As great as this audio is I encourage those who really appreciate Williams' work, to hear this work performed live. I did so last weekendin St. Louis. The orchestra was divided with an octet of strings sitting at the rear of the main where the horns would normally be. This produced a subtle distant effect on those parts in which the octet played. The principals in each string section played as a quartet with solos by the principal viola and concert master. On the whole it was quite amazing.
The first time I listened to this piece of music I got nervous. I got emotional. It was so perfectly amazing. This is the single most beautiful piece of music ever written.
How awful if I were the composer of this, and seeking to better my composing missed out on such exquisite beauty as I searched for faults amongst perfection!
When I hear this, I do not think of people. I can only think of soft, green earth, rolling hills, skies, and sunrays. There is no humanity here, there is only peace.
You're welcome, although I think RVW deserves all of the credit! There's just something about this, the acoustics give it an ethereal quality, it's really something special.
I remember reading a quote on wikipedia [yes, I only get my info. from the best ;) ], where someone said listening to Vaughan Williams' music you don't know if you're listening to something very old or very new.
And that's exact feeling I get from this, it's familiar, yet it's not completely.

Caught this on Classic FM today....it actually gave me palpitations. Haven't had that since Barber's Agnus Dei. Sublime stuff.

Very Nice. but I would highly recommend checking out William Boughton conducting the English string orchestra. Its on the "Nimbus" label.
