When the Album Up came out the guys talked about how this song was a Direct Homage to Brian Wilson. It was inspired by the Beach Boys album smiley smile. Michael wrote the lyrics as a gift to Mike and Peter because of how much they love the Beach Boys. It still remains the purest love song he's ever written.

I saw them in Houston on this tour... the show at which Michael Stipe did the a capella (and apparently impromptu) version of "Galveston". Anyhow, the concert was absolutely amazing as I'm sure most of the shows probably were. This was an incredible tour.
