@PineapplePwincess well she does modern and she's good at it, and this is what she's famous for her extravaganza! She's as good when it comes to traditional too!
@joliedupunk well her group doesn't participate in any Heivas or Fetes, only as judges. Her former group the Les Grands Ballets de Tahiti and Tumatas group Tahiti Ora are non competing groups, if I've understood it right! They only perform...They like to not be to bound to the ''traditional''. As Tumata once said: ''dancers should be free to express themselves the way they want'' whether it's modern or traditional.
wooow shes awesome..pretty much da best by far ive seen really..she has a group in LA? wea can i see em..i mite wan book em for future weddings. parties, etc
@Jenlove26 No she doesn't have a group in the US. She used to be the lead dancer for the famous Les Grands Ballets de Tahiti, but left with Tumata Robinson who created in her part Tahiti Ora in 2007/2008. In Tahiti it's normal not to belong to one certain group through life...
Most dancing is a fertility rite. The South Seas people have developed the most delightful versions. They used to dance with just grass skirts. Nothing under neigh and no tops. When the missionaries told them to cover up their breast. They lifted their skirts to do so. Ha. That's the story I was told.
I'm a long time dancer and when I first watched this video several months ago I was totally against the dancing but still mesmerized by it. For some reason I kept coming back to the video. I've since made up my mind that I was just against it because it was a type of dancing that I was not used to...very non-traditional. I have since added it as one of my favorite videos and have even tried to incorporate some of her steps into my solos. Mauruuruu for the video!!!
I do know my roots. I never said dancers who prefer modern style don't. i was merely stating an observation of how far off tahitian has evolved. it has def become more flashy instead of working on basics (roots) like core balance and precision in movements. if you're gonna do the flashy thing..make sure you make your movements precise otherwise it just looks sloppy. that's just my opinion. but you don't have to agree. just don't disrespect me in the process of disagreeing Gille87.
Congratulation, her name is Moeana, she was performing with the "Les Grands Ballets de Tahiti" now she is the leader of the group of Tumata Robinson.
I met her in 2001 in LA in Hollywood.
Please do NOT repeat that: She is One of a kind and One of the best female dancer in Tahiti. She is Fast and Furious...This is the new revolution kind of dance from Tahiti.
She danced it so beautifully, it seemed as though she WAS the dance. Her facial expression seemed naturally confident, mesmorizing and taunting. It seems even more exotic that she fa'arapu's clockwise.
Well ori has evolved alot, and Les Grands Ballet De Tahiti mix both traditional and modern steps into their dances. This dance group is one of the most famous ones, both in Tahiti, and outside, and it's really disrespectful and immature to be so full of ur self and that they don't know their roots just b'cuz they dance it in a way u don't like! It still does its purpose, telling a story! Is that ur roots? Being full of ur self, and immature? Well u most sure be proud of ur self=) Mauruuru
Although Cook islands have managed to remain more authentic (no as well as Samoas though) one cannot deny Tahiti was always and will away be the capital of dance. I find that Cook Islands dancers have no stamina and no creativity.
@arinamfonts i dance tahitian, but im an original cookisland dance.. because i am cookisland! its hard to compare the two dances! they're very different techniques! both beautiful and fast.....
@TheCecils6 I agree with you, my post was a retaliation to someone who commented that Tahitian dance was not authentic and too "French". My feeling is that static cultures become reduced to folklore whilst live cultures are always subject to some form of modernisation; it is the prerequisite to keep traditions alive and meaningful.
@PineapplePwincess well she does modern and she's good at it, and this is what she's famous for her extravaganza! She's as good when it comes to traditional too!

This is merely a dance for entertainment. I'm sure when she is in a Heiva or Fete she's is just as good in the the traditional way.
