good game, I played this when it came out, was hard as fuck too. also its the first game I can remember that has an actual "stealth" mode. I always played this with the knife & regular bow only, they don't make noise so they don't attract the enmies. never got to finish it though, game always froze up when I shot the chopper that tried to take you out.
Aaah the memories. The first full price game I bought for my Speccy after I got bored of the 10 Imagine Software games I got free with it. Can't believe I still remember that. Also amazingly I still remember what you have to do in Rambo, head up left get to the POW camp, rescue the POW and get to the chopper!!! as Arnie would say. A classic of its time.
Thanks for posting this. I played the MSX version of 'Rambo' which is actually a different game as it is more of an adventure instead of a shooter. Still this version looks nice to play too.
wow i played this when i was a youngster , nice to see it again , not a bad game when you look at its age . Thanks for putting this on bought back a few memorys.
I love the fact that you were probably not even born when this game came out. It was extremely difficult to master when it came out, with or without the joystick. You always got killed after blowing up the gate to the compound.
What you have got to remember is that if it was not for games companies and old computers such as this stretching the boundaries you would not have the great games and platforms of today.
Stay of the alcopops and think once in a while before slating the old skool sonny
@andycharger Dear oh dear, another clueless patronising commenter. I'm almost 30, the Spectrum is THE computer I grew up with - well actually the ZX81 first. This is the machine I loved for years, still do and have played more games for it than you could count on a hundred hands. Instead of doing hackneyed boring retro reviews, I give honest opinions from today's perspective as if you were talking about them to your mates down the pub. Look to YS if you want an 'honest' opinion from the time.
@collieuk If you loved the Spectrum and appreciated what computers of this era did for gaming, you would not slate it. Almost 30? what are you still telling people you are "something and three quarters".... People dont want to come on youtube to check out memories, only for people like you to mindlessly slate something. If you grew up with a spectrum and you are under 30, you were a maximum of 4 when this game came out so dont try that one sonny.
@andycharger Horses for courses. I'm not a preacher, I'm not going to praise the machine and the games, IT'S ALL BEEN DONE. Magazines, books, TV shows, 1001 other Youtube channels. The Speccy was great, yet by late 80s shite too. As were most of the games. We enjoyed them, made the most of them, but looking back, most of the games are pretty dire. Christ on a bike, even Space Invaders is boring as hell now. I present a non-serious alternative look at the retro scene, rose tinted glasses off.
Bad review. Its easy to pour post ironic scorn on a 25 year old game, but Ocean did a few very clever things with their whopping 48k of memory. It was the1st game I can remember to have destructable environments (the trees and huts blew up if hit by explosive weapons/granades). If you used knife/regular arrows you spawned less guards, so it had an element of stealth in the AI. The range of selectable weaponry itself was wider and than had been seen b4 on the zx too. It was the SplinterCell of 85
And yet no-one stumbling upon the game now could really care less. And yes it is easy to pour 'post ironic scorn' on a 25 year old game: that's the entire point. My comments are utterly irrelevant to today's world, as is the game itself. It if required any real effort to make a pointless video about an old game I wouldn't bother. That would make me a mad man or one of those annoying nerd type people you wanted to poke in the eye with a ruler during your school days.
Maybe if you reviewed it properly, more people would care. If you are happy being irrelevant, then thats just dandy, but why inflict your fail on the rest of the world? I mean, you couldnt even play the damn game properly! I have nothing against a wry sense of humour, or even an affected sense of ennui, but when its just used to cover up ignorance, it really doesnt work.
The idea is to get to the compound and rescue the POWs, then you escape on the helicopter, pursued by the enemy chopper.
It was probably explained on the inlay card, but everyone would just tape the games from their mates at school, so no-one knew what we were supposed to do.
I always tried to shoot down the enemy chopper which would just crash the game, apparently all I had to do was fly across the border.
Realistic review, cos we never had any idea on what we were supposed to do.
Occasionally I look up the instructions before the review, usually just afterward when making the description. I think it was fair to say probably not even half the games I played for the machine back in the day I knew what I was doing, mostly due to the mates passing on copied tapes you mentioned, or the fact magazines seldom explained the game instructions when they were on the covertape. Or I was just ignorant to the instructions and just played the game as I found it.
bad bad bad game

This game was pretty crap even back then - one of many lazy movie tie-ins that graced the 8-bit and 16-bit machines.

This actually looks more fun that Far Cry 2.
I got sick of shooting up a check point, and when I came back, it was like I'd never been there and killed everyone already.

when playing Far Cry 2 i was sick of dying of Malaria, being ill is simply not fun.
