Given the protection a full palte harness gives, it's not surprising. One of the most reliable ways to kill and opponent in plate was to wrestle him down and then stab a dagger through the weak points like joints or the eye-slit. The Stiletto was a common secondary weapon for knights exactly for that reason.
Hmm. Some of these techniques are a certain testament to the notion that the medieval warrior must have been physically frightfully strong, judging from the piledriver part. If they truly were widely capable of doing that to a grown man in full armor, then... well, I don't even want to imagine what they were like too closely.
@UnclePutte Actually, you don't have to be extremely fit to use these techniques, although it helps. What you need is the knowledge of the mechanics behind the techniques. A medieval swordsman would have been reasonably strong and well trained, but most were probably not in the same league as a UFC fighter. A suit of armour weighed between 17 and 25 kilos and a longsword about 1.4 to 1.8
A strike with a pommel would inflict a blunt trauma (i have a pretty light longsword and was amazed with power of such blow). Of course it's better to carry around a pike to pierce armor, a mace to crush armor in a line, a halberd to fight multiple attackers, a crossbow to get rid of weapon throws, a shield to defend more easily...but if you only have a one longsword, that's how you compensate for the lack of weapon loaded squire.
there is a technique with the sword called "mezza spada" when the sword It is used like a staff or axe to be more effective against heavy armour. The blade in normal use can´t perforate the steel, you now?
Yeah, it's called "half-swording" in English. Basically, armour plates are plain impervious to 99.999% of everything you could do to them with a sword, so instead you get up close and grab the blade with your off-hand to provide increased leverage and point control, and try to stick the point in through the visor slits and the mail-covered joints, groin and gaps BETWEEN the plates.
The reason they hold the sword like a staff is because this type of fighting was designed to be used against men in full harness (full plate). Turning your long sword into a prybar basically. You'd wrestle/club and try to knock you opponent down and then wrestle the tip into an exposed slot.
always the same: the victim doesnt act.... its so boring seeing hollywood acting all over again........ fuck those amateurs, a real fight is SO much different from what is shown here!!!!
wow, dont know how this can have happened, my comment was supposed to stand under another video, i actually like this one as both are acting quite fast! Pardon my mistake! (I shouldnt write while drunk, sorry!
You need to be motion captured for a videogame. Great recreation and citation of sources. I detest is when people jack Asian martial arts and claim they are Russian/Aztec/Australian or whatever. This however, is the real deal. Thanks for keeping authentic European martial arts alive and well.
The protective gear is a combination of reinforced fencing mask, custom gorget, football and hockey shoulder/chest protectors, hockey arm guards and gloves, padded hockey shorts (groin and thigh protection) and either baseball or hockey knee/shin guards. It's a good simulation of full steel harness.
It is made out of plastic and considerably lighter then even a good steel harness. Joints and visor work completely different. Even the amount of protection is much lower then that of a steel harness. In real harness, your body will move completely different. It's pointless to try Harnischfechten without a r e a l harness. Sorry.
If you'r smart you can get a working one to trust ur life to for 950EUR.
Your kit is good protection for competitive Blossfechten, though
PS Out of curiosity, what protective gear were you wearing? It looked very protective without compromising too much movement -- is this accurate (particularly for the arms and hands)?
This is a fantastic video! The chess-like move, counter, counter-to-the-counter, etc. is particularly illuminating. More than most youtube WMA videos (with a few exceptions), this really illustrates how sophisticated European martial arts are. Brilliant job!
It's middle german, and hard as hell to read because of the spelling. I understood it though, and it is literally and play by play instruction to what they are acting out. It's an illuminating read, actually. A lot of the instructions amount to "Hit him in the face" with little bits like "when he blocks, stab him in the throat" and so on. It's really cool.
@Meshelsidek It reads very much like some of the marial art's treatises from asia, actually. It is esentially a play by play list of moves, like a chess game. For example, the first bit instructs you to make a move, wherein he will too. You are to scrape off that pass (I think that means you are supposed to slide off of hist parry in this case), wherein you (having feinted at his face once to force said parry) you are to hit him in the face.
I never knew a knight is also a good wrestler.

question for the fighters: what kind of equipment are you using to simulate armor? It looks really good and effective!

That looks more like staffplay, not swordplay

That's how it's really done, though. No sense in not using all the parts of your weapon, you know?

Well, then better to carry military pick :) And i doubt that blunt guard could be used to penetrate armor...

After that, it gets kinda nasty. :D
