Until recently, I totally agreed with you on the disoriented/disorientated problem, but apparently the British form of the word is disorientated. Still don't like the way it sounds, but I'm no longer sure that it's 'wrong.'
I can't believe how ignorant you can be. How do you pronounce millimeter, centimeter, not to mention kilowatt, kilocycles? Try your "logic" on these.
Kilometers, millimeters, centimeters etc are units of measurement. Thermometers, speedometers, barometers, tachometers are devices, instruments, things you can actually hold in your hands. Hence a kilometer pronounced "clawmiter" would be a scientific instrument used to measure kills.
NOooooo kilo = 1000 times kilo_meter: 1000 times a meter -> therefore you pronounce it kilo ... meter __ your saying "kill_o_meter" (i know theres no 2 Ls) the mesuring device for kills thermometer is pronounced the way you do hence -> M_e_s_u_r_i_n_g device __ you drive me mental. if you massacre the metric system i am going to return the favor: orientaited orientaited orientaited
There is no such word as kilom-eter. There are meters, milli-meters, centi-meters, deci-meters, kilo-meters... - well, you get the idea. A meter is a meter. Multiples of one and portions of one add prefix's as modifiers, you don't just get to make up a whole new word!
You probably say ATM machine and PIN number too I bet??
sorry, but I don't think that's right. metre(length) is not a suffix, it's a unit. People don't say cen-TIM-uh-ter, they say CENtimeter. So it doesn't have to be pronounced the same as meter(measuring device). It's not even spelled the same.
