I often wonder why he didn't scuttle the boat, take to the lifeboat, and radio for help, claiming it sank from damage in heavy seas, like Nigel Tetley's trimaran. No one would have blamed him, and deception would have been a fraction of what he ultimately attempted. But no one should judge the man harshly his decisions.
In part, because he was radioing in false positions. If he scuttled the boat, everyone would have wondered why he was still in the South Atlantic when he was supposed to be on the other side of the world.

A very tragic story but Crowhurst was a FOOL for betting his future and his family's on an endeavor such as this with so little chance of success.
