The fire pit you are referring to is actually a replica of a Native American medicine wheel built by the rancher who owned the Fresno property before it became part of Big Bend Ranch State Park in January 2009. Locals gathered around it for ceremonies. Today, visitors hiking next to Fresno creek can see it, although it is not accessible to the public. The owner, whose name was Sleeper, did raise mules that he sold as pack animals to ranchers in Texas and Colorado.
