haven't been on that ship since october 2003, but i damn sure miss it now that i have grown up...so weird, steering it with a cup of coffee in hand at 3am...
Wow, I think you're the first person I've seen saying that they miss that ship. :-) Also, I noticed the GW was surprisingly maneuverable each time we pulled back into NOB.
As a mom, whose son just arrived in Japan on Christmas day to serve on the George Washington carrier, I too, appreciate the inside look at the ship he will be serving aboard.
As for the language of this young man, they are taught all through their young lives, that profanity is acceptable. It has become so commonplace. I would guess that this young man does not even have the capability to express himself in his native language, as he is so used to expressing himmself with the use of profanity.
While I agree that the language is rather nasty & the cameraman seems particularly interested in poo, as a mother with a son on that ship, it's nice to see parts of it that I would have never seen otherwise.
I spent 3 years on that ship from 2004 to 2007 and it changed alot. Of course, this video made a mockery of her. Stick ot watching videos and not making them. Even sailors don't cuss as much as you do.
Actually, the cursing is about right for the enlisted side (especially the deckhands and airdales). For officers, maybe not as much. Regardless, I gotta agree with you about the cameraman.
I was on that ship from Jan 06 to Apr 09 and enlisted and officers both curse the same. There is no officer and a gentleman stuff on board there. Oh and it also doesn't matter what rate you are. Sounds like you have a bit of a prejudice towards airdales and deck. Most everyone no matter rate or enlisted or officer they all talk pretty much the same.
You were on the ship... and? I pre-comm'd GW and lived aboard her the first 4 years she was in service, but don't feel the need to emphasize it here. Perhaps times have changed from when I served, but I assure you cursing was kept to a minimum inside the GW CDC (CiC) and our EW module during my stint. As for prejudice, one of my best friends to this day is a BM and even HE'LL tell ya the cursing was lopsided between the Deck and Operations departments.
Ok well between your time on board and now... Thats 18 years and a lot has changed on there. I worked with deck for a few months and I was in OPS and it was about the same all around. You are comparing one division to entire departments. Look things were different back then but the GW is a completely different ship now. And some of my really good friends are BM's, OS's, IT's and many others. You were on the ship... And? That was 18 years ago. Times change.
Fair enough and very sad to hear how things are now. But it wasn't just my division, that's for sure. And I left the ship 13 years ago, not 18 (looks a little better in writing, but thanks for reminding me how OLD I am nonetheless. ^_^). Btw - OS's SUCK *little joke between EW's and OS's*
It is sad because that could be a great ship and command. The attitude of most on there is that they are the toughest thing around and they dont have to follow any type of standard. It was a really frustrating place to work. I am glad you had a better experience on board then I did. Don't get me wrong... I had some good times but I also had a lot of trying times.
As the newest CVN (at the time), we were the flagship of the East Coast and always had a 1 or 2 star flag officer embarked. I suppose it made for a better-behaved crew in a sense. And I also understand what you're saying about potential. In fact, whenever anyone asks me what I liked MOST about the Navy and what I liked LEAST, the answer is the same... the people.
I definitely understand what you mean about the people being the best and worst part of the job. I can only hope that the command turns around in the future for the sake of those that are serving aboard her now and for those that will be in the future. I would really like to see things go back to the way they were 10 years ago or so. The Navy now is very corporate-like now. Would like to hear how other commands are though. Worked with a few others and they were nice to be at.
