Technology replaced the telegraph wires. Microwave communications, satellite tracking. Class A railroads are ctc (central traffic control), eliminating the need for train orders other than slow orders or mow restrictions. The number of dispatchers are a lot less.
Too bad the caboose is history. They say that the reason they were replaced with end of train devices, was to save money on having a third crew member on board the train.
@benschlechter The crew member was only part of it. They had a Cab supply man, had to supply the Cab with coal or oil for heating, we had ice, a broom, tools, etc. They had to maintain a fleet of Cabs, wheels, stoves, coolers, brake shoes , etc. The biggest reason was the injuries, if you have never rode on a Cab, it can be dangerous, slack in and out can knock you down. Dynamic Braking made it more dangerous than just train line brakes, a good old engineer could control slack with train line.
