You could actually survive by raiding villages for stone and wood. You could kill cows for food and leather armor. Sadly you cant make a bucket to get lava to make a nether portal. But you could get armor and stone tools!

Golden apples are crafted with gold nuggets around the apple now, instead of the gold blocks, but they're a lot shittier now (only healing 2 hunger and regenerating health for 4 seconds).

Oh crap, that weird glitch that sometimes when you try to update, it gets stuck on "Downloading packages" This happend to me when 1.8 came out, but when 1.0.0 came it updated almost instantly. Any advice will help. And yes, I tried to force update.

he changed the gold apple recipe from gold ingots to gold blocks, so it takes 9x as many gold ingots to craft. As overkill as that seems, however, remember that Zombie Pigmen drop gold nuggets, which can be crafted into gold ingots. not to mention that red apples drop from leaves in survival too, so it's a win - win.
