being filmed. and tv sucks i all their laughter, curiosity, noise, mess, playing, experiencing the world. think of what comes to your mind when you think about "kids" in earlier times, without tv. maybe our idea of childhood and kids of today has to be shifted to what is shown here. i see kids' bodies but don't see any kids in them. just my thoughts about this thing...

  • "tv sucks i all their laughter, curiosity, noise, mess, playing, experiencing the world"

you could say that about books too...are you anti-book?

btw, if tv sucks, why you on youtube you buffoon.

  • because i'm one of them.

  • you are a fool.

  • i agree, substrom. there is a lot of stuff that children can focus on. the ability to focus on something is no disadvantage.

  • these kids look bored, they must be watching american idol.

  • These children grew up to be us. Youtubers.

  • what makes television to our brain and the brain of children?

  • Is this meant to be profound? I found it dull and superficial. Without the poignant soundtrack you have a bunch of kids staring at something. I bet if you took them to a circus they would have the same expressions, mouths open and concentrating.

  • "a bunch of kids staring at something" - yet you stared right back!

  • I think this is just a peice of art up for interpretation by the perceiver of the art. I'm not so sure there is anything politically profound, or otherwise, in regards to the film. However, I'm not familiar with this film outside of it being posted here. I think the name of the film might be more of a comment on the viewers (us) rather than the subjects of the film.

  • Hopefully, those kids weren't subjected to watching a triple feature of Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi and Naqoyqatsi.

  • Thank you so much for posting this! I have been searching for this short every so often since I saw the qatsi series five years ago.

  • I think it's the negative effects of advertising...

  • They're watching "Dumbo".

  • You're really ugly for making a comment like that!

  • Many thanks to Squelchy2k for posting this. The only Reggio film I hadn't seen. Fans of the genre might like to know that Ron Fricke and Reggio are collaborating on a new project called SAVAGE EDEN.

  • actually, ron isnt working on the next film. we have something in the works however that should be interesting!
