I am in this band now im only a shophmore but bradtaylor32 is right.
we just went to the Judson rockwt review yesterday and we placed 3rd place, I think I know why to, our marching is sloppy and our "covering down" is also sloppy. Hopfully we will make 1st at UIL this saturday since we have a new band director mrs.P :( i miss Leifeste
I marched in this band in the late 90's and am sorry to see this kind of show. It was a different band when I was in it. This show lacks power and punch and is a bit sloppy too. Hopefully the band cleans it up and gets back to entertaining the crowd next year instead of just entertaining the band parents.
let it be said that some of the late 90's NB bands could play, as demonstrated in BOA Regional scores and placements. However, that band NEVER marched anywhere near as well or did shows with the same level of complexity as the current group does. I prefer this band overall to what we did in the late 90's
I'd take solid, exciting playing over complex, well-marched sloppy shows any day. And not all of the marching in this show is real great. I see a number of spacing and "cover down" issues. Color guard is pretty messy too. I still think this band is terrific, just my opinion that turning marching band into one big concert band takes the flavor out of marching band. Plus the fact that you have to try and get players from the "lower" bands to play at the level of a top band, which is hard at times
despite being late 90's graduates, we're of vastly different mindsets. Perhaps my memory of Wesfield winning State and a BOA Regional in 1998 with this show is impregnated in my mind. We have different ideas of what "exciting" music is. I can say without a doubt music such as "Shenandoah Valley" "Devil Went Down To Georgia" and the likes appeal to me much less than music by Leonard Bernstein.
I'd rather not hear a band play any of the three examples you listed. I guess I just don't understand the reasoning for HS bands to play this kind of stuff. I say leave it to DCI. You don't ever hear college bands playing these kinds of shows. These days HS bands are pushing the limits in "artistry" and forgetting about enteraining the crowd at the game. That prob sounds blasphemous from a guy who holds a MM and spent many years in band, but I think a band should be powerful and precise first.
what is your proposed solution then? Particularly when it comes to players from the lower bands having to stretch themselves to play harder music? Frankly, I was bored to death in marching band without challenging music. And LHB's musical repertoire was the exact reason I skipped the experience altogether and participated in Symphony Band instead.
Marching band is already a challenge without overly difficult music. I got my kicks in marching band playing loud and high and being a part of a powerful machine. I traded that in the spring semesters for symphonic band, with a much different, but also enjoyed style.
Solution for lower band players? Same as always. 3rd tpt, 3rd bone, cymbals, etc. But when the bd has the whole trumpet line trying to play in unison a transcribed, complex flute melody from a symphony, it doesn't work.
im so very proud of you guys ...i wish i could of been there to see you but i have my own college band i have to attend to....i give you a good thumbs up on this performance allthough i am sorry you guys didnt make it to state

@Alavistaven2012 Sanctus/Agnus Dei from Leonard Bernstein's Mass. My band played a similar show. Completely different arrangement though.

It kind of makes me laugh that people bullshit P on youtube in comments about past shows.

I agree, but we got a new director, and the show this year is 100 times better. I'll be posting a vid soon.
