Your description is misleading. Polygamy at a time was NOT illegal, so there for was legal. Then they passed the law and the Government wanted to split up families and children already married in polygamist families. Why would ANYONE stop cohabitating??? Government breaking up families.
@tastefulphrasing wow, you know you can use the internet to look things up right? The USA made polygamy illegal in 1862. Mormons had been practicing it for over 20 years before that law was passed. Therefore making polygamy legal when they began practicing. If I had children by a wife I wouldn't abandon them because some law made my marriage illegal, but I would observe the law from there on.
