I never quite understood why they have slipcovers over their L85 and their Euphonium. That looks so ugly. The L85 isn't even a good looking weapon for parading. Good thing that the German Wachbataillon still uses the Mauser Kar 98.
ffs! people! stop messaging me over my comment! all i said was i prefer the way the Koreans march! i'm not saying "oh yeah, the british suck ass, long live korea"!
Unseren britischen Freunden wünsche ich Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
@Nemecross I kinda thought the opposite myself. I just love british military tradition....traditions that goes back hundreds of years and hasn't changed. Unlike the North korean's hell march, this british parade dates back hundreds of years and hasn't changed in all that time.
Thanks for posting. Great stuff. I was a fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy but am very proud of my British heritage and the British military. My cousin is a retired RSM. The assertion that 80% of the American military on parade have never served is patently absurd.
@zeeman512 The Grenadier Guards stay at Waterloo barracks, London. I don't know where the rest stay, but the reason they ''march and randomly stamp their feet when they are on the guard at the palace'' is them patrolling and also gets the blood flowing.
love this :) also good knowing each and everyone of these guys has served. i was shocked to find out that about 80% of american armies on parades haven't served a day in their lives. outrageous.
@sabaton1231 As a retired Army Band tuba player, I have to dispute your claim. 99.9% of military musicians (with the possible exception of those at the premier bands in DC) have been through the same basic training as other members of the armed forces. Many have also been through other training, and have come to military bands from other military occupational specialties. I don't know who gave your your 80% statistic, but I have to tell you that they don't know what they're talking about.
@sabaton1231 You're dead wrong. I'm an aircraft mechanic in the USAF and I worked with someone who was in Tops in Blues a couple years back. They only do the "band or show" gig for a couple years then they go back to their regular job in the military.
@IRememberTheOldDays Some do. Mainly because we don't have a monarch anymore. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for being a republic, but we are surrounded by monarchies. The Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands, Belgium...and Britain's not that far away either. I enjoy watching military parades, which is something we simply don't have in Germany anymore. Once in a while when a president (or, recently, the Minister of Defence) resigns there's an event that's broadcast, but other than that...
@TheRawke I love watching the Grossen Zapfenstreich and Ive also watched the inaugural ceremonies of Karl-Theodore zu Guttenburg and Gerhard Schroder. Damn thats some fine parading, you need to do it more often! Your traditions are lovely! Id love to move to Kiel at some point
@GuyLyddonable Well, you did your part in killing off our monarchy, so we might as well enjoy yours. Also, never forget - the royal family's name wasn't always Windsor...
@warx To me it seems to be the beginning of the choral "Ein' feste Burg ist unser Gott", even if it is obviously turned into an army march. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy used this theme as well in the last movement of his 5th symphony.
@MIRETNAVY They would not be unemployed. They are all combat troops. The 1st battaloin Scots Guards whiose colour is being trooped, have in fact just returned from Afghanistan.
@MrSpringer75 Ich war live dabei! Es ist ganz fantastisch, ein ganz tolles Erlebnis und Ereignis. Ich finde die Tradition ganz toll! Hoffe das immer beibehalten wird.
