You are right, it has given many notable staples to the Mario universe, most notably Bom-ombs and Birdo. As for him saving the world literally, it was more of a Superhero dream. Think of you dying (as with real life) as Mario waking up. And yes, her floating shows up in many games after SMB2, thanks.
