  • wow the smoke coming out of there will probably melt an inch of the ice in the arctic or the ant arctic.. aww poor polar bears! lol

  • @XHORNBYX there is a strange affection to seeing smokey engines starting up

  • lol that start up sound sounds exaclly like the hornby dcc sound class 50 start up well done hornby!

  • @XHORNBYX its certainly bit of a smoker

  • Great upload, great sound !

  • @eezy1972 thank you kindly

  • Love the V-16 engine sound !!

  • @conkeroonee i have learned something new i did not know i was a v16

  • This was a warm engine to start with...(which is why you could see the heat haze) and why it started so quickly. English Electric engines when starting from cold chug out lots of white smoke, which is actually un-burned fuel, there is no pre-heater or glow plug. See some cold start videos elsewhere, to see the difference. The low roar you speak of, is actually an electric engine oil pump, which circulates oil around the engine for about a minuit before the engine is turned.

  • @smiffy1071 you sound like a man that knows ,thanks

  • @smiffy1071 50s do not have an electric oil priming pump. They have a hand oil pump. Could have heard the fuel lift pump. Priming the fuel system...

  • @CRISIS550166 possibly but the exhaust was smoking slightly unless it had been started before i got there

  • Everything about large logo 50s looks and sounds right...

  • @Raver50032 You're not wrong chap!

  • Nice Video! if you like class 50's you should take a look at British Railways - Class 50 on facebook where you can upload your own videos and share your own pictures.... in the future we can also look at providing upto date news on the last remain class members, lets build a class 50 community

  • Nice video, good clear sound and brings back lots of memories. When you say in your upload description "...smoke as I expected ..." do you perhaps mean "as I would have liked......"? Thanks for sharing

  • @055deltic thank you

  • what coaches has it got?

  • @Arrivatrains1 i am far from a expert but i am sure some one will tell us

  • @Arrivatrains1 im not expert as well but does look like MK1s with Commonwealth Bogies version.

  • @jakelee16 i will have to leave this question for someone with more knolage to answer

  • how do you know when they have started?

  • @theteacuphead when it sounds like its running on all cylinders

  • 50015 was fitted with a pre-heater as the smoke from the cold engine was unbearable.Must have annoyed the neighbours!

  • @napiermaniac i bet i would do

  • that low roaring noise is either fuel pump or starters for the engine

  • @burghill1979 the exhausts was smoking for half a hour b4 it started and a strange noise coming from the engine ,so i took it vwas some sort of pre heat

  • @ROOSTER1067 it would have been, it had the pre heat fitted last year :)

  • @ACTractionLTD yes i thought it was preheat ,the exhausts were smoking before the engine started

  • @ACTractionLTD Can you explain me how that pre heater works? Thanks

  • @CreRay pre-heat is basically a device fitted to the loco to warm the engine up during Priming and Starting, it can wear down the batteries alot quicker, because if you have a cold engine and you try 3 or 4 times to get it to turn over you just going to wear the batteries down, now if the engine is warm it can turn over pretty quickly. it warms the diesel up when it cold as diesel is alot thicker in cold weather and thus harder to combust.

    Hope this helps you :)

  • @ACTractionLTD Thanks, but how does this specific pre heater work? Normally the engine oil and sometimes the coolant is warmed up, but the poster noted a heat haze coming from the stack which could not be caused by heating oil or coolant.

  • @CreRay i am far from a expert ,just reporting what i saw but there is people on here who will know and can answer you question better then i can

  • @CreRay the locomotive may have recently just been shut down not being caused by the Preheat, but by the Soot and other crap in the Exhaust from heat of the engine

  • @ACTractionLTD quite possibly

  • @CreRay do trains not have glow plugs like diesel car engines ???????????

  • @ROOSTER1067 Generally, no.
