  • Presumably a man like Del wouldn't attribute a song HE interprets to the wrong composer, the Dude's a legend!!

  • my dad is best friends w/the fiddle player jason carter

  • can anyone play the banjo part?

  • i just like the way the banjo player says nashville cats

  • Yeah I do also. This was the first time I had ever heard him sing and he sounds like Del. Great band!

  • Sreve Earle DID NOT write this song!

  • correct, Nashville Cats first first appeared on a 1966 album from The Lovin' Spoonful. Steve Earle was born in 1955, so when the song was released he was 11 years old. Steve Earle's first album didn't come out until 1986 (twenty years later). If you watch the end of this video, Del talks about The Lovin' Spoonful writing the song.

  • Ain't nothing like a Southerner for hyperbole!

  • I believe F;att and Scruggs (of bluegrass fame) also recorded it...but nothing on the copy I have indicates who wrote it

  • Also, I'm wondering why the vid was removed that featured a Kama Sutra 45rpm of The Lovin' Spoonful performing Nashville Cats. I mean I have it on my shelf :D but I'm surprised the vid was removed.

  • Not according to Steve Earle's biography, and other internet sources. Now I'm curious.

  • It's funny how these notions get started... so many lyrics pages list Steve Earle as the songwriter for Nashville Cats. And interestingly, John Sebastian's name would not come up for anything on a search at ASCAP. So I'm curious when the song was written and by whom, and why the song doesn't come up on ASCAP.

  • Written by Sebastian. Take it to the bank.

  • As a side note. Steve Earle wrote Nashville Cats just as Aly & AJ wrote Do you Believe in Magic.

  • Wait! Steve Earle wrote this song, Del!!

  • "Nashville Cats" was written by John Sebastian from the album Hums Of The Lovin' Spoonful ©1966 Kama Sutra

  • sorry for not hitting reply first, see above post.

  • I searched ASCAP and the song did not come up for Steve Earle. However, it did not come up for John Sebastian either..Please let us know if you find out anything more concrete. Thanks. :D

  • Absolutely right.
