I used to love Speed racer as a kid. Does anyone know if the characters are supposed to be american or did the japanese think of speed racer as Japanese? I ask because Pops looks very american to me and would be hard to imagine as passing for a japanese character.

@bewarethedecks @bewarethedecks Yes and like many Japanese to American anime translations, the show in Japan was more about the machine than the human characters in the USA. So their show is about the Mach 5 (Go is 5 in Japanese). Similar to the Anime scifi epic, "Space Battleship Yamato". The Japanese lauded the machine whereas in the US, we renamed it and dubbed the song "Star Blazers" (the crew of the ship). It is a cultural thing. I dated a Japanese girl once and she had explained it to me.

I loved this when I was a kid. In hindsight, it's absolutely amazing that they animated those '3-d' rotations of the car and Speed by hand. Especially that full 90 degree one at the end. And the car was always 'on model' in the show. Hmm... and Speed murders someone at 0:42. As a kid I never noticed that. :LOL

@EliroX904 For all of you who may not know. Peter Fernandez starred in an awesome 1948 movie called

"City Across The River" about Brooklyn Street gangs in the 1940s. It also starred a young Tony Curtis and Thelma Ritter. It's a very good movie, you ought to check it out. To my knowledge, it's the first time the word "spic" was used in a movie. Which is hilarious because Peter Fernandez uses that word, meanwhile in real life he was Spanish himself. I guess that's why it's called acting!!

Cool show, cool theme song, one of my favorite shows as a kid. The remastered episodes are on DVD and I have them. My own kids, ages 9, 6 and 5 love them. BTW, did you notice during the end credits that after the 1960's era car, there was a "jet car" on wheels and then a flying car? That's what was expected in the space-age 1960's. Too bad we in 2011 still have plain old cars that need gas.

The Kaiser in Kaiser-Globe Broadcasting refers to Edgar Kaiser, the bastard who's responsible for us having shitty HMOs today (he's the Kaiser of Kaiser Permanente; he started out as an aluminum tycoon with Kaiser Metals and then bought Globe Broadcasting).

Most of the TV stations that aired it were independent stations, usually on the UHF dial. Its popularity was instantaneous, and apparently you (as do I) remember it very fondly.

Both stations may have been the same one, because Channel 56 was a Kaiser-Globe station and was one of the earliest "pay TV" or cable stations in the US. Do you remember if the call letters of your station were WKGB? If they were, they were the same as mine.
