I'm watching De La Rey for a history class and I'm finding it difficult to be moved by it at all. I don't understand why the Boers are being portrayed as victims in a country that wasn't theirs to begin with. So it's okay that the Boers displaced the Zulu, Ndebele and numerous other tribes but it's not okay that the British did the same to the Boers? Not so much fun when you're on the receiving end eh.

I believe that the way the British fought the war showed that they had lost the plot. First, they wasted many of their own soldiers in ridiculous battle tactics. Then, they lost their gentleman's skill of negotiation and refused to allow for diplomatic solutions. Then they resorted to scorched earth tactics. All this sadly made Germany a nation who would not trust Britain. The creed of "for God" was replaced by "for Gold and glory".

moving song. i'm from belgium and understanding afrikaans for a dutch speaking (the n1 language in Belgium) is like scottish in the ears of an english speaking, very funny and in our ears it's a bit child-like (while it's a full-fledged language), yet the song very much isn't.
I'm British and I have a many great Afrikaner friends. I disapprove of everything the Britsh empire did to its subjects. I was brought up believing that my country's empire was great, however I now know that the means of which they obtained it and what happend to the people was and still is dispicable. This song can be considered racist as much of apartheid (as well as pre-apartheid racism) can easily be attributed to Boers, and this song seems to be calling for the Boers to regain their lost country--though not necessarily with their conservative, racist ideologies of the past. And surely not all Boers were racists... but many by-and-large were.
Despite that, I still like this song... It's very emotional (not to mention catchy). Plus, De La Rey was, for the most part, a noble man.

As someone from the American South, I can relate to this song. Our Dela Rey was Bedford Forrest and John Mosby. Instead of British invaders, we had Yankees. We also lost our country. Our homes and farms were also burned and our civilians thrown into prisons and jails. The world also hates us and is convinced that our very existence is a threat. Like our Boer brothers, all we can do is survive. Our very survival is a victory over our enemies.
One thing most people don't know or see is that those responsible for racist comments and acts in South Africa are mostly young people that was below the age of 15 when apartheid ended, just like Malema. Content showed on local TV shows doesn't help the situation either. Anyways, this is a great song.

I grew up in Canada, my parents moved here from South Africa, I can speak Afrikaans and I hear stories about "Suid-Afrika" but I just wish it would have been safe to grow up there, and I know I would have been a proud Afrikaner. There were Americans fighting for the Boers as well as Germans, Italians and others that wanted to take a stand against British imperialism. Can someone post for me a phonetic transcription of the Afrikaans (for an English speaker?) I find this song interesting and moving despite the very complicated context. Sometimes it is helpful to be able to understand the pain of both sides. If anyone is interested, the writer Nicholas Freeling does this for European conflicts better than anyone I know.

I believe that the way the British fought the war showed that they had lost the plot. First, they wasted many of their own soldiers in ridiculous battle tactics. Then, they lost their gentleman's skill of negotiation and refused to allow for diplomatic solutions. Then they resorted to scorched earth tactics. All this sadly made Germany a nation who would not trust Britain. The creed of "for God" was replaced by "for Gold and glory".

This song can be considered racist as much of apartheid (as well as pre-apartheid racism) can easily be attributed to Boers, and this song seems to be calling for the Boers to regain their lost country--though not necessarily with their conservative, racist ideologies of the past. And surely not all Boers were racists... but many by-and-large were.
Despite that, I still like this song... It's very emotional (not to mention catchy). Plus, De La Rey was, for the most part, a noble man.

England is colony on Welsh land, but few moan, even me with Welsh ancestors prior Africa. People always been fighting for land, so we have to accept past happened, can't change that, move forward. @Rocketpeace1 Basically, government won't let kids be homeless.... nice.... but poor girls don't want factory job, so fail school, lots of babies and get free flat/money to feed kids. Meanwhile hard working people... male + female want careers, so no kids... upper class shrinking while lower class multiplying fast... government can't pay welfare bills, but won't take kids' homes, so mentally disabled's money cut - that's disgusting - mentally ill must work to pay lazy healthy girls to watch TV.

@Rocketpeace1 I live in England, parts are very 3rd world.... certain infamous parts London where police have lost control of ganglords and don't really have a clue who is murdering who...... though it's not as bad as Jo'burg yet, that simply being because there are less poor people waiting for a handout....... I respect welfare state, appreciate ill, disabled, depressed struggle work and need help, but there many arrogant privileged welfare cheats who watch TV, take drugs + make babies all day.

@Rocketpeace1 Did you actually READ what I wrote? "Third world" means a powerful intrusive government and a culture oriented to immediate gratification with little concern for the future. Here is an example: in the USA, most welfare recipients who live in government housing are African-American. In Boston, they put the Irish on welfare and put them in government housing. Those Irish act just like the blacks, though their skin is the lightest in the world. Understand?

I want America OUT of the middle east, OUT of Europe, Japan, and Korea. In short, I want America to MIND OUR OWN BUSINESS. BTW, you Iranians have darker skin than northern Europeans but you are the same race as we are. Look up the derivation of "Aryan"...YOU are it. As someone from the American South, I can relate to this song. Our Dela Rey was Bedford Forrest and John Mosby. Instead of British invaders, we had Yankees. We also lost our country. Our homes and farms were also burned and our civilians thrown into prisons and jails. The world also hates us and is convinced that our very existence is a threat. Like our Boer brothers, all we can do is survive. Our very survival is a victory over our enemies.

One thing most people don't know or see is that those responsible for racist comments and acts in South Africa are mostly young people that was below the age of 15 when apartheid ended, just like Malema. Content showed on local TV shows doesn't help the situation either. Anyways, this is a great song.

I grew up in Canada, my parents moved here from South Africa, I can speak Afrikaans and I hear stories about "Suid-Afrika" but I just wish it would have been safe to grow up there, and I know I would have been a proud Afrikaner. My parents have lived in Canada for over 18 years now, but they still long for their beautiful homeland.

There were Americans fighting for the Boers as well as Germans, Italians and others that wanted to take a stand against British imperialism. But to be honest, we were also involved during that time quelling our own insurrections by the Moros in the Philippine Islands where we employed much of the same tactics.

There were a mixture of black and whites fighting the British.. unbelievably white and blacks of south africa did once work together.. but i guess that went to hell nowadays sadly :(

Can someone post for me a phonetic transcription of the Afrikaans (for an English speaker?) I find this song interesting and moving despite the very complicated context. Sometimes it is helpful to be able to understand the pain of both sides. If anyone is interested, the writer Nicholas Freeling does this for European conflicts better than anyone I know.
