I actually liked these scenes. I thought it was cute (and realistic) that though Marlena is a psychiatrist and is in her own healthy relationship with John, she gets so rattled as a parent when it comes to her daughter's sexuality.

I absolutely agree. I remember loving this scene when it first aired. They are so believable as parents of teenage kids. And I swear, I remember my parents having this exact conversation years ago when they throught I wasn`t listening. Parents will be parents I suppose ;)
