I think Conan could have kept the Tonight Show, had he retained the edge he brought to Late Night, and scrapped all those stupid "big-budget" jokes with cars and watermelons. Conan was the man on Late Night, even better than Dave. It's too bad he didn't stay with what made his name.

Conan only gets that money if NBC breached their side of the deal. In his contract if NBC had reneged on the agreement then Conan gets the money. If Conan had formally quit then NBC would not have had to pay Conan and his staff that 40 million. So , basically , its a penalty to NBC if they breached. I guess Leno staying longer would've actually been a breach as Artie hypothesized at 0:40 ..Conan MIGHT've been playing dumb on not knowing about the 40 mill part. I'm not sure.
