Equality isn't a foolish goal or worthless goal. Sowell is merely disputing that the state coercion is the best way to achieve equality. He advocates voluntary action by individuals in a free market.
This man is a great thinker of our time. How precious that we have someone like him to speak some sanity unlike morons who perpetuate hate like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. What a contrast in class and intelligence.
Whattttt, I don't get his argument - a kid comes up to him and asks him to clarify something in his textbook, and that leads him to say, "see this is what affrimative action has done to us" ? I don't get it...
@PakiPride51 Wow, you really did miss it. He points out that before affirmative action took hold, he got respect for his achievements as a black man, because everyone said "If this guy is black and he can do this he must really be something." After affirmative action people became condescending to him thinking that he was inferior to other professionals because they assumed he was a beneficiary of affirmative action and not truly qualified.
As a high achieving African American I feel that Affirmative Action has made it so that I have to be better than my colleagues to be considered equal with them because many of them will suspect that I get any position that I do have because of my skin color. The idea that I "need" extra help to be lifted to any position is absurd. All that I need is for individuals not to disqualify me because of my color. If I have that then all is well.
Affirmative action is coat given to a cold child in winter,it is now summer, the child is now a man & he is still wearing the coat he was given as a child. He is told he still needs to wear the coat in the summer even though he doesn't need it anymore. The coat is too small, its hot & no longer serves its purpose, however, the man is told if he removes the coat he will be cold again. The man has bought into this ideology & believes he owes his loyalty to the coat maker. I want to remove that coat!
Thomas Sowell is light years ahead of chumps like Charlie. I can see Rose with that "deer in the headlights" look when Sowell speaks. He's struggling to keep up.
liberals love to feel sorry for people. once someone has risen above and become truly equal they can't pity them anymore! they need to keep people thinking they need their help to achieve because once they stop thinking they need help and just help themselves they see the lies they have been told.
This man is as much an Uncle Tom as Obama is a conservative. From the year 1990 and moving forward . . . Being a Democrat OR a Republican is as productive as being a tomato at a lemonade stand.
This man is as much an Uncle Tom as Obama is a conservative. From the year 1990 and moving forward . . . Being a Democrat OR a Republican is as productive as being a tomato at a lemonade stand.
Thomas Sowell is just another usless incle tom on the plantation payroll..Affirmative Action is needed because of the racism in the workplace and white women recieved more from affimative action than any other group..But sowell never mentions that....
Can anyone tell me how "Economics and Politics of Race", "Ethnic America", "Race and Cultures", "Migrations and Culture", and "Conquest and Culture" are any different from one another? Which one is better?
I love Thomas sowell's books. I was wondering which book I should get: Race and Cultures, Ethnic America or Economics and Politics of Race. How are these books different and which one should I get?
I see you read or scanned thru Shakedown by Ken Timmerman, ahahahahahah. I like guys like you, predictable to a flaw! I for one am in no position to tell Blacks people who their leaders should be, and you should be mindful of that type of arrogance too. Moreover, a platform of being Anti Obama is nothing to neither brag about nor strive towards. He is the president of our country and Im a proud American who wants to see The USA healthy. Good sir, think deeply and learn to love
"We must prove to martin luther We stand for what is right No court, or left-wing liberals Can ever make him white Form a solid line of white men Conservatives we'll be They'll never ever overcome Our schools will still be free No we don't want niggers in our schools We're not for immigration Keep those niggers in their place We'll have a better nation" Johnny Rebel
Sowell's stance is informed within a libetarian positivist science (J. Stiegler ws his teacher). But his empiricism is, as it were, 'too factual'. Intuitve reasoning shld not be ruled out: in the abscence of A.Action the student cld hv still concluded tht blacks were 'slaves', 'African'- and Mr Tom. Sowell-ws connected to these terms & thus ws not capable of writing or thinking. To rule out other factors is to rule in one: tht whites wld hv viwed black success diffrent without A.A.

The Hoover institute is a partisan think tank. Its very difficult for truly great minds to thrive inside of any partisan group like that. Good people but limited in their prospective. Dr Sowell is unfortunately just another talking head. With great delivery! Dont confuse good delivery with substance.
@Chaz770 good delivery with no substance is Obama. Sowell is the anti-obama. He should be held up in the black community for his achievements in place of race baiters/hustlers like Jesse Jackson who just wants to get other blacks fired up rather than solve issues so he can keep fleecing them as their "leader".
In regards to affirmative action (AA), the older I get the more I see life as imperfect. Is AA the cure all solution to a long and in many ways systemic problem in our beautiful country? No, however it is one way to address the destructive behavior that was caused by God less men. Do you have a better way? Respectfully speaking. Note: power is not measured in numbers its economics! Look at South Africa.
Yes Chaz this country has a history of inequity that AA is intended to remedy. Unfortunately no one remedy will cure all that needs cured and at times the cure is worse than the sickness. The problem with positions of authority such as elected leaders, appointed officials and so on is this, if good men dont take those jobs bad men surely will. I question how many want TRUE equallity and how many want to punish those they believe owe a debt?
After doing some math, 15% black American population divided by a black man elected president multiplied by progressive white votes = no need for affirmitive action. No sarcasm intended just basic math here.
I feel sorry for blacks who have worked hard to gain position in America on thier own merit. I wonder how often they want to tell others they didnt get there by way of affirmative action? I wonder how many would believe them? Affirmative action has ruined any respect they should have recieved. Sad.....just sad.
They feel the same way that white men feel who have been getting opportunities while being underprepared, or unqualified for hundreds of years. Happy they have a job. Your view on this subject is lacking a historical reality, and full of cultural arrogance. People within the majority culture make too many assumptions that somehow in their minds become indisputable facts. feel sorry for yourself
Chaz your reply was very thought provoking and well spoken. I would like to ask you how you feel about the subject of affirmitive action. Do you think it is fair to either race? I have seen many good men "passed over" because they were not in the "buddy system". Do you think creating another "buddy system" will solve the problem, or are we all to remain subjects of human nature? Man has yet to solve one problem without creating two more.
It's amazing to me how "tolerant" liberals claim to be, but when a person present an opposing point of view, he/she is an Uncle Tom, sellout, etc. That is so childish. If you disagree w/ Mr Sowell, tell me how the policies he advocates are erroneous. I get the feeling any liberal would have a hard time doing that successfully.
Sowell is an Uncle Tom because he criticizes black people who are good to him while praising racists whites who think he's not even an American (like Pat Buchanan). That's the very definition of an Uncle Tom. Just like Shelby Steele, Clarence Thomas, Michael Steele, Larry Elder . . .
Okay. So if you think they are racist, then they are racist. And if you think they are racist, then they can not do anything that is worth praise.
In other words, you disagree with the person you CLAIM is racist, so anyone who considers their ideas, which aren't related to your claims, must be praising a racist rather than a thinker or the ideas involved.
Let me ask you a question. Do you think it's racist to describe white Americans as "Americans" (single word) and black Americans as "Africans" (single word)? Answer this question please.
There's more context than you are giving, so I'm not going to answer that. Send me the interview and I'll watch it or the article and I'll read it, if it's not too long.
Here's the scenario: the United States's current population is about 66% white and about 13% black. If someone looks at these numbers and says, "Okay, that means 66% of the population is American and 13% is African," would he be making a racist statement?
I've given you the context, and I'm not ignoring your point, I'm addressing it. Is the speaker making a racist comment?
That isn't enough context. Either send a video or transcript.
But even under the lousy context you provided, it isn't racist.
And you aren't addressing my point. I can see a pattern already my left wing friend. You aren't making any points and you think any thought given to something is squirming.
I'm done talking to you; you won't ever make any points so it's a waste of time.
Of course, there's enough context. Any American who thinks only white people can be "American" and no other race is plainly, utterly racist. Yet you said it's NOT racist. Why is that? You give no explanation, only a lot of huffing and puffing. Pathetic. You're like all rightwingers--a bunch of thrown bullshit, but chickens out like a little bitch when called to back up your claims. So run on home, you little bitch, run on home. Hahaha.
Bullshit. The context is there, and the question is complete. Republicans just won't answer it cuz it'll show how incredibly stupid black Republicans like Thomas Sowell are--and how racist a lot of white Republicans are.
Jujuman I wasnt speaking in ref to your question, but if you truly want to be more effective, clean up your vocabulary and relax a bit. I understand your points but the hate and venom wont help your cause.
Steele and Elder are mere opportunist, why people follow them? They dont follow them but it makes them feel good about their position.
He does not do this. he is a libertarian. he has lambasted the redneck mentality. he wants blacks to make it on their own in a free market, which is something we have not had much of to the contrary of popular belief. I really do not see how he is a Uncle Tom. an uncle Tom is someone who kisses the white man's ass through obedience and dependency. He seeks independency and the separation of state and race.
No, he's an Uncle Tom cuz he (as I've mentioned earlier) kisses the asses of racist white Republicans. He's like a blacker version of Victor Davis Hanson--two supposed scholars who are both nothing more than rightwing hacks. Hanson at least is white and therefore isn't seen as being a chimp by other Republicans. What is Sowell's excuse? None. Therefore: Uncle Tom, like Shelby Steele, Larry Elder, Michael Steele . . .
So, you think he's an uncle tom because he's black and conservative, but it would be okay for him to be conservative if he was white? That sounds pretty racist to me.
You really think republicans see him as a chimp? Why do you think republicans are racist anyway?
@midnightseoul Are you dumb or something? Why don't you read any of Pat Buchanan's woe-are-we-white-folks books? How about his Death of the West? In that very book, he calls white Americans "Americans" and black Americans "Africans," and how the "American" population is overtaken by non-Americans like "Africans." Is that proof enough for you? Douche.
@Jujuman2003 Perhaps it's been a while since you read the book, so I invite you to visit its page on Google Books and use the search terms "African" and "Africans". Not once does he refer to black Americans as Africans. Your comment about population growth also seems to be a mix-up: he does mention that some projections indicate that Africans will outnumber Europeans by 2050, but black and white birth rates within America, iirc, are very similar, and not discussed in this particular text.
So no, that's not enough proof for me that Buchanan thinks black Americans are not in fact Americans. If he held that loopy view, he would not have chosen a black woman as his running mate in 2000.
I'm a black man and I know in principle that affirmative action is wrong, but one can't disregard the fact that when left to their own whims white men in American openly practiced discrimination in hiring, pay, and promotion. A sixty+ old friend of mine told me that a white manager told him that a black man doesn't need to make as much money as a white man in the same position.
It's not "liberty" that defines Republican policies these days but rabid racism, ignorance, and religious fundamentalism. It's sad that silly self-hating Uncle Thomas Sowell can't see that. To most white Republicans, he's just a black ape with a fancy vocabulary.
I'm a white Repubican, and I've respected, read and followed Thomas Sowell for years. It's easy for you to call him an Uncle Tom, but what have you done except name call? He, from what I've consistently read, does not believe blacks need the "leg up" of affirmative action if they work hard and apply themselves; that AA is an artificial creation - which it is. Why should color, and not merit, be the determiner of job position? It's further declaration of inferiority & should be insulting.
I agree with some of your points. As a black person, I feel that affirmative action attaches a stigma to minorities. The stigma that minorities and women can't get ahead unless for special treatment. AA perpetuates that blacks and minorities will always be dependant and needy. Affirmative action should be based on needs based not race or gender based. If it is needs based, then everyone benefits.
Except the people who have to pay in and get nothing out. And it's usually the people who get the least that pay the most. Add to this that they have to pay under threat of fine or imprisonment, then you have what I consider an immoral system. If it were voluntary, it'd be a different story.
AA also means fewer qualified people and increased cost of operation, which is what really makes the poor poorer. It also hurts most of the people it claims to help. I can explain that if you want.
@arslp It's funny how black people call people uncle tom in a derogatory way. Funny how you don't see a whole lot of uncle toms killed in gang shootings, addicted to crack, and poverty stricken for their whole lives. Don't you think its just a slight coincidence that most successful black people just happen to speak correct English...
Good observations. Mr. Sowell sets a high bar indeed, and it's easier to attack him than attempt the hurdle themselves. Mr. Sowell is a presence in society, not just an artificially derived climate (affirmative action), so he's a target for those who've done nothing. He is the anti-entitlement mentality of Obama, Jackson, and the politicians who have already destroyed the structure of the family by erasing the presence of a male parent and fostering any type of accountability/work
Affirmative Action actively harms black people because it incites racism from other ethnic groups when some are raised above their ability by Affirmative Action and it distracts capital from being invested where it makes maximum yield: investing in undervalued labour that is cheap but could offer more such as the alleged class of skilled black people who are undervalued. They will remain so BECAUSE of trade unions & affirmative action absorbing capital to replace forcedly OVERvalued wage labour.
Thanks! Never forget that when income is forcibly divorced from labour by forcing high wages and removing the capital lender's discretion to fire those who do not pull their weight for the firm, he is forced to overcompensate by their unproductivity by a less than optimal investment of capital to supplement their crappy skills that he has to pay for at the expense of buying wage labour that is more productive than its cost. Like McDonalds investing capital in lieue of labour due 2 minimum wages.
@arslp That's right his views are historical self evident.. it was when the progressives started is when things got dicey and bad for blacks.. how else could it be that the 1st female millionaire, was a black woman born of a share cropper? see Madam C.J. Walker.. liberals are the real racist who have sought to destroy the black community
Excellent point!! If physical attributes are substituted as a replacement for merit and a strong work eithic, how is that substitution any different or less reprehensible than the idea it was supposedly created to fight? The victim mentality, learned helplessness, pocket-full-of-excuses, and sense of entitlement have enslaved more people than any plantation owner has ever done.
And how long do you hold on to that? No one has ever paid my rent, given me money for groceries, paid my utilities, or paid my tuition. Look at the projects - people respect what they have earned and paid for; the projects - meant to be transitional living; have become ancestoral homes. So many people have drug themselves up from poverty, gone to school, gotten jobs, etc. How long do you excuse the lack of even trying to do better for yourself PARTICULARLY with all the incentives
if you are a thirty year old your parents probably grew up during the civil rights movement and have recollection of Jim Crow, we aren't talking about all that long ago.
Am much older than that; & yes, ancestoral homes. What do you call 3rd & 4th generations of people who've never lived elsewhere, or had a job? So how did that help? It didn't; and these people DO NOT respect any thing as it cost them absolutely nothing. That for which we work, deriving satisfaction and self-worth, is that of which we can proud. How do people who've been given everything (housing, food, utilities, medical care) have any pride or respect? They don't, but gripe mor
Yes, but my point is that the cycle of dependence predates Lib programs. Slavery and racial discrimination create dependence because they don't allow free independent action. You can't take initiative if there is an oppressive majority telling you when and how you can act. Generations of this create a mentality in many that is not disposed to taking initiative.
i would agree with you however that the answer at this point is more Booker T Washington rather than W.E.B Dubois
@arslp The problem with your argument is that it is entirely logical, and therefore bound to fail in persuading those on the Left. Perhaps if you were a bit more hysterical...
I'm not "most" white Republicans, but I am one; and I wholeheartedly admire this man. He is a brilliant writer, with no fingers pointed at anyone. He appears exceptionally thoughtful and reasonable. I know others who feel similarly about him. I find it far more sad that you refer to him as "Uncle Thomas" rather than as an accomplished and acknowledged writer. Do you always just slip into name calling for those with whom you disagree rather than even listening to what they say?

Uncle Tom Sowell is full of lies. ALL of his research suppresses vast amounts of evidence to reach conclusions that justify oppression. Sowell kissed rich, white asses to get where he is today (rich brown asses too).
His hyperindividualism and moneytheist world views are absurd at best. He falsely assumes that everyone in America (brown especially) can just "pull themselves up by the bootstraps". Sorry to tell you, but the "American Pie" isn't big enough for everyone to be successful.
Is it true that a black male has a better chance of going to prison than he does of going to college? Yes.
How much $ did Richard J. Daley's cronies make from building substandard housing projects?
Read the comments below mine. And don't go whining that there is a liberal majority that oppresses people. That is one of the biggest bullshit lies created by people like Lee Atwater and Karl Rove. You should look them up. They've influenced you.
If that's not the "pot calling the kettle black, I don't know what is." I'm attacking Democrats so don't get it into your simple, little mind that I am somehow on the "left". "Left" and "Right" aren't anything like what your pals and the mainstream media tell you they are.
The Uncle Tom's are the one's that helped enslave Black's AGAIN to welfare and to the system, the one's who tell them they can't achieve and must remain on a government plantation.
Sowell's goal is to set Blacks free and you Uncle Tom's have been resisting him the whole way..
Why so they can be put into prisons? All the good jobs went overseas or were outsourced to the South. Prisons or welfare, hmmm which one costs society more? How about outsourcing?
What makes you think there is opportunities for the black, urban poor to improve their lot in life? Statistics show, more black men end up in prison than in college.
How much has the prison population sky rocketed since "welfare reform" and the United States transformed from an industrial based society to that of a service sector based economy?
How many prisons were built to house the urban poor when most good, industrial jobs went overseas to sweatshops in places like Communist China?
How much does the largest capitalist nation in history, the US, owe the largest communist nation in history, Communist China? Largest deficit in history. Slavery?
You are ignoring the fact that "Communist" China's great wealth has come from entrepreneurs, and capitalism. I also think you are skipping over the war on drugs which is really a war on "superfluous population", and creates jobs, in terms of construction, and employees of prisons.
There are not many chances for the urban poor, but, there have been many success stories that have come from individuals that decided to do something else but turn to welfare or crime. It is up to the individual.
And you are ingnoring the fact that much of China's economy is run by the state sector. And also that all those wonderful "entrepreneurs" really messed up Russia when the economy collapsed.
As for the people in prisons, they became what you call a ""superfluous population" because their jobs went overseas to sweatshop labor in Latin America and South East Asia. Dropping tariffs and gov. protectionism of corporations ensured that US goods could no longer compete with overseas imports.
Not true, the state doesn't own all the factoreis where walmart's vendors make all of their products. Entrepreneurism is alive and well in China, no one wants to invest in industries where the state might nationalize, and you loose all of your investment, that hasn't happened in China. China's central planniing does cover moneytary policy, etc., but that's not too different from our Federal Reserve, or any other American state control of fre enterprise.
As for your comment, "There are not many chances for the urban poor, but, there have been many success stories that have come from individuals that decided to do something else but turn to welfare or crime. It is up to the individual."
That's laden with unrealistic ideologies. For one, it assumes that there is unlimited wealth and "room at the top" for everyone. Two, it assumes that everyone is born with the same "life chances" (opportunities) to succeed. Consumer capitalism needs its "losers".
Again, not true, it is up to the individual what they will make of themselves, and there is not a finite amount of wealth to go around. Just because someone makes money it doesn't mean that they are taking it out of the mouth of someone else. Not everyone will be Bill Gates, but if you've been on welfare your whole life, that's your fault.
I don't read one book, and draw the same conclusions. I read many books, look at both sides, and come to my own conclusions, thanks. I've not read that particular book, but the title suggests a history into Edward Bernays, and how propaganda became PR. Don't know...
I was in El Paso, TX, a West Texas border town, so no, didn't come from money.
If there's only so much pie, how is wealth generated? There is obviously a lot more of it than in the 1950s, where did it come from?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yes, I am. The wealthy are the ones who moved their businesses overseas to third-world countries with sweatshop labor. The wealthy also sent their lobbyists to Congress so that import tariffs would be lowered on the imported goods that came from these countries. DoJohn McCain, Bush, and other wealthy pigs who don't really provide all that many services really need 8 houses and beaucoup land and cars?
No they don't deserve it either. Them pigs can learn how to share. Like in kindergarten.
I know an independent film maker who will be realeasing a movie highlighting how in comparison to the rest of the world, few countries offer the benefits to the poor as the U.S does and yet immigrants from Haiti and Nigeria, far poorer countries, have a higher percentage of college graduates than African Americans within our own country. I'm not saying things are not fair but isn't the victim mentality detrimental?
If the majority of minorities that enter college have parents who were born in far worse countries than surely we have to admit something is intellectually wrong with the mindset the poor are being forced to embrace. Sowell does point out that under slavery and 1960's segregation the black family was still one unit, teen pregnancy did not exist, and welfare was of no invention. After the 1980's and the introduction of crack we have seen a "revolution" but how can we suggest its monetary?
Maybe the US treats their homeless better than the government of Brazil treats their homeless. Maybe they send the "best" and "brightest" over from Haiti and Nigeria.
Google the "prison industrial complex". fortunes have been built on the suffering of others. The US has more people in prison than even China does. Most in the world. Raw and relative frequencies. Two million. Yes, sometimes capitalism is slavery.
in comparison to the rest of the world, few countries offer the benefits to the poor as the U.S does and yet immigrants from Haiti and Nigeria, far poorer countries, have a higher percentage of college graduates than African Americans within our own country. - - - - - - - Voluntarily immigrating to America is a much less harrowing than African Americans had it. The victim mentality is a new thing. It wasn't so long ago that African Americans weren't allowed to go to a decent middle school
Nobody ever said that the middle passage was not tough. My point is that people with less oppurtunities come here and do better and I believe the victim mentality is the cause. Racism in the U.S applies to African and Carribean immigrants as well but statistically they do far better than African Americans.
@KhanSlayer absolutely, in most of my biology classes at the University, or during my interviews at medical schools. The majority of blacks in those settings(about 70 to 90 %) where immigrants either from West Africa or from the islands. The American system for blacks is meant to keep them exactly where they are...even though liberals make it seem as if they are helping out.
@KhanSlayer I am of Nigerian descent both of my parents are Nigerian and have Master's degrees. Most of the people who come to America are on the top of the food chain. They have money to begin with so they have a totally different socioeconomic standing than African-Americans. You are not going to see as many poor Nigerians here who are uneducated. The uneducated and poor ones are in Nigeria.
@GozzyWozzy I disagree. My father did not graduate from high school and is Nigerian. I am currently in Electrical Engineering. One of my best friends was dirt poor in Lagos and is too an electrical engineer. There are plenty of people who come from Nigeria with little money and make the best of it in the U.S. My uncle came from Ghana and died poor working at seven Eleven in the United States and never subscribed to the victim mentality. The victim mentality is foreign to Nigerians entirely.
The liberals give them just enough welfare $, and the conservatives lock up just enough of them, to keep them from rioting in the slums and projects. If the liberals didn't give them welfare, there's a good chance they would organize themselves and launch some class warfare.
Look at the Civil Rights Movement in the late 60s. Places like Newark, Watts, Chicago, and Detroit are examples that class/race warfare may be inevitable in the unjust laissez-faire capitalism middle class folk propagate.
You're full of shit. Did you ever hear of "Red Lining"? Or how about "panic peddlers"? What about "public aid penitentiaries"?
You don't have the emotional maturity to think outside of what the corporate media has fed you. Otherwise, you would see that business oppresses people far more than government ever has. In fact, government, when utilized by the people, can liberate those people from the oppression of big business.
Then again, I don't you're emotionally capable of handling this.
Yeah O.k. we have all heard of the famous Walmart massacre of 50 million of it's own shoppers. What you are talking about is liberating the people from THEMSELVES. Why are you under the delusion that political self interest is superior to private self interest? Or have you, as Jefferson put it, found angels in the form of men to govern us?
Government power is backed by law and force unlike corporate power.
Your words mentally enslave those you claim to care about.
The advertising and marketing agencies of corps like Wal-Mart are made up of highly specialized technocrats, such as sociologists and psychologists, who manufacture deceitful public relations called "commercials".
According to Mike Huckabee, there are now 70 corporate lobbyists per Congressman in Washington DC. They bribed out and bought big gov. long ago and constantly get special favors like gov. contracts (Haliburton) and subsidies.
Go on believing the delusion that gov. and business don't get along.
"Government power is backed by law and force unlike corporate power."
They're both the same thing. My local Wal-Mart got a grant of 4 million to build their store. They don't pay their workers health insurance so they have to get the ACCESS Card, so taxpayers like me can pick up Wal-Mart's slack.
The courts always back up corporations. And they've used force when necessary to protect corporate privileges around the globe.
intellectuals espouse neoconservative views about racial equality and the problems
of the black poor, most white Americans will hesitate to characterize
these views as racially Insensitive.""
I've lived in quite a few places where, if Sowell and neocons were to spend time there, they would change their belief that the US is NOT a racist (or classist) country.
"I've lived in quite a few places where, if Sowell and neocons were to spend time there, they would change their belief that the US is NOT a racist (or classist) country."
Think of the whole country as an apple barrel. Think of the pockets of racist fools that still congregate in that barrel. Think of them as rotten apples. Now, please forgive me, but think of your self as a propagator of that bad apple to spoil the rest. Please! Stop black vrs. white perception! it is nonsense! truth.
Those liberal sitcoms you grew up watching prepared you for that mindset. Theodore Huxtable, Webster, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air are fantasies. There's much more to those "bad apples" that you call racists. I'm not sitting all that far from some black housing projects and a run down, mostly white trailer park. And all in the middle of the "Rust Belt". Limited employment, money, housing, food, drugs, hell you name it. Factories closed down. Abandoned neighborhoods. There's not much left.
Then again, all those poor whites and blacks from the Rust Belt may not end up in prison like they have been lately. They just might rise up and move west to places like California and Australia.
Where Pearly white people with middle-class biases like you would be threatened. Just imagine, you may have to give up some of the wonderful privileges you have enjoyed your whole life.
I lived in Rogers Park in Chicago for years (near Howard street) A strange thing happened to this white boy. I soon found that the only black who would talk to me, or even respond to my saying hello, for example, were Christians. It got to the point that I could pick out a Christian the moment someone looked at me. I concluded that it was because they were seeing beyond color, and just saw me as a 'child of God' etc. This was my point. Let's all stop focusing on color, but on character.
When Richard Daley was building the loop to segregate Bridgeport from the rest of Chicago.
I wish that everyone in them "public aid penitentiaries" had jobs waiting for them when they got out of there. I wish there was no drugs for them and blacks didn't have to pay higher rent than whites.
It would be nice. Sowell never pays attention to that stuff. How poor, black people were not allowed access to markets for food, clothing, and shelter. Look up "PANIC PEDDLERS" This is a serious issue.
Every individual born into the USA should have the opportunity, regardless of race, religion, creed, etc., to live in a manner that contributes to the public good. This is why we have games and sports for our children (if I had any). The children then need to grow into adults that work as a team to make a better society. It doesn't matter if they're black, white, or green. We need to play and work fair with each other as human beings. I know that sounds corny. The "Child of God" thing is nice!
"black people.....not allowed access to markets for food"
It may have *felt* like that, but this subjective view doesn't coincide with
objective reality. (Rosa Parks knew this) I really think a lot of suffering has to do with people being their own worst enemies. There are countless successful blacks in Chicago. People who have made their own way by not obsessing about race.
More rent? When rogers Park started to gentrify (i.e. more whites moved in) my rent went up and up and up.
Yes, dude, literally. Find the books "American Pharaoh" or "When Work Disappears". Or pick up Mike Royko's "Boss" for a look at how the Cook County Democratic Political Machine was used by Daley. Sure, there's successful blacks in Chitown. Even on the Gold Coast my friend. However, it's the most racially segregated city in the country. Most blacks lived in slums with rats post WWII. Then they built "Public Aid Penitentiaries" or what some call "filing cabinets for the poor".
I'd like to hear Uncle Tom Sowell here talk about public housing projects in Chicago. I'd like to see Sowell tell the people in the projects that the reason they're living in the projects instead of the Gold Coast or sunny California is because they didn't work hard enough. As if there is a direct path from the assembly line to the boardroom.
The reason they're living in the Chicago projects and not in sunny California, you illiterate shmuck, is that housing regulation restricting building drives up the cost of land so much that only the very wealthy can afford to buy homes there. It's interventions into the market for housing that create the housing shortage, and that force many middle and lower income people to live in housing projects. Thomas Sowell is an "Uncle Tom"? You're an ignorant putz.
Where did you read that you "shmuck"? I'm well read up on urban sociology and urban history . Take, for example, the Democratic Political Machine of Richard J. Daley in the Chicago of the 1960s.
This Democrat mayor and his cronies set up special conditions with building contractors, architects, political alliances, Real Estate Lobbyists etc. to build substandard housing projects. They pocketed a lot of $. Daley was in good w/ the Kennedys who got tons of federal $.
I can refer you to a ton of newspaper and magazine articles, and first hand testimony, of people who worked in the Cook County Democratic political machine.
Real estate agencies and building contractors made tons of money off of white peoples' fears of poor blacks. As the blacks moved into the cities, the "panic peddler" from the real estate agency would be sent into white peoples' homes to warn them blacks were coming. They'd then sell their houses for cheap and move to the suburbs.

"You are a turd. Enough said. What, wonderful traditions like slavery and segregation right? Or how about a violent labor history. Or how about a country where workers leave their constitutional rights at the front door when they walk into their places of work. Screw you, you're a brainwashed, white-backlash idiot."
Yea, isn't that a great comment? Sorry about the turd part. I am right about the white backlash part. It needs a long vacation. Freedom is not possible with it around. Poor white and black unite. We need blood. The blood of the rich. The blood of people who have worked so little and have so much. I've worked like crazy and have next to nothing. Then again, as I am working myself thru school, I should have some good $ someday. I will continue to fight for justice.

Do me a favor-use your brain. If you've got one. You, and Sowell, believe everything that the establishment wants you to believe. Rich, white people love Sowell. Go watch some Manning Marable and then get back to me.
I keep seeing that same *EXACT* message from you on multiple Sowell vids. But it's ME who needs to use their brain? One of the great ironies of life is that people most often accuse others of what they themselves are most guilty.
Yeah, do you know why I do that? To piss off people like you. Did you look up Manning Marable like I asked you to? No, because you'll just listen to classist people like Sowell. You never hear stories about people who are saved from starvation by welfare. Or how jobs have moved out of the industrial, northeastern sector of the nation. And therefore there are no jobs. Or how if unemployment goes outside the range of 4-6% the economy is f*cked. No, Sowell surpresses a massive amount of evidence.
NBB is one of those peoples who exist to ammuse us here at YouTube; what the NBB types do is listen to Talk Radio from William Bennett thru Michael Savage (oh my god and oh my jesus), memorize something and repeat it the next day, right here on the GOAT forum, YouTube. You people shouldn't oughtta do that.
Impetago of the Brains, what in the devil is wrong with you? I think you need to fast to help get the sludge out of your digestive tract that is poisoning your noodle & over-fertilizing your rhetoric with non-biodegradable toxins.
You see, NBB is amusing us again. Look how seriously he takes himself. Listen to Thomas Sowell-every sentence is a pseudo-godly pronouncment. Listen to the callers on Talk Radio. "Oh, Rush, I hate these socialists so much, Rush."
It's the ubiquitous, endless whining: "Oh my god, Obama is gonna steal all my money just like Bill Clinton did." But, these sissies are still eating designer potatoe puffs and cheesecakes, driving to their "upscale" shops
"Yessa massa, that's a right. My people's is lazy and shiftless so's yous shouldn't gives them moneys." "That's right Tom You're a good boy. You're not like them. Dance for us Tom. Shuffle your feet and sing the blues." "Shoo massa I's loves bein a house nigg*r. Eyes a good boy."
You're alright man. Yeah, and it's like we have socialism for the rich and capitalism for the poor. None of those fellas (Rush) mentions that corporate welfare is 3 times that as welfare for the poor. We just fondly refer to it as subsidies. Rush and Billo bitch about the rich being taxed when they're corps. are rollin in dough. Rush is just an armchair toughguy. He calls it like he sees it- from his mansion in Florida. Orwell is rolling in his grave right now.
The problem with this clip is that it is not long enough. You get nothing of substance here from Thomas Sowell, to speak of. If you just happened upon this and you don't know who this man is, please at least put in the effort to read a few of his columns on-line; better yet, try reading one of his (numerous) books. I think you will get a far better grasp of his towering intellect and compelling points of view.

Chaz770 2 years ago
Yes Chaz this country has a history of inequity that AA is intended to remedy. Unfortunately no one remedy will cure all that needs cured and at times the cure is worse than the sickness. The problem with positions of authority such as elected leaders, appointed officials and so on is this, if good men dont take those jobs bad men surely will. I question how many want TRUE equallity and how many want to punish those they believe owe a debt?
happyguy2300 2 years ago
After doing some math, 15% black American population divided by a black man elected president multiplied by progressive white votes = no need for affirmitive action. No sarcasm intended just basic math here.

I feel sorry for blacks who have worked hard to gain position in America on thier own merit. I wonder how often they want to tell others they didnt get there by way of affirmative action? happyguy2300 2 years ago
They feel the same way that white men feel who have been getting opportunities while being underprepared, or unqualified for hundreds of years. Happy they have a job. Chaz770 2 years ago
Chaz your reply was very thought provoking and well spoken. I would like to ask you how you feel about the subject of affirmitive action. Do you think it is fair to either race? chiohkeh 2 years ago
Sowell is an Uncle Tom because he criticizes black people who are good to him while praising racists whites who think he's not even an American (like Pat Buchanan). That's the very definition of an Uncle Tom. Just like Shelby Steele, Clarence Thomas, Michael Steele, Larry Elder . . .
Jujuman2003 2 years ago
In other words, you don't like his beliefs, so he's an Uncle Tom.
JohnBreadForger 2 years ago
No, you need to reread my comment. I think he's an Uncle Tom because he kisses racist white people's asses.
Jujuman2003 2 years ago
JohnBreadForger 2 years ago
Let me ask you a question. Do you think it's racist to describe white Americans as "Americans" (single word) and black Americans as "Africans" (single word)? Answer this question please.
Jujuman2003 2 years ago
There's more context than you are giving, so I'm not going to answer that. Send me the interview and I'll watch it or the article and I'll read it, if it's not too long.
But you're ignoring my point.
JohnBreadForger 2 years ago
You're squirming, my rightwing friend.
Answer the question.
Answer the question.
Answer the question.
Jujuman2003 2 years ago
That isn't enough context. Either send a video or transcript.
But even under the lousy context you provided, it isn't racist.
And you aren't addressing my point. I can see a pattern already my left wing friend. You aren't making any points and you think any thought given to something is squirming.
I'm done talking to you; you won't ever make any points so it's a waste of time.
JohnBreadForger 2 years ago
Of course, there's enough context. Any American who thinks only white people can be "American" and no other race is plainly, utterly racist. Yet you said it's NOT racist. Why is that? You give no explanation, only a lot of huffing and puffing. Pathetic. You're like all rightwingers--a bunch of thrown bullshit, but chickens out like a little bitch when called to back up your claims. So run on home, you little bitch, run on home. Hahaha.
Jujuman2003 2 years ago
Its an incomplete question. It lacks context or a relative frame work by which to gauge. Whats your point?
Chaz770 2 years ago
Bullshit. The context is there, and the question is complete. Republicans just won't answer it cuz it'll show how incredibly stupid black Republicans like Thomas Sowell are--and how racist a lot of white Republicans are.
Jujuman2003 2 years ago
Jujuman I wasnt speaking in ref to your question, but if you truly want to be more effective, clean up your vocabulary and relax a bit. I understand your points but the hate and venom wont help your cause.
Steele and Elder are mere opportunist, why people follow them? They dont follow them but it makes them feel good about their position.

He does not do this. he is a libertarian. he has lambasted the redneck mentality. he wants blacks to make it on their own in a free market, which is something we have not had much of to the contrary of popular belief. midnightseoul 1 year ago
Douche.
Jujuman2003 1 year ago
@Jujuman2003 Perhaps it's been a while since you read the book, so I invite you to visit its page on Google Books and use the search terms "African" and "Africans". Not once does he refer to black Americans as Africans. Your comment about population growth also seems to be a mix-up: he does mention that some projections indicate that Africans will outnumber Europeans by 2050, but black and white birth rates within America, iirc, are very similar, and not discussed in this particular text.
midnightseoul 1 year ago
So no, that's not enough proof for me that Buchanan thinks black Americans are not in fact Americans. If he held that loopy view, he would not have chosen a black woman as his running mate in 2000.

I'm a black man and I know in principle that affirmative action is wrong, but one can't disregard the fact that when left to their own whims white men in American openly practiced discrimination in hiring, pay, and promotion. It's not "liberty" that defines Republican policies these days but rabid racism, ignorance, and religious fundamentalism. It's sad that silly self-hating Uncle Thomas Sowell can't see that. To most white Republicans, he's just a black ape with a fancy vocabulary.
Jujuman2003 2 years ago
I'm a white Repubican, and I've respected, read and followed Thomas Sowell for years. It's easy for you to call him an Uncle Tom, but what have you done except name call? He, from what I've consistently read, does not believe blacks need the "leg up" of affirmative action if they work hard and apply themselves; that AA is an artificial creation - which it is. Why should color, and not merit, be the determiner of job position? It's further declaration of inferiority & should be insulting.
arslp 2 years ago 62
I agree with some of your points. As a black person, I feel that affirmative action attaches a stigma to minorities. The stigma that minorities and women can't get ahead unless for special treatment. AA perpetuates that blacks and minorities will always be dependant and needy. Affirmative action should be based on needs based not race or gender based. If it is needs based, then everyone benefits.
luvs2teach00 2 years ago
Except the people who have to pay in and get nothing out. And it's usually the people who get the least that pay the most. Add to this that they have to pay under threat of fine or imprisonment, then you have what I consider an immoral system. If it were voluntary, it'd be a different story.
AA also means fewer qualified people and increased cost of operation, which is what really makes the poor poorer. It also hurts most of the people it claims to help. I can explain that if you want.
JohnBreadForger 2 years ago

The Uncle Tom's are the one's that helped enslave Black's AGAIN to welfare and to the system, the one's who tell them they can't achieve and must remain on a government plantation.
Sowell's goal is to set Blacks free and you Uncle Tom's have been resisting him the whole way..
There is no freedom but individual achievement .

Why so they can be put into prisons? All the good jobs went overseas or were outsourced to the South. Prisons or welfare, hmmm which one costs society more? How about outsourcing?
What makes you think there is opportunities for the black, urban poor to improve their lot in life? Statistics show, more black men end up in prison than in college.
knucklesandwichanarc 2 years ago
How much has the prison population sky rocketed since "welfare reform" and the United States transformed from an industrial based society to that of a service sector based economy?
How many prisons were built to house the urban poor when most good, industrial jobs went overseas to sweatshops in places like Communist China?
How much does the largest capitalist nation in history, the US, owe the largest communist nation in history, Communist China? Largest deficit in history. Slavery?

All in the name of cheap sneakers, toys, and underwear at your local Wal-Mart.

knucklesandwichanarc 2 years ago
You are ignoring the fact that "Communist" China's great wealth has come from entrepreneurs, and capitalism. I also think you are skipping over the war on drugs which is really a war on "superfluous population", and creates jobs, in terms of construction, and employees of prisons.
There are not many chances for the urban poor, but, there have been many success stories that have come from individuals that decided to do something else but turn to welfare or crime. It is up to the individual.
vatoencabronado 2 years ago
And you are ingnoring the fact that much of China's economy is run by the state sector. And also that all those wonderful "entrepreneurs" really messed up Russia when the economy collapsed.
As for the people in prisons, they became what you call a ""superfluous population" because their jobs went overseas to sweatshop labor in Latin America and South East Asia. Dropping tariffs and gov. protectionism of corporations ensured that US goods could no longer compete with overseas imports.
knucklesandwichanarc 2 years ago
Not true, the state doesn't own all the factoreis where walmart's vendors make all of their products. Entrepreneurism is alive and well in China, no one wants to invest in industries where the state might nationalize, and you loose all of your investment, that hasn't happened in China. China's central planniing does cover moneytary policy, etc., but that's not too different from our Federal Reserve, or any other American state control of fre enterprise.
vatoencabronado 2 years ago
As for your comment, "There are not many chances for the urban poor, but, there have been many success stories that have come from individuals that decided to do something else but turn to welfare or crime. It is up to the individual."
That's laden with unrealistic ideologies. For one, it assumes that there is unlimited wealth and "room at the top" for everyone. Two, it assumes that everyone is born with the same "life chances" (opportunities) to succeed. Consumer capitalism needs its "losers".
knucklesandwichanarc 2 years ago
Again, not true, it is up to the individual what they will make of themselves, and there is not a finite amount of wealth to go around. Just because someone makes money it doesn't mean that they are taking it out of the mouth of someone else. Not everyone will be Bill Gates, but if you've been on welfare your whole life, that's your fault.
vatoencabronado 2 years ago
You wrote, "...and there is not a finite amount of wealth to go around." Does this mean that there is an "unlimited" amount of natural resources?
You should read the book "Fables of Abundance: A Cultural History of Advertising" by Jackson Lears.
"Just because someone makes money it doesn't mean that they are taking it out of the mouth of someone else."
Another myth. There's only so much of the pie to go around buddy boy. Were you spoiled as a child? Did you come from a home with $? No offens
knucklesandwichanarc 2 years ago
I don't read one book, and draw the same conclusions. I read many books, look at both sides, and come to my own conclusions, thanks. I've not read that particular book, but the title suggests a history into Edward Bernays, and how propaganda became PR. Don't know...
I was in El Paso, TX, a West Texas border town, so no, didn't come from money.
If there's only so much pie, how is wealth generated? There is obviously a lot more of it than in the 1950s, where did it come from?
vatoencabronado 2 years ago
Also, not all wealth comes from natural resources, information is where most of it is generated today.

KhanSlayer 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show

KhanSlayer 2 years ago 19
If the majority of minorities that enter college have parents who were born in far worse countries than surely we have to admit something is intellectually wrong with the mindset the poor are being forced to embrace. Sowell does point out that under slavery and 1960's segregation the black family was still one unit, teen pregnancy did not exist, and welfare was of no invention. After the 1980's and the introduction of crack we have seen a "revolution" but how can we suggest its monetary?
KhanSlayer 2 years ago
Maybe the US treats their homeless better than the government of Brazil treats their homeless. Maybe they send the "best" and "brightest" over from Haiti and Nigeria.
Google the "prison industrial complex". fortunes have been built on the suffering of others. The US has more people in prison than even China does. Most in the world. Raw and relative frequencies. Two million. Yes, sometimes capitalism is slavery.

The victim mentality is a new thing. It wasn't so long ago that African Americans weren't allowed to go to a decent middle school
philnoll 2 years ago
Nobody ever said that the middle passage was not tough. My point is that people with less oppurtunities come here and do better and I believe the victim mentality is the cause. Racism in the U.S applies to African and Carribean immigrants as well but statistically they do far better than African Americans.

GozzyWozzy 11 months ago

Then again, I don't you're emotionally capable of handling this.
knucklesandwichanarc 2 years ago
Yeah O.k. we have all heard of the famous Walmart massacre of 50 million of it's own shoppers.

They bribed out and bought big gov. long ago and constantly get special favors like gov. contracts (Haliburton) and subsidies.
knucklesandwichanarc 2 years ago
Go on believing the delusion that gov. and business don't get along.
"Government power is backed by law and force unlike corporate power."
They're both the same thing. My local Wal-Mart got a grant of 4 million to build their store. They don't pay their workers health insurance so they have to get the ACCESS Card, so taxpayers like me can pick up Wal-Mart's slack.
The courts always back up corporations. And they've used force when necessary to protect corporate privileges around the globe.

Look up "PANIC PEDDLERS" This is a serious issue.
shumich 2 years ago
Every individual born into the USA should have the opportunity, regardless of race, religion, creed, etc., to live in a manner that contributes to the public good. This is why we have games and sports for our children (if I had any). The children then need to grow into adults that work as a team to make a better society. It doesn't matter if they're black, white, or green. We need to play and work fair with each other as human beings. I know that sounds corny. The "Child of God" thing is nice!

It may have *felt* like that, but this subjective view doesn't coincide with
objective reality. (Rosa Parks knew this) I really think a lot of suffering has to do with people being their own worst enemies. There are countless successful blacks in Chicago. People who have made their own way by not obsessing about race.
More rent? When rogers Park started to gentrify (i.e. more whites moved in) my rent went up and up and up.
itreeye 2 years ago
Yes, dude, literally. Find the books "American Pharaoh" or "When Work Disappears". Or pick up Mike Royko's "Boss" for a look at how the Cook County Democratic Political Machine was used by Daley. Sure, there's successful blacks in Chitown. Even on the Gold Coast my friend. However, it's the most racially segregated city in the country. Most blacks lived in slums with rats post WWII. Then they built "Public Aid Penitentiaries" or what some call "filing cabinets for the poor".
-Mid Rise Housing
shumich 2 years ago
I'd like to hear Uncle Tom Sowell here talk about public housing projects in Chicago. I'd like to see Sowell tell the people in the projects that the reason they're living in the projects instead of the Gold Coast or sunny California is because they didn't work hard enough. As if there is a direct path from the assembly line to the boardroom.
shumich 2 years ago
The reason they're living in the Chicago projects and not in sunny California, you illiterate shmuck, is that housing regulation restricting building drives up the cost of land so much that only the very wealthy can afford to buy homes there. It's interventions into the market for housing that create the housing shortage, and that force many middle and lower income people to live in housing projects. Thomas Sowell is an "Uncle Tom"? You're an ignorant putz.
directorMovies 2 years ago
Where did you read that you "shmuck"? I'm well read up on urban sociology and urban history . Take, for example, the Democratic Political Machine of Richard J. Daley in the Chicago of the 1960s.
This Democrat mayor and his cronies set up special conditions with building contractors, architects, political alliances, Real Estate Lobbyists etc. to build substandard housing projects. They pocketed a lot of $. Daley was in good w/ the Kennedys who got tons of federal $.
Your tax $ to the machine
shumich 2 years ago
I can refer you to a ton of newspaper and magazine articles, and first hand testimony, of people who worked in the Cook County Democratic political machine.
Real estate agencies and building contractors made tons of money off of white peoples' fears of poor blacks. As the blacks moved into the cities, the "panic peddler" from the real estate agency would be sent into white peoples' homes to warn them blacks were coming. They'd then sell their houses for cheap and move to the suburbs.

Ths. Sowell offers one fact here: he 'looks much younger than he is'. His genius lies in the ability to make a statment that has merit
and to bulls*t around that statement with cohesion. But..........................
it's still bulls**t. His whole career = b/s with cohesion.
