It took me a while to search the distant memory fog but suddenly it hit - I couldn't work out where I'd heard the organ riff before when listening to the Underworld song '8 ball'. Another compulsive song which I've played to death. Still love the Velvets - still love this song.
i'm just 5 years old and i think the Velvets play fine fine music and i like their rock and roll, their rock and roll, its all right, yeah, its all right.
I'm a foetus, and I think that the Velvets are the most under rated bands ever, kids today don't know what music is, they think music is a space ship or a type of rare bird or something :(
Fuck yes... This shit will rock your dumb ass till your head bleeds.... Just let that good stuff work it's way in there. Rock n' Roll is that sore joint... Rub it till it bleeds ;)
@superfuzzybigmuffy I have on heavy LSD. The guitar solo created an amazing experience that can't be described in words and the end kaleidoscoped, and of course time was nonexistent.
Talk about persistence of memory. Hadn't heard this for at least 35 years, yet could recall every lyric, every lick, every blast of indescribable joy that guitar strumming brings out from the depths of my being. I can smell cheap Mexican pot and incense, diluted with crisp morning spring air coming in through the tall DC row house window. How can such simple music be so incredibly evocative? The 60s and early 70s was just a fantastic time to be alive. Analogue music. Cheap rent. Guilt-free Sex.
@milnoid Neatly done, sir, neatly done. One of the unfortunate aspects of CDs is that this is so much shorter, and eliminates the interesting organ work that sounds so much like a skating rink. One can almost hear it echoing. I think that is what makes it so evocative. I guess the old world may be dead.
It isn't "Baby, be good, do what you should" it's "let it be good, do what you should." I thought it was those words for years but its not. Correctomundo en el espanol.
@rusty8mm When I was 11, no one I knew of even understood what formulaic even meant. I love how smart young people are today. It gives me hope. Really.
@rusty8mm 11 and bouncing about with words like formulaic. GTFO don't believe you and couldn't give a shit if you were still in nappys listening to this.
@rusty8mm In ten years you will look back at your eras music and find gold in it. Trust me it happens. I grew up with these guys, the Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Zeppelin, Queen, Bowie, etc. but love Kanye, Wizzy, Jay-z, Daft Punk, Muse, even Gaga today.
im only 16 and i absolutely love the velvets...i think that todays kids like lady gaga and beyonce only cuz they r just too lazy to explore the good music...:)
Yes the THIRD Album is the best V.U. album, now that time and age can put justice to everything that is old Candy Says/Pale blue eyes/What goes on /Beginning to see the light and the last song sing by Maureen Tucker ! blowing !
I don't know -- I was once of this opinion myself. Now I would have to admit to more of a partiality to "Loaded."
On the other hand, "White Light/White Heat" is the one that I think of when I think of the "Velvet Underground sound" -- nasty, raw, distorted, chunky.
A five minute song with a two and a half minute rhythm guitar solo outro. A masterpiece. Long live Lou! (Trivia? No cymbal crashes in this song. Mo Tucker often didn't use cymbals. One of the reason why the drumming sounds so primal and driving and pulsating and relentless. And she often used mallets instead of sticks; thus the THUD THUD. And she drummed standing up. Aw what the hell -- long live Mo too!)
dedicated to all sufferers of manic-depressive disorder, don't give up the fight against hopelessness, you are beautiful, and this song is telling you that inspite of the extreme moods.
@m74k3H I used to listen to this on an old stereo cassette machine while working in a photo darkroom, pitch black in there and when the instrumental part came on I'd plant the cassette player to my forehead so I got good stereo separation... never failed to bow me away.
The Velvets' finest IMHO (with possible exception of Coney Island Steeple Chase). I love those Spanish subtitles too. "Chica portate bien, haz lo que debes" . Yeah!!!
