I actually read this play for English class sophomore year, and I'm surprised at the number of people that see this play as being a debate of evolution vs. creationism, which may be true of the Scopes trial it was based on. Drummond emphasizes that Cates was on trial because he was thinking for himself, that which the play conveys is a fundamental human right and that which no human on this planet should be arrested and imprisoned for.

The play "Inherit the Wind" and all the movies based on it are dramatizations of real events. The trial was real and the Butler Act was real, but the play and movies are simply emphasizing the importance of the events. They're made to get the point across in a powerful manner.

The point was that there was no definitive time scale for the "days" of creation, instead of thinking of "day" as we do now, think about what it could have been back then
The word "day" could be seen as referencing a saga of sorts, each new "day" presented a new phase of creation, but there wasn't a set time for how long each "day"

@myralangerhas Actually, I have read the transcript of the trial. Much of the court room testimony in the play was taking directly from the trial transcript. This is particularly true of of Darrow's examination of Bryan.

How long was a day compared to today. Were these days uniform in length or were they more like era's of certain times and phases of the history of our planet.
As we all know, this film is NOT correct according to history. But, the arguments that are put forward are still valid. There is a reason why Darwinian evolution won in the courtroom that day. There is a reason why creationisms must never be allowed to enter any classroom. And the reasoning behind it is building up every day, in labs all over the world . Science is the only thing that makes us truly better than animals. without it, we would still be digging with sticks.
"Better than animals" is incorrect for one and even if it was not it is still only a matter of perspective.
Humans are animals so we can't really be better than them now can we? So that is why that part si wrong. Then gorillas are stronger than we are so are they better than us? In strength yes, in size yes but in intellect no. It's all relative.
We do have the superior intellect but sometimes we don't act any better than animals. It still doesn't seem to stop us from trying to kill and hurt one another. And we should certainly not let this feeling of superiority go to our heads, because at this very moment, we have the capacity to destroy the Earth nearly six times over and to eradicate nearly all complex life on this planet. All that has taken billions of years to form can be wiped out in a matter of weeks, if humans so choose.
The problem is that the word "better" is useless without standards. The standards are ours, intelligence has allowed us to survive, so we look down on creatures of lesser intelligence, even though they are by no means less survivable, even though they will outlast us by countless thousands of years.

PLAY: The Christians of Dayton, Tennessee are portrayed ignorant, closedminded, & discourteous. Ex: When Darrow finally arrives in town, a young Christian girl screams, The Devil!, and then runs off in fear.
Facts: (Darrow) "I don't know as I was ever in a community in my life where my religious ideas differed as widely from the great mass ... Yet I came here a perfect stranger ... I have been treated better, kindlier, & more hospitably than I fancied would have been the case in the north.'
Fiction: Throughout this play, William Jennings Bryan is portrayed as closed-minded, pompous, stupid, intolerant, hypocritical, insincere and gluttonous.
Facts: Bryan is reported by one of his biographers, Lawrence W. Levine, to have READ Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" 20 years before the Scopes trial! Bryan's reservations about evolution theory were certainly influenced by his religious beliefs, but he had written many well-argued articles critical of the evidence used to defend the theory of evolution.
Author Sprague de Camp compelled him to give Bryan credit for at least some undeniable virtues:
'As a speaker, Bryan radiated good-humored sincerity. Few who heard him could help liking him. That being the case, its unethical for either the religious or anti-religious to be seeking war with the other or seeking the other's destruction so that their ideology may benefit. This, ladies and gentleman, is why I'm a Unitarian Universalist; it leaves room open for everyone and eliminates bigotry.

That is certainly not one of the greatest values of religious culture. Why should we believe there is a Heaven, just in case. If God is as religions proclaim, why would he punish me merely for not having faith. Wouldn't being a decent person, despite a lack of divine incentive, be more substantial and sincere than faith 'just in case'?

The play "Inherit the Wind" and all the movies based on it are dramatizations of real events. The trial was real and the Butler Act was real, but the play and movies are simply emphasizing the importance of the events. They're made to get the point across in a powerful manner.
I also doubt most people posting here have actually read On the Origin of Species. Please go do so before posting here. I might also recommend reading On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres and The Principia.

The point was that there was no definitive time scale for the "days" of creation, instead of thinking of "day" as we do now, think about what it could have been back then
The word "day" could be seen as referencing a saga of sorts, each new "day" presented a new phase of creation, but there wasn't a set time for how long each "day"

As we all know, this film is NOT correct according to history. But, the arguments that are put forward are still valid. There is a reason why Darwinian evolution won in the courtroom that day. PLAY: Bryan loses all sense of dignity and reason and goes into an incoherent tirade to read his concluding statement. Bryan mindlessly continues with his closing remarks, and collapses on the courtroom floor, dead.
FACTS: Neither Bryan nor Darrow attempted to give the customary closing argument to the jury. The Judge eliminated the need for closing arguments.
Bryan did not die in the courthouse in a raving frenzy. He died in his sleep at the age of 65, five days AFTER the trial.

FACTS: Violation of the Butler Act was punishable by a fine of no less that $100 and no greater than $500; imprisonment was not a provision of the law. Bryan was not the least concerned about the fine, nor was anyone else. Indeed, Bryan had offered to pay Scopes' fine.

BRYAN: 'I believe in the truth of the Book of Genesis! (With clenched fists he pounds the air, rhythmic hammer blows of conviction as he recites the books of the OT.)
After court is adjourned, the spectators begin to leave while Bryan continues to beat the air with clenched fists.
FACTS: Bryan didn't recite the OT books with a frenzy. This is just another attempt to depict Bryan as a raving religious lunatic.

The Play: Darrow questions Bryan on the topic of sex:
DARROW: You're up here as an expert on the Bible. What's the Biblical evaluation of sex?
BRYAN: 'It is considered Original Sin.'
The Facts: Nothing was discussed about sex in the trial. Nor does the Bible teach that the original sin was sexual in nature.

C'mon, it's a play. It was BASED on the original trail, got the idea, not meant to be a fact-by-fact retelling of reality. It was made for drama.

The Play: Scope's fiancée 'Rachel Brown' is called as a witness and is badly mistreated by Bryan, who forces her to testify by insisting she repeat deeply personal conversations between her and Scopes. Bryan loses his selfcontrol and becomes cruel and merciless in his questioning of the frightened young lady.

The Facts: No such women participated in the trial. Scopes did not have a special girlfriend or fiancée at this time. Bryan was courteous at all times in his handling of witnesses, as the trial transcript reveals. In fact, DARROW was cited for contempt of court for repeatedly interrupting and insulting Judge Raulston.

Facts: (Darrow) "I don't know as I was ever in a community in my life where my religious ideas differed as widely from the great mass ... Yet I came here a perfect stranger ... I have been treated better, kindlier, & more hospitably than I fancied would have been the case in the north.'

Facts: Bryan is reported by one of his biographers, Lawrence W. Levine, to have READ Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" 20 years before the Scopes trial! Bryan's reservations about evolution theory were certainly influenced by his religious beliefs, but he had written many well-argued articles critical of the evidence used to defend the theory of evolution.

Author Sprague de Camp compelled him to give Bryan credit for at least some undeniable virtues:
'As a speaker, Bryan radiated good-humored sincerity. Few who heard him could help liking him. In personality he was forceful, energetic, and opinionated but genial, kindly, generous, likeable and charming. He showed a praise-worthy tolerance towards those who disagreed with him. Bryan was the greatest American orator of his time and perhaps any time.'

Indeed it is a good movie- and screw those Creationists who blasted it as inaccurate. Maybe it is, but its not the point- but the arguments for the defense of Reason against mindless stupidity. Everyday i would see liars who deliberately demonize Darwin (an Anglican) and biologists and twist the evolution theory and fact out of context. I seen the evidence, man, i studied it in IB, and i say the theory is viable and it is a FACT because they logically make sense

I think that creationists and evolutionists are both wrong. Here's why: Evolutionists assume that there is nothing that needs to be taken on faith and Creationists dismiss all scientific evidence of evolution. Both of these approaches are wrong. I have more info on ideapals in the intelligent design of evolution group.
