Lions and tigers will kill the smaller cats in their range to eliminate competition for food and threats to their young. They will even eat one another when prey is abnormally scarce. It is known that lions fight one another at meal time, but in one particular instance, during an extreme time of great difficulty, a nomadic male killed his female partner in battle over a carcass. He then resorted to feeding on her body instead. Even desperate humans have resorted to these survival techniques.
@nitroracerrc Im not sure if this is everywhere, but there are places in the Sabi Sands where the Lions killed in a territorial fight were eaten. This was mostly done by a coalition of 6 males known as The Mapogos ( who in some places were known as "The Canibals" ). But a new coalition known as The Majingilanes have come in, caught and killed one of The Mapogos and they ate him. So I've heard about this happening a few times in and around the area of Londolozi.
@nitroracerrc I've actually read that Tigers and leopards co-exist fairly well in places like India...for a few reasons. One, they are both generalists and feed on a whole range of prey so they don't exactly compete for one animal. Two, Tigers will scavenge off leopards sometimes, so, it's beneficial for them to let the leopards be. Finally, Leopards aren't dumb enough to fight Tigers, and Tigers aren't going to catch a leopard.....so basically, I don't see them fighting anyways.
i totally agree with you, except that the leopard isn't convincingly faster than the tiger, it's faster true but the tiger's greater stamina is better, the leopard would seek out trees as escapes, but say the tree is absent in the setting? the tiger would easily rein in the distance.
Leopards are actually a threat however to tiger cubs, but yeah i agree with you largely.
Infact there is a Video where Tigress kills and eats a Male Leopard - that was shot in Corbett national Park in 1990- the first video recording of such incident- of course tiger predation on leopard has been documented in India as well as Nepal - notably in Kanha,Bandipur-nagarhole,Royal Chitwan National Park - where instances such as these were noted- about a dozen of them - and its common where predator density is high and competition for prey is ffierce
how do you know the tiger wanted to eat the leopard? maybe he just wanted to "get some," you know, as in jungle fever. after all, the video didn't actually show the tiger eating the leopard. plus, ligers and tigons have been created so why not leogers or tigards? :p
lions and tigers will kill any rival predators they can but very rarely eat them.like its been said, its about eliminating competion not getting a meal.
Big cats DO kill each other occasionally, but I've never heard of them actually EATING each other. Maybe they would, in desperate times, but not normally.
rarely do big cats kill and eat other big cats, if they do it, its normally a limb or something and its to show a sign of dominance, this is also true for intraspecies aswell as interspecies i believe.
