RIDICULOUSLY COMPLEX !! I have a UV Serii-Pen (less than a minute using standard rechargable batts AA or AAA) ... And I have both Aqua-Mira tablets (one per liter) and Katadyne and Aquamira filters, from Ranger-Straws up to Base Camps. I also carry Chlorox and a (wood or esbit or alchohol) stove system.
And, I am about to add potassium permanganate crystals, which only takes a few tiny crystals per liter. The MIOX system, described here is just "silly" complex .. dependent ... no effin way
Uhh, nice review, cept you were wrong about the purifier vs. filter thing. Almost ALL water FILTERS will filter out viruses and protozoa such as giardia, and crypto.
@UTUBELO Some water filters can filter out viruses and such, but a good majority do not. Protozoa, girardia, and crypto are the main ones that filters can get, but viruses are smaller and require a much finer filter or purification. My MSR filter is .2 mirons and will not filter out viruses.
@UTUBELO I'm sorry, but you have been misinformed. A microfilter can only filter bacteria down to one micron. Which is is sufficient for use outdoors in the US. To eleminate virises you need a purifier. Bleach, iodine, Miox solution, or UV light, are the most reconized way of killing or sterilizing virises so they can't reproduce. You can also boil water for 5 min to be safe. If you are wondering which is nastier, a virise can infect a bacteria.
I use this device at home since 7 years now (my wather is not potable), it is great...
I have ceramic filter like katadin pocket but have to been cleaned pratically everyday, if you do not, WC CALL; got annoing to se it. I have also the STERIPEN but batteries must be replaced once at week and whit cold water need double treatment (or don t work). Clorine are good but cost lot of money (Italy). When i don t boil water, i use MIOX, no problem at all. 2 liters at day, run for 25 days one charge
This is correct on the filter, (I don't recall if I mentioned that in my video or not.) I always use a filter first and then either boil or treat the water after it is filtered. Cold weather does slow down the process, and I usually boil in cold weather as opposed to the MIOX. A hot drank in cold weather is very nice! However, I would still use it (and have) in cold weather as a back up. I just have to wait longer.
I use a Katadyn Vario as my filter. It is a good piece of kit.
I should also mention that cold weather, especially extreme cold, can have drastic effects on battery powered equipment. When using the MIOX in cold weather, keep it or the batteries as warm as possible.
Um, isn't it lighter/faster/cheaper and more convenient to take an eye dropper filled with bleach with you to purify your water source? Spending $100 bucks to create a bleach solution to put in your water seems retarded not to mention that you still have to bring both rock salt and extra batteries with this gadget adding more weight. And it takes too long...
@georgio941 Bleach works well, but has a shelf life of only a few months before it becomes useless. The batteries in the MIOX are rated for 10 years of storage (I would replace every 3- 5 just in case) and Rock salt can last a very long time.
Even so, I have never been in the bush for longer than 2 weeks. So unless you are a native and never are in contact with civilisation for over a month I don't see your point or any of them for that matter.
It would take about the same amount of time for the bleach to purify the water as it does the MIOX. It weighs very little, so I would not even consider the weight factor. The problem with transporting bleach is that the bottle you transport it around in can leak and would weigh roughly about the same as the Miox unit and extra salt. It isn't retarded to have several means to purify your water besides boiling.
It would take the same amount of time to purify because the MIOX is making bleach which is what I carry. What I meant by time is not the waiting period for the bleach to sterilise the water but rather the time it took you to load the device with salt and water to create the bleach itself. My eyedropper has never leaked... seems like you are trying to justify the MIOX. I personally don't consider the MIOX an alternate water purification system since it is creating the same solution (bleach).
While it is cheaper to buy bleach, $100 is very reasonable for a reliable water treatment device that will purify many, many gallons of water in its lifetime. If you can't justify $100 for the MIOX, then by all means stick with bleach.
With $100 bucks I can buy a lot o other gear. Using electrolysis to turn salt and water into Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) I think is a waste of time and money but if you can justify its use than that is all that matters.
you can chose minimum is half liter per session (0,52 quart ) max is 4 liter (4,2 qt) in steps of 0,5-1-2-4
I have this one and use it pratically every day since 6 years, also have Steripen and Katadin pump (ceramic filter 60000 liters). The Steripen is more simple and fast to use. The Miox is the best of the best in bad condition (i llike it a lot). The pump uff... I don' t use it anymore.

Or just buy a Steripen and make your life much easier.

What about volume of water, do you use the same solution for a gallon? Or increase the wait time?

Sitting indoor and talking about outdoor items..

@tunfalk Yes. It is a much better filming environment than outdoors. I am going to post some videos of outdoor usage in the future if I have time.

Its important for people to know that this is not a physical filter and hence will not take out particulates.
Also, this device does NOT remove dangerous chemicals, as a carbon filter will.
This device is simply for killing virus, bacteria and protozoa if given plenty of time at room temperature. Much longer at cold temperatures.
It has a very narrow window of opportunity, such as a very clear stream after the water has been at least coffee filtered.

Very good.
Even lithium batteries carry only about 40% of its power at about freezing temps.
I am still not sure exactly what niche this device will fill.
Its simply electrolysis using NaCl as its electrolyte.
Our grandparents have been doing it in school even before the T.V.
I guesstimate the parts total about $10 at most.
To charge people over $100 for this is criminal.
I cab only imagine that media executives and politicians are some how behind the scamming with Miox.

@solobackpacking I already said the same thing as you many posts back. People will buy it because capitalism thrives on the ignorant and uninformed.

I'd probably go the extra step and filtrate what you just made with an MSR filter then store it in my lister bag for short term use.
