Discovered this song listenning to tv audio station. You'd think this would have been one of John Denver's biggest hit!!?? However, it didn't take me long to buy it off Itunes... my dad loved this song and used to sing it with acoustic guitar, it was so beautiful. He is passed on now, but I am forever greatful to John Denver for making this song and for my dad finding it and making it my most cherished memory. ; )

@clausi666 suggest you look at some other John Denver sites on you Tube. There are a couple about the accident. The analysis is that it was an accident because of the arrangement of the fuel switch in his experimental plane. I think he is talking more about his separation from his Annie.
