@MrParkFan I'm with you. Cartoon Network stinks nowadays. The only exception I can think of is Ben 10 Alien Force; that show is really good. But that's only one good show compared to the whole bunch they had farther back.
One question to people who watched this cartoon, was Tatsunoko envolved in the development of this series?! I've never watched the entire thing since I was still a kid.
@TreadwellJay Now that I know, Can anyone explain why the fuck he was cut from Tatsunoko vs Capcom?! Speed would've been like the "Captian Falcon" of the game, and I would've loved to see him fight Jin Saotome from Capcom's Cyberbots... All I got to say is, that game better have a sequel!
Aww, this is so great. I have all the episodes on DVD, but it has been so long since I saw the original opening/closing that I had forgotten what they looked like. So glad to see them again!
is there difference between the voices in the remastering or the dvd version? do they talk like they did in the cartoo with the fast talking awkward dialogue
I used to love Speed racer as a kid. Does anyone know if the characters are supposed to be american or did the japanese think of speed racer as Japanese? I ask because Pops looks very american to me and would be hard to imagine as passing for a japanese character.
@bewarethedecks@bewarethedecks Yes and like many Japanese to American anime translations, the show in Japan was more about the machine than the human characters in the USA. So their show is about the Mach 5 (Go is 5 in Japanese). Similar to the Anime scifi epic, "Space Battleship Yamato". The Japanese lauded the machine whereas in the US, we renamed it and dubbed the song "Star Blazers" (the crew of the ship). It is a cultural thing. I dated a Japanese girl once and she had explained it to me.
@TreadwellJay HA HA!!! So true... That non-reading moron needs to have his grandma get him a subscription to "Highlights" or "Weekly Reader" and get him into a Sylvan Learning Center.
I grew up in NYC, and there used to be a Tras Lux movie theatre on Madison and 85th (torn down in the 80's). I never knew until years later Trans Lux had a chain of them. They're still in business, but, no longer any connection with their past. Speed... still the coolest guy - with the coolest car. The movie's Mach 5 was a sad imitation. A friend once saw in a bathroom: 'Speed Racer fans are EVERYWHERE.' Love it. Thanks!
I loved this when I was a kid. In hindsight, it's absolutely amazing that they animated those '3-d' rotations of the car and Speed by hand. Especially that full 90 degree one at the end. And the car was always 'on model' in the show. Hmm... and Speed murders someone at 0:42. As a kid I never noticed that. :LOL
@EliroX904 For all of you who may not know. Peter Fernandez starred in an awesome 1948 movie called
"City Across The River" about Brooklyn Street gangs in the 1940s. It also starred a young Tony Curtis and Thelma Ritter. It's a very good movie, you ought to check it out. To my knowledge, it's the first time the word "spic" was used in a movie. Which is hilarious because Peter Fernandez uses that word, meanwhile in real life he was Spanish himself. I guess that's why it's called acting!!
The woman who did the voices for Trixie and Spritle on "Speed Racer" went on to provide the voice for Snuggle, the fabric softener teddy bear. Her name is Corinne Orr.
Did you know that Speed Racer was once shown on MTV back in the '90, but that was when that Net. was worth watching. Now is it nothing but garbage they do not even show music video any more.
Cool show, cool theme song, one of my favorite shows as a kid. The remastered episodes are on DVD and I have them. My own kids, ages 9, 6 and 5 love them. BTW, did you notice during the end credits that after the 1960's era car, there was a "jet car" on wheels and then a flying car? That's what was expected in the space-age 1960's. Too bad we in 2011 still have plain old cars that need gas.
This was a great show. Sad to say that Warner Bros. RUINED the movie, it had so much potential! Warners should have taken the idea seriously, but they unfortunately went all Spy Kids on us.
My mom grew up watching speed racer, and in turn she raised me on it. LOL 18 years later and I still would rather watch it than anything else out there.
they use to play the unremastered original version of speed race, the 1 shown here wen i was in second grade on cartoon network in the middle of the night. i use to set my alarm to wake up and watch it. it came on either before or after gumby. who remembers that? round 1998-1999

Now this is the good shit. I grew up watching this every morning before heading off to kindergarten class. I used to sing the song as a kid but always said "doci racer" instead of "go speed racer", lmao. Wish my kids could grow up on this stuff instead of the garbage on tv.
This is great stuff. Reminds me of happy go lucky, simpler times. I used to hurry home from school to watch Speed Racer followed by Ultra Man. Good times baby...good times.
@liegeofshadows Yep, the guy in the red car on "Speed Racer" is like the crew member in the red shirt on "Star Trek" - you know they're gonna "buy the farm".
@jgc760 Yes indeed! I grew up watching that Kaiser Boston station (WKGB, Channel 56 - now it's WLVI and it's CW). The Kaiser in Kaiser-Globe Broadcasting refers to Edgar Kaiser, the bastard who's responsible for us having shitty HMOs today (he's the Kaiser of Kaiser Permanente; he started out as an aluminum tycoon with Kaiser Metals and then bought Globe Broadcasting).
@er6789er 1964--you to? I watched S-R when it first came on in late '69 along with Astro-Boy, Gigantor, Marineboy & the British import, Thunderbirds. Thank you God for letting me be a kid back then! I've said elsewhere on Youtube that I've been reliving my childhood since I was 6 yrs old!(Heh)
@IrisMG LOL good question at the end...may i ask how old or young u may be? i'm late 40's plz believe me when i say it wasn't the first Speed Racer in the 90's......it was the 70's early too...
@Pisces31660 Yes, if you'll note my comment from 3 months ago (which I assumed is the one you were replying to in the first place) I was 7 in 1968 when I first saw Speed Racer. I turn 50 in ten days.
@IrisMG "Speed" debuted in Japan in 1966 and was syndicated in an English version to the States and other English speaking countries in '67. Most of the TV stations that aired it were independent stations, usually on the UHF dial. Its popularity was instantaneous, and apparently you (as do I) remember it very fondly.
@sierria64 I grew up in the Boston area, and used to watch it on Channel 56 as well. Both stations may have been the same one, because Channel 56 was a Kaiser-Globe station and was one of the earliest "pay TV" or cable stations in the US. Do you remember if the call letters of your station were WKGB? If they were, they were the same as mine.
The detail, shading and artwork in the 1960's Speed Racer still rivals some modern anime. The Mach 5 remains one of the coolest car designs in history.
Did you notice at 2:17 when speed jumps out, time pauses and the camera spins around him. Where did we see that effect later in film? THE MATRIX, and then who made the speed racer movie? Same directors! Wow~ Speed did it first!

Remember that movie? The one with Uma Thurman and John Travolta,
and Samuel L. Jackson, and that guy? He played the drug dealer.
He wore a t-shirt that had 'Speed Racer' on it. Oh yeah, Eric Stoltz
was his name - everybody says his wife is Bridget Fonda, even though
they technically never walked down the aisle.

Music theory. Some girl once told me, or rather her boyfriend told me
her theory about music - It's like sex. Slow, and then reaches a
crescendo... You really only want to listen to female singers. That
said, I like that allusion - the speed demon... Decades later, I would
realize that there was another possibility : the speed reader.

I miss this show so much and I remember they still ran the original openings and closing segments from the syndicated versions in the 1970`s

Ahh...I had such a crush on Speed when I was, like, four years old. I thought he could do anything.
