I don't have the time to translate it all, but the main idea is that these people showing up in this tournament are (as the announcer said around the 3:00 minute mark) "Warriors that have shown up in the history books". I'm not sure if they're fictional or not, but their abilities are. Goku is just a guest. The little pictures they show of real people are people dressed like these fighters for the 'historical' feel.

Akira Toriyama hand picked the voice. He wanted Goku to sound boyish to match his goofy hillbilly personality, and women do boys voices in anime just like how a 70 year old woman is Luffy in One Piece. And Goku isn't supposed to be a super hero like Superman . Hes like that in the English version to appeal to Americans but in the original Japanese DBZ Goku is more like some legendary God-like figure. If you watch enough Jap DBZ you'll understand why he sounds the way he does ;D

What's wrong with you people? Hating on fans of each other's favorite anime and countries? Yes, Dragon Ball was heavily based off Journey to the West and Dragon Boy. And yes, Hokuto no Ken has a shocking resemblance to the late episodes of Dragon Ball, a popular 1980s style of anime/manga artwork. You morons are both right, but you just talk hella mess to each other, probably because you are aggravated outcasts who both spend too much time with your hand. Grow up.

Hokuto no ken started(fist of the north star) in 1983

Toriyama hiself said that Hokuto no ken made him do dragon ball z etc, HnK was his source of inspiration. Thank for being wrong :)

It was part of a "Man of the Year" special in Japan, where, from what I recall, they toast some Japanese guy at a ceremony.
