  • remember watching them all in the mid 80s,Toivenans Ari vattanen,Tony Pond,Jimmy Mcrae,Peaugeot 205 won it in 85

  • The BBC always nailed it with theme tunes.

  • Jewelled British rally

  • Remember the Lombard RAC rally on tv,think the 1st round was usually around the grounds of a stately home. Thanks for great track, haven't heard it for years, brings back the memories. All the best to you

  • this song was also used for the channel 7 telecasts of the atcc and wtcc events in the 80's so listening to this song just puts me back in the moment

  • Brill! Just turned 39 and reminiscing lots. Watched this all the time, still got some on VHS(!) somewhere. Cracking!

  • Also takes me back to granstand 80's as it was used for the intro for the Great race -BATHURST 1000.

  • If this song doesn't make you want to get in a car and drive it across some dirt track at 130 mph thinking you are Colin McRae I dont know what will!!! Quality!!!

  • @asha11ish My thoughts exactly !!

  • Thankyou for posting this, i remeber hearing this and watching the Lombard with awe, the sound and the image of those cars made my hair stand on end, regards.

  • Is it me or does the MK2 Escort look a lot cooler than some of the more modern cars in this compilation?

Only 40+ year olds would probably agree!

  • @caxtonman , Totally agree !!

  • I always considered the original 12 inch mix perfect driving music.

My ambition stills remains to take a 1980s BMW 635CSI and totally floor the pedal along the Bonn-Cologne autobahn in the rain.

  • great to hear this again, ralling at its best

  • Ahh, Happy days, to be standing in Kielder watching Lancias...

  • Ahh, Happy days, to be standing in Kielder watching Lancias...

  • I've spent 23 years trying to find the name of this song and the artist! It was also used in Australia for speedway ads. Thank you for giving me closure on this mystery! It's still a great song after all this time.

  • Thanks again all for the comments............

  • @thetailsgoin thank you, proper train spotting to get the right remix !

  • Thanks for posting this....i never knew what it was and only heard the original tonight while in the bath...it took me back to my childhood and watching the rally report. shazam got me the name and you provided the solution...top marks

  • @Daygobarsystems Cheers, took me a while to track it down back in the late 80's/early 90's (missed the original 'Duel' in the charts in '85), easy now with the glorious internet! With the likes of Youtube, Google & Ebay, can trace anything! A great song, just bang on for rallying. A video version is at 'British Rally 1986 Jewelled', so much better with motion & intermittent engine soundtrack!

  • At last!!!! i have been looking every where for this. Onto my playlist this goes :)

  • Excellent memories. When Real Cars had RWD.

Escort 1 + 2 Havens of Oversteer, "Lords of the Loose" [even with pushrods]. Certainly has me driving quicker.

    Outstanding post.!!

  • Top tip. Get this playing in the car and go for a drive. You end up driving quicker !!

  • Brilliant, well done, I always enjoy watching this. Any sign of an actual video version in the pipeline..?

  • @tashiusclay Apologies for the late reply, better late than never! You might have seen it by now, but video version at 'British Rally 1986 Jewelled'

He's done a good job & its alot better with a motion/sound vid! Cheers!

  • Wot no Talbot Sunbeam?................good stuff enjoyed it

  • @sojace Hi sojace, check out my other vid with no repeated pics, think theres just the one 'beam on it, but its a cracker! Cheers for comment tho!

  • Wheres the Lancia Stratos?

  • What no Lancia stratos??? The best looking Purpose built rally car ever...What were you smoking at the time???

  • The music reminds me of an engine accelerating and exhaust noises. It get's you in the mood for rallying.

  • after having this tune in my head for years, well since it used to be the lombard rally!!! totally agree with the boxing quote its a tune to fire you up!!!!

  • it reminds of the days when the BBC used to cover the rally really well and have poor Tony Mason freezing his arse off shoving a mic into someones face. - good days for the motorsport of rallying.

  • Ahhhhh man, you have missed the most important rally car ever in these pics........the legendary quattro

  • Its ok, take a peek at the other stills vid I've got with same tune.........theres a couple on there I think.....few others aswell missed out on this vid. Cheers!

  • how creepily uncanny the slide show which accompanies this gem!

  • I've been hunting high and low for this - thank you so much for downloading this!!

  • have been looking for this for ages, couldnt remember the name of the band or song title.a friend had it on cassette during the eighties, fantastic.

  • This is an amazing re-mix....I liked it...It suits the Rally..Nice job...

  • thanks you for this track

    I luv propaganda

  • anybody know which rally the image at 0:30 to 0:34 is from? class video...

  • Many thanks all for the comments.....

To answer your question jj, its the Rally of Germany 2002, Petter Solberg as you probably know. A great pic...

Have another stills video on with different & unreapeated images if you look at my other vids.....Thanks again folks!.....

  • cheers for the reply.....i looked on wrc-rally org and couldnt find the image - dont suppose u have it do you??? thanks again buddy

  • Brilliant song and images, top marks to tthyailsgoin.

  • sorry, spelt your name wrong.

  • When I first heard this as the BBC rally theme tune it took me an age to find out who it was (no internet back then) once I had found out, bought the album.

    Sheer brilliance.

  • Ha Kresnov, I was exactly the same, heard it on the rallying, then in the late 80's, early 90's, Radio 1 used the start of the bitter sweet remix version at the beginning of their Newsbeat slot. Took me an age to discover who/what it was. A belter of a tune/song in all its guises. A piece of cake now-a-days to find something out on the good ol' World Wide Web! Keep surfin! Cheers!

  • Exactly the same here TOO! It took me years to hunt this down. Managed to about five years ago. If I was a boxer I'd come into the ring with the opening to this. It really fires me up!

  • oops just read all posts and realised someone already posted this sorry

  • No probs, all song info at top right hand corner of page...............

  • this song is by propaganda, they took duel and this version was called jewelled.

  • any cover of this song done well is awsome, and this is, where did you get it, anyway well done i cant stop listenin to it

  • this isn't a cover, its by the original band :s

  • i meant a different version sorry

  • 7:23 - 7:35 - love it, so typically 80's :)

  • Super geiles Remix.Geil!!!

  • And a slightly edited/remixed version was used by Alias / Silicon Graphics for the Alias / SGI Customer Demo Reel 93/94. Still have it on VHS.

  • Tunes used by the BBC for the titles of their motor sports programmes are always red hot - (old) Top Gear (Allman Brothers - Brother & Sisters), Grand Prix (Fleetwood Mac - The Chain) and this for RAC Rally report! Did I miss any out?

  • You can add "Hysteria" by Muse to the list - that's BBC's Moto GP theme. Other than that you're pretty much spot on except Top Gear is "Jessica" by the Allman Brothers, not "Brother & Sisters"

Useless trivia. This is the only one of the 3 which has not been re-mixed by the BBC over the years, and is the only one not in use in any shape or form now.

  • Yes you are right - the track 'Jessica' is on the album 'Brothers & Sisters' by the Allman brothers!

  • Oops! Didn't know that! Sorry.

  • New stills vid now on.....

  • remember this on the opening titles of top gear rally report in 1990! and yes it does make whatever car youre in go faster,i have it on my mp3 player and you drive like the devil with this on! at 153 you just want to go faster....

  • Agree with all the positive comments - this is a fantastic mix and was great for the rallying. However, I'm sure I first heard this track as part of Channel 4's NFL results show hosted by the brilliant Mick Luckhurst around 1988/89. Does anybody remember this?

  • You know, that's going back a long time but it's ringing a very big bell. I think they might have used 'Duel'. I thought Mick Luckhurst was brilliant too :)

  • Yep, You're right. I have a VHS copy of Super Bowl XXIII that was screened by C4 and this was used as the title music.

  • Fantastic track, love it! Propaganda were fantastic in the eighties and this track 'Duel' is the best !!!!

  • Look forward to the new one though. If it's half as good as this..

  • Thanks all for the comments!

Will add a new stills vid shortly to show other manufacturers not included here, so there are'nt any repeated pics.....then delete this one.....stay tuned

Magic track, goes perfect with the rallying.....

Spot on choice by who ever it was to pick it for the Beeb! Cheers!

  • Cheers! I love this one, keep watching it! Could you possibly keep both versions up?

Yeah it's almost as if the composer had rallying in mind. This makes me feel I am there.

  • Thanks for hosting this, will be seeking it out from Amazon.

  • Over fifteen years ive been after this very track.

THANKYOU SO MUCH for posting it on here, its a fantastic version!

I remember the RAC Rally with fond memories.

    FANTASTIC!!

  • the tracks jewelled and its on the album' wishful thinking'-total classic!!!

  • Yes this song makes the car go faster!!

  • the good old rally days..dont see hardly any on tv these days. pity they didnt keep it on bbc

  • Haven't heard this song in literally years and was never able to find out who did it. I only remember it from the intro sequence to the World Rally Championships and it suited it so well. Even though this video is a collection of stills, I can still remember the montage of cars hurtling through wooded tracks and cart-wheeling over ravines.

    Great stuff!

  • Love this tune. Did they put the engine grunt in just for the BBC?

  • @wrcfreak2121 I don't think so - the album version of this on Spotify has it in too.

thetailsgoin - many thanks for posting this, it really takes me back to watching the RAC Rally reports when I was a lot younger. Been trying ever since to find out what this track was called!

  • @daveoftheraceways Don't thank me Dave, ha, thank whoever chose it for the rallying at the BBC (I'd like to shake them by the hand!) & ofcourse, Propaganda & Co (names in description above, the re-mixers did a great job to an already great song).......

But yeah, 20 years ago or so, with the internet still thought upon as a fishing accessory, eventually found it, but alot easier now-a-days with sites like this.....

    3 cheers for the 'tube!!!

But thanks all for the comments, appreciated!

  • Thanks for posting..This tune should of been kept when ITV took over the rally report from the BBC,butno shots of Toyota celicas,Lanica Integrate,or the leagend of group "B" rally cars

  • great pics, great music! Nice compilation...

  • Fantastic, thanks for posting! I have been looking for this, the very best version of Duel for years! Have now purchased it via i-tunes..thanks for the info, maybe apple should pay you commission! Enjoyed the video btw..

  • 'Jewel' not 'Duel' both songs are on album 'Secret Wish', based on same song, but produced differently.

  • Actually it's jewelled, a mix of jewel and duel done especially for the bbc as they requested it for their rally report.

    It's on itunes also

  • I stand corrected! never realised it was a special mix when I watched the rally report all those years ago. Ta

  • Good work! Funny how one song with several different versions caused so much debate! I personally like this version best.

  • Thanks for the info on where you got the song, have just bought it from Amazon. If you would like to do an F1 montage with the Chain that would be cool too. May thanks again.

  • Brilliant song, brilliant montage. Any chance of dropping some of the repeated shots in favour of Audi Quattros, Lancia Stratos, RS200's and MG 6R4's? Nevertheless, absolutely brilliant! Well done.

  • YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SOMEONE PUT IT ON YOUTUBE!!! please make a MP3 version and send to me!!! i must have this!!! lol

Brilliant song, reminds me of rally and the good old bathurst intros of the 80's........ yeah i was born in 1991 but old videos do the trick haha. =]

  • Bring this Theme BACK its so good i wonder if the BBC will use Fleetwood Mac's Chain when the show F1 next year, that would be cool, all we would need then is James Hunt to come back from the Dead and we could have real racing again.

  • fantastic!

  • Yes this is it the proper rally theme music!

It brings back school boy memories of watching a proper British Rally rather then the lame version we have now!

I remember how angry the year the BBC replaced this with the F1 music when they lost the rights to that.

    Thanks buddy!

  • I know, video not great, but objective was to get the tune on since full length version was'nt listed. GREAT choice of tune by the person who chose this for the Beeb's Rally Report theme, where I first heard it many moons ago! You know who you are!!!
