I too really like this version of this song. The Tommy Fleming version is so commercial it overtook my facebook posting. This version is pure and simple, and a testament to Mary Black in her interpretation of good music. Awesome. Peace be with you.
There are many great versions of this song, Mavis Staples maybe at top of the list, but this one may be her sternest competition. No coincidence I fear that it is the Irish and the descendants of Africans brought to this land in chains that feel it most deeply. Thanks for a great post, unavailable anywhere else.
"Did Tommy Fleming get that jacket from a yank tourist?? its brutal!!".. I'm a yank and the comment just falling from somewhere out of space hit me as funny as hell. LMAO! PS: The jacket is "brutal."
I remember seeing the "Gael Force" special when it aired as part of a PBS pledge drive (I believe in the late 1990s); this is my favorite song in the show. Thank you for posting.
I loved this version with all the verses! It was song in the film "Georgia" by Mare Winngham found @ Utube by typing Georgia "The Concert" it is great there too because it is such a beautiful folk tune! :)
@ TheCathyLeach -The Mare Winningham is nice (but she does a mistake in the movie S Foster 1859 the reality is 1854 during a great depression),t the Bob Dylan's version is famous too
Mary Black! What can i say,,,,,, she is good and then there`s Mr Tommy Flemming. BRILLIANT

Great version; the one by Alison Krauss, James Taylor, Mark O'Connor & Yo-yo Ma is another fave.

In fact, the whole ensemble is terrific! And let us not forget the man who wrote this, and so many more - Stephen Foster!
Thanks to the musicians, producers, and poster!
