Father and son (Antonio and Alberto Ascari) died 4 days after surviving a dramatic crash, both left behind two children and one wife both had crashed fatally at the exit of fast but easy left-hand corners and both father and son had won 13 championship GP.
Alberto Ascari died on May 26, 1955, at the age of 36. Antonio Ascari was also 36 when he died, on July 26, 1925 (Alberto was only 4 days older). Both father and son had won 13 championship Grand Prix and drove car number 26. Both were killed four days after surviving serious accidents and on the 26th day of the month. Both had crashed fatally at the exit of fast but easy left-hand corners and both left behind a wife and two children.
Ascari's fatal crash at Monza 4 days later remains a complete mystery. For no apparent reason, the car left the track on the back straight and somersaulted into the trees. One of the theories is that Ascari was still suffering from concussion as a result of the Monaco crash, and blacked out behind the wheel. Since no one witnessed the accident, we will never know what really happened.
Yes there was. In 1965 Paul Hawkins driving a Lotus went into the harbour at the very same point. Like Ascari he survived with little personal damage. He was killed around four years later in a sports car race.
what's up with number 4 it's creepy...Ascari dies for days after this accident...his father dies four days after a seperate accident, this Paul Hawkins guy dies 4 years after his crash at Monaco and you +4 votes on this comment.
Ascari was very superstitious indeed. Normally he would never go out in any helmet other than his "lucky" blue one. In the Monaco accident the strap was broken and he had sent it for repair. At Monza three or four days later, to the utter astonishment of the other drivers, he asked to borrow Castellotti's helmet before testing the Ferrari sports car. Ascari crashed fatally on only his third lap.
Today his blue helmet is on display at the Donington Racing Car Collection in England.
