@youtubalisation A string is probably tethering the paperclip close enough to the magnet to be attracted whilst being far enough not to stick.

@quantumforce100 an electromagnet works identically to a permanent magnet.

Any magnetically permiable material will have that effect, simply diverting and absorbing the field, not really shielding in the conventional sense and ultimatly will become magnetic itself.
