Auckland is a beautiful city. You love or you hate it.... or somewhere in the middle. Its a very laid back city where all the shops close "early". If you find your rhythm there though, its an awesome place to live.
Traffic, poor public transport (in the city and intercity), massive massive urban sprawl, humidity, poorly built and poorly insulated houses which means they get very damp and cold in winter (and lots of mould grows).
The good points are that it is improving greatly (look at any shots of it from the 80's), it does have 2000+ hours of sunshine a year, it does have a very nice coastline (but not nice beaches) and it is easy to drive to nice natural sites.
Yes I have! I very much like the beaches around the Mangawhai Heads area and Omaha. I also like Hot Water Beach too on the Coramandel Peninsula. =)
As far as beaches go, I was only referring to those in Auckland. NZ as a whole has some fantastic beaches. The beauty of a lot of them is in their seclusion compared to the crowded beaches you get in Europe.
It depends on what sort of beach you are looking for. The west coast beaches of Auckland such as Piha, Bethels, Anawhata, Muriwai etc are covered with black sand (hot to walk on during summer) and the waves are larger and rougher which usually attracts surfers. If you want better swimming beaches with whiter sand look at the East Coast Beaches of Auckland, e.g. Long Bay, Browns Bay, Red Beach or Orewa (where I live).
Failing these options explore the rest of NZ...there's plenty to choose from.
Some of that can be said for Glasgow, Scotland, too, and I loved living in that city! So gorgeous, but many houses are indeed just run down and just painted to look nice, then the mold comes out, and it's a total health hazard. Air pollution is really bad, too, and the weather contributes to that. I guess when you have a place that gets humid it can happen... it's a total shame, because the people are SO nice, too! Thanks for the heads up! Still want to visit though :)
