Keep in mind, we are not technically at war. Officially, Iraq and Afghanistan are considered "conflicts". We are in "conflicts", but not at "war". It's a hilarious little loophole.
Agree with all your points exept for your premise that there is an opposition to ensure debate and due process. Besides, when did the US last declare a war? The only difference between Democrats and Republicans is the ostensive logic and political patois used to sell the show to the sheeple.
Barack "Mr Change" Obama will change the war from Iraq to Pakistan/Iran. Thanks 'B', finally someone in Warshington has listened to the voters? The Pentagram is in charge here. Support war or die.
What's the deal with "flip-flopping", anyway? Situations CHANGE, and so should the way you deal with it. NOT "flip-flopping" is what should be criticized.
Bloody hell! How arrogant can you be about this "flip-flopping" issue? I myself am a liberal, but I understand that everybody flip-flops. Liberals and Conservatives. LiberalViewer, you excel at creating issues where there are none.
Liberal Viewer! You bring important issues on the table and you make some good analysis as well, but for the love of GOD! Why you keep promoting the Daily Show or The Colbert Report all the time. I am sure you could have obtained the clip of Bush's interview with 60 minutes from somewhere else. On a side note, I really like both the shows on Comedy Central.
You proved that politicians politic! Good job with that one Liberal Viewer.
In other news, Bush does have constitutional authority to send troops wherever the hell he pleases, even if it's not "declared" war... ever heard of Vietnam? Bush also was correct in saying they could try to stop him - and ultimately they didn't because it's bad politics to say you're not funding troops.
Blame Bush for being an arrogant, stupid, bastard. Blame Congress too.
Going back to the question, he does have the power to send troops around the world, but Congress is supposed to check that power with their control over funding.
The commander and chief has the authority to command the troops. The right to declare war, and the check of the purse strings lies solely in the hands of Congress. It's sad that in more recent years, bills have been passed giving the President significantly more power then the founders intended when considering separation of powers. InformedGeek, the commander-in-chief does NOT have the right to declare war. Check the constitution, Article 1, Sec. 8, that is a power of the Legislature, a.k.a. Congress. The president has the power to initiate policing actions up to 60 days due to the War Powers Act, after which he is required to go to Congress to either gain an extension or fully declare war. So, either way, the right to declare war is in the Congress' hands. Please check the facts before calling yourself "informed."
Do you know anything? Not since the Military Commissions Act... @sicklesickle This is possibly the most mindless comment I've ever seen on youtube. Going overseas to help other countries was the most liberal thing GWB ever did. So not a debate of personal standpoints, just a comment to tell you to look up the meaning of conservative.
@SethJ08 You wish to make it clear that conservatives, historically, were not the ones to start the wars.
I understand that.
However, true conservatives have been flushed from the Republican party.
When I say conservative, perhaps I should really say neo-conservatives. It doesn't matter, however, because "Real" conservatives have lost their voice and vote in the Republican party. When they make another appearance, I'll back 'em up.
Protect us against...What, exactly? We started the war on the pretense that there were WMD's. Whoopsies, guess not! The "protecting the American people from terrorists" was a stance they took to try and partially cover their asses. Sure, there might be a need to protect us against some, but nowhere near the magnitude that they want us to think.
It's a load of bull, which is why his approval rating is at what? 30%?

Also, the War Powers Act states that even if Bush did decide to go through with his play, he would be powerless the second congress decided to oppose his decision.
democrats really looked bad after 2006 elections, they should have gone and cut the funding for the war and stuck with it out of principle, or at lease they could have made more trouble for the president, instead they gave him a chance for another blunder "the surge" which meant stability in iraq has become even more tied with US forces presence and when the new democrat takes office next year they will have a bumpy four years.
Does anyone think Dem Nancy Pelosi is the best person to defend our country? The 2006 election just determined who gets to write the tax code. Bush already has authorization to prosecute the war or stop the war. As commander-in-chief it is his decision. Maybe Nancy P. should run for Pres? It would be fun to watch middle America hand her ass to her on a silver platter.
Are we really discussing the 'best' person to defend our country? I vote for Optimus Prime. He'd probably do a better job than most. That's how ridiculous you sound. The only question should be 'Does anyone think Dem Nancy Pelosi is a better person to defend our country than George W?'
I dont even know why you would bother posting how much of an idiot bush is lol... everyone knows that that man shouldnt be allowed to go to nice places or have nice things.... everyone should probably already know that elections are for politicians that are good at bullshitting responses to all the questions to get the highest number of votes.
2008 Bush can't run again! Choose your new candidate! It's over for Bush this year! Have you been considering the new candidates? There is a lot of youtube video on them. One candidate is funded solely by the American people's DONATIONS, isn't that amazing?

get some help. Try Lakeside outreach program for mentally ill DemocRATS
You know you are sick when you think continuous bashing of Bush is humorous. Does Jon Stewart have any other material? He is lame like you maybe thats why you like him so much.
Oh and a little loser like you who has no defence other than insulting is so methaly fit, right? Come by once more when you have any valid points instead of insults, you poor undereducated child who will grow up to be a redneck. And get bill O'reilly's c0ck out of your ass.
Scary thing is, the status quo of the gop and radical fundamentalist are trying to brainwash america into this forked tongue guy named F*ckabee. This guy is so Bush, he is more Bush then Bush.
I'm just hoping that question about Bush's Constitutional authority was a joke. Congress holds the power to fund everything - the government, the army, EVERYTHING.
Um, no. Bush has the power to deploy the military, but Congress may refuse to fund such a deployment. In effect, this boils down to the President sending soldiers on a mission, Congress refusing to feed or clothe them, and then seeing who can take the PR punishment.
again, i thought this was a clip of the daily show. again, it's your droning, wanna be intellectual, wanna be talk show, wanna be liberal mewling again!!! fooled again. i did not do a "search" with the words "liberal", or "Pablum", or "oatmeal man" in them. there is a reason why stewart has a tv show and you don't. for god's sake, quit riding on stewarts shoe laces and get an original gig/thought/show, anything of somekind. pulllleezzzze!
You misunderstood what LV was saying. He was talking about Bush's arrogance in a 60min clip that he (LiberalViewer) saw on the Daily Show. And he's right, god Bush must have some balls. "Yea I do (think I have the authority to put troops in no matter what the Congress decides)" I honestly think Bush thinks of the Constitution is more like "guidelines" than actual laws.
What happens in the US dictates the global impact. That explains why I'm intrigued by US politics even though I'm from Singapore. I even took it up in college! Politics is very important in our daily lives and it is sad to see that many people have apathetic views, even in my own country. Thanks for the effort in putting clips together and drawing parallels, LiberalViewer!
This is not as important as the fact Bush's grandfather in 1942 was charged with treason for financing Hitler's rise to power. He is also linked with men who built the concentration camps and made millions off it. Now Bush acts EXACTLY like Hitler, inciting incidents like 9/11 just so he can invade sovereign counties. Sounds familiar?
I don't claim to have any formal law training, but I do know how to read and I'm pretty sure that The Constitution says 1) Congress, and only Congress, has the power to declare wars and make Treaties and 2) Congress controls "the purse." Yes he flipflopped, and what's more it's clear he doesn't care. Bush is going to do whatever he wants to do at the time no matter how many people object and unfortunately we're letting him get away with it.
What puzzles me is how Americans fail to become enraged when the government flatly tells them to go F$ck themselves. Isn't that what democracy is about? Power to the People?
We are enraged. Just look at the responses here, or any number of blogs. Many of us want to take down the government, but there's no place for us to organize, and its difficult to execute any strategy, since Bush will label anything not supportive of him as "terrorist". We're very aware, but without organization or weaponry, its difficult to do anything.
You should care because you're an american and its your job to pay attention to the leaders and what they do. The government's separation of powers was put in place for a reason and Bush is totally circumventing it all together.
I'm sorry to say this, but I would rather have U.S.A. as the strongest country, rather then Iraq, conrtolled by dictators like Saddam Hussain... And it must be hard to control 51 stats... so give him some slack, and don't vote for him next time :p
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If that's true, then america controls the stupid backwards arab countries, so the zionists control all the dune coons. Maybe your backwards clerics are right...
"Dictator like Saddam" And what would you call Bush in this day and age? He assumes he has the supreme control over the land and thus the world. He doesn't care what the majority of the people want and more importantly ignores CONGRESS. I guess its OK to fuck the country but not an intern, right?
If only there were some way to covertly organize a militia, we could -possibly- change all this. The military is flung all over the world, and it would be more difficult to stop an armed uprising from within.
Now, I do not claim to have the answers and I am just doing a fly-by enjoying LVs videos, but did we actually DECLARE war? I mean Congress only authorized the use of force, they did not DECLARE war. So in lawyer/policy language this leaves Congress in a position of severe weakness in the sense that Congress has the power to BEGIN and END wars. Thanks for your time.
In order to impeach the president, you need to go through the House in which a majority vote would set the charges against the president. After that there is a trial in the Senate in which the Chief Justice presides over. When the trial is finished and there is a vote on whether to remove the preident or not, there needs to be a 2/3 vote in favor of removal from office. In this case, since there are 100 Senators, you need 67 Senators to vote for a removal from office.
I can understand people like you twisting events to make Clinton bare more responsibility for 9/11; Fox News, et al do it all the time....but now Iraq is Clinton's fault? Please tell you are practicing some sarcasism that is going ovet my head.
he doesn't have the power to fund a war by himself, but the democrats you elected do have that power and they did it. And approval ratings are BS as proven by the 2004 election, thats a corporation with an agenda...
Yes the whole world has a leftist agenda. Only 26% of Americans got it right and their troops are winning in Iraq while pulling WMDs after WMDs out of hidden bunkers.
Bush is definitely not listening to Congress, which is absurd considering approval ratings below 30%. It is no surprise that some Republicans came out this past week against Bush on Iraq... keeping their jobs depends on it.
The most accurate poll in the United States, that has gotten the best reviews in the last 7 years, with daily updates, puts it at 39% today. It can be found at: w w w(dot)rasmussenreports(dot) com/public_content/politics/political_updates/president_bush_job_approval
The narrator sounds like a cyborg with genetics mixed from Kerry and Gore, what a self-righteous boring defeatist whining leftie... You people are a national disgrace!
Typical right wing, drug limball, knuckle dragging, mouth breathing response there skippy. Attack the messenger. No sir you remaining 26% are the disgrace.
I don't get pro bush people, even in complete support of his policy, he's really really REALLY bad at it, he's terrible, just bad. Why can't we all agree on him sucking at being president, and then discuss politics
It's a see no evil, hear no evil case. They are chickens with their heads stuck in the sand because the moment they admit the truth that their beloved prez isn't really all that they believe he is the world becomes a very scary place.
flip flop? how about "we are not into nation building" from his first presidential campaign? it's hard to tell whether he actually has any opinions (or even a mind) of his own or whether he just goes with the script that's handed him. I agree with toditron... W seems impenetrable to the idea of a mistake...of his own. Colbert nailed it at the press dinner!
no flip-flop since he really believes he and the republican party are the best for the job in iraq, even given all the mistakes made... i actually don't think he is being disingenuous, just wrong.
yes on the war powers bit, unfortunately. congress has to make the check move by giving a no confidence vote and then moving to impeach or by stopping funding, or atleast attaching benchmarks to the funds. frankly, the president is pretty damn powerful... so vote accordingly.
I dont know if Viacom would spend money on some YouTube user when they have bigger fish to fry, sounds like you got scared rather quickly. I agree wiht you that I don't know much about the copyright laws expect that if companies wanted they could sue all YouTube users. Nothing personal against you, but the vocieover is quite annoying. Good luck with Viacom (lol)
Again, sorry if you find my comments "annoying," but, again, youre misunderstanding fair use and what ahppended with this vid. This vid was removed from YouTube along with about 100,000 other vids last February because of accusations from Viacom. Because my vid includes my voiceover, however, Viacom's lawyers agreed with me that this vid should be replaced on YouTube. So, how was I "scared" and why do I need "Good luck with Viacom?"
Don't get me wrong, I hate Bush and his war more than the next guy...but how is this a flip-flop by bush? First you show him saying he has authority to ignore congress and send more soldiers to Iraq, and then you show him earlier on saying that the election is a referendum on which party can best protect America. Those two clips don't seem relevant to one another. He's not contradicting his statement about the election by saying that he has authority to send more troops into Iraq.
Actually, you get me wrong if you think I hate Bush, but I'm not sure what's not to get in this video. Bush said before the 2006 election that it was a referendum on which party got to decide national security (and Iraq was a big part of that 2006 debate), but now Bush is saying he will ignore the will of the Democratic Congress elected as a "referndum" on that very issue. Bush's latest veto bears out this point.
sorry, but is there a way that I can stop your videos coming up in my suggestions? I want to see the actual clip, and end up being pissed off when I here 'liberal viewer presents', warning me that im about to here a monotonous commentary about the clip i wanted to watch :(

MSH786 3 years ago
Does anyone think Dem Nancy Pelosi is the best person to defend our country? The 2006 election just determined who gets to write the tax code. Bush already has authorization to prosecute the war or stop the war. As commander-in-chief it is his decision. Maybe Nancy P. should run for Pres? It would be fun to watch middle America hand her ass to her on a silver platter.
EmperorJack1st 3 years ago
Are we really discussing the 'best' person to defend our country? I vote for Optimus Prime. He'd probably do a better job than most. That's how ridiculous you sound. The only question should be 'Does anyone think Dem Nancy Pelosi is a better person to defend our country than George W?'
I officially cast my vote for Pelosi.

MooseOfReason 4 years ago 2
then lets hope the answer was a joke, too...
4absurdity 4 years ago
Um, no. Bush has the power to deploy the military, but Congress may refuse to fund such a deployment. In effect, this boils down to the President sending soldiers on a mission, Congress refusing to feed or clothe them, and then seeing who can take the PR punishment.

AColonDashSix 4 years ago 2
We are enraged. Just look at the responses here, or any number of blogs. Many of us want to take down the government, but there's no place for us to organize, and its difficult to execute any strategy, since Bush will label anything not supportive of him as "terrorist". We're very aware, but without organization or weaponry, its difficult to do anything.

Charlie8417 4 years ago 2
If only there were some way to covertly organize a militia, we could -possibly- change all this. The military is flung all over the world, and it would be more difficult to stop an armed uprising from within.

Now, I do not claim to have the answers and I am just doing a fly-by enjoying LVs videos, but did we actually DECLARE war? I mean Congress only authorized the use of force, they did not DECLARE war. So in lawyer/policy language this leaves Congress in a position of severe weakness in the sense that Congress has the power to BEGIN and END wars. Thanks for your time.

He can't be impeached. He's THE DECIDER. Unless we can get him to decide to be impeached, it won't happen.
themonkeysays 4 years ago
I just have a general question:
How much does it take to get this guy impeached?
Yes, Clinton did some horrible things, but at least he didn't invade a country for no reason.
Or, excuse me, non-existant "Weapons of Mass Destruction"
Or remain completely oblivious to the climate crisis.
Or turn every other country in the world against us.
Tell me, how do we get this guy impeached?
iheartrent2010 4 years ago
In order to impeach the president, you need to go through the House in which a majority vote would set the charges against the president. After that there is a trial in the Senate in which the Chief Justice presides over. When the trial is finished and there is a vote on whether to remove the preident or not, there needs to be a 2/3 vote in favor of removal from office. In this case, since there are 100 Senators, you need 67 Senators to vote for a removal from office.

flip flop? how about "we are not into nation building" from his first presidential campaign? it's hard to tell whether he actually has any opinions (or even a mind) of his own or whether he just goes with the script that's handed him. u2bclarice 4 years ago
no flip-flop since he really believes he and the republican party are the best for the job in iraq, even given all the mistakes made... i actually don't think he is being disingenuous, just wrong.
yes on the war powers bit, unfortunately. congress has to make the check move by giving a no confidence vote and then moving to impeach or by stopping funding, or atleast attaching benchmarks to the funds. frankly, the president is pretty damn powerful... so vote accordingly.

Lopkop19 4 years ago
Lopkop19,
Actually, you get me wrong if you think I hate Bush, but I'm not sure what's not to get in this video. Bush said before the 2006 election that it was a referendum on which party got to decide national security (and Iraq was a big part of that 2006 debate), but now Bush is saying he will ignore the will of the Democratic Congress elected as a "referndum" on that very issue. Bush's latest veto bears out this point.
Thx 4 comment :-)
