I own 3 guinea pigs who I normally keep in a large cage indoors. They fight over food alot and the fattest one, Coco usually wins XD

If people use a 'cage' or a small boxed-in area, it's hard to stop them from pooping all over. Hoochie's poop area is 3x1 foot big. they poop mainly when they eat. So if you put 2folded up beach towels down, then plop their grass there, they will forage and poop in that area. If you find them poopin more in a certain area, they've marked that as their 'toilet' area, so put the towels right there.

@dakilless67 Not necessarily. My guinea pig makes the exact same noises whenever he hears the fridge opening, or hears his food bag crumple. Sometimes it just means they want food and they want it NOW gosh darn it! :)

message me and I'll help you to train them to use a 'toilet'. My cavy doesn't even live in a cage or a boxed in area. Free roam of the house - no poop anywhere but her toilet.

They are pooping mainly in one corner. So take old beach towels and double them up and lay them in that area. Put some poops on the towels. They release a hormone that makes them poop when they eat, so put piles of grass near their new 'toilet' and they eat and poo on those towels, you can shake it off outdoors and wash the towels. I leave TP near my GP toilet and soak up the pee when I see Hoochie 'go'. This way, I only have to wash the bedding once a week! No stink!

1. never feed them lettuce- they get constipated & crabby (only dark romaine/cos lettuce is ok). NEVER spinach -it has too many minerals and cavies get kidney stones and die from them. Freeze grapes, watermelon rind and banana peels in a freezer baggie. Then give those as treats to train and reward your cavy. Use a toothbrush to groom them; they loved being groomed. Use Mineral Oil to massage into hairless areas once a week to keep their natural bugs from making them itchy.

also, if you take some old shoeboxes, and cut out little doors/holes and place them around the room, they'll have a shelter to run into and hide. They are prey and therefore they are very skittish. They evolved at the base of the Peruvian mountains, so they used to forage for grass at dusk and dawn. If you turn the lights down, they'll feel safer and not 'exposed'. Their main staple is grass; they'll eat it all day. So use the treats to your advantage rather than to spoil
