Mr Ayers is no longer an active radical. They simply worked together on charity board (as have several other people) funded by a man named Annenburg, an ambassador and friend of Ronald Reagan, and Ayers hosted a thingy for Obama. I think the move made by repubs to bring up Gwen Ifill was actually an attempt to buy the refs. By that I mean there would be more scrutiny placed on Gwen's questions rather than on Palin's responses by republicans therefore possibly altering or softening the debate questions/follow-ups etc. It's not what the main hand is doing that you have to watch...it's the one your attention is drawn away from that you keep an eye on. Ifill should have recused herself from the debate. In fact, there are plenty of people that feel Ifill was too soft on Palin precisely because she didn't want to be accused of being biased (because of the book).
Reps were afraid Ifill (being pro-Obama) would be overly tough on Palin. How ironic that the opposite may have happened.

In the UK and in Aus (I am an Australian), Fox is known to not be a believable source for anything, amongst those who take any interest in international affairs and have critical minds. You only stand in horror of what is actually on Fox, if you believe anyone could believe the drivel that is on it. Those who do believe the mush that is Fox would not know balanced reporting if it bit them in the proverbial.

agre: I've lived in this country for 50 years and have watched it all extensively. Fox leans to the Right....but you have to understand that ALL the rest of our media outlets (CNN, PBS, CBS, ABC, NBC, MSNBC) lean to the Left. And I can assure you, I get information (not opinions) from Fox that the other outlets simply don't carry.
Some of the tactics of people like Hannity/O'Reilly are outrageous, but it doesn't mean they're wrong.

It is scary that even though you know Fox uses outrageous tactics, you still trust them enough to accept what they tell you as information.
Sort of like accepting Joseph Goebbels as a source of information because, even though he may have been an evil bastard from hell, he sometimes used facts in his nazi propaganda.
Telling only selected facts is one of the most devious ways to influence people.

I watch MSNBC, PBS, CNN, and Fox. The first three are lockstep to the Left. Fox gives a different perspective. And no matter how rude/biased O'Reilly/Hannity may be, it doesn't mean they're always wrong.
I think Lehrer is very biased. Does that mean I should NEVER listen to him?

I have learned that you can never trust a liar, even if you occasionally catch him telling the truth.
Fox doesn't even try to be unbiased, but it pretends to be fair and balanced. You could say that Fox News is a compulsive liar.
I never see CNN's anchors and hosts shouting or calling guests cowards or traitors. That fact should tell you something.

mmor: Again...if someone is rude/biased it doesn't necessarily mean they're wrong. It just means you have to take these factors into account when listening to them.
Olbermann is rude and biased too; the worst name-caller out there. Mathews, Mithcell, Brokaw, Lehrer, etc. are not rude...just biased, and in a sense they're the most dangerous because they create a more believable fantasy of impartiality.
And lets be clear. There's a HUGE difference between lying and being biased.

A lie is a deliberate misstatement of fact. Fox's claim to be "fair and balanced" doesn't mean every person who ever appears on the network is completely unbiased...or even that they tell the truth 100% of the time. Your argument is absurd.
Now...give me three examples of "lies" by O'Reilly and/or Hannity. Not exaggerations; LIES!

The right is always wining about the "liberal media" to the point that the general public has accepted it to be true, even though the evidence is to the contrary.
A study done by FAIR, 1993 "casts considerable doubt on conservative claims concerning the liberal bias of public television programming,"

I'll concede that reporters are generally to the left of the general public on social issues. Professionals in general often have "liberal" leanings on social issues. However, according to the study I read, journalists identify with the "right" when it comes to economic issues.
I guess in the end it is relative. If you are to the right of center, you percieve the media to be biased to the left. If you are to the left, you percieve the mainstream media to be to the right.

coli: OK. I think we're in general agreement. And of course, being human, everyone will have a bias. The point is that journalists must be held to the highest standards of impartiality and should be trained specifically to eliminate their bias (to the best of their ability).
The other option is for talking heads to clearly support a specific candidate. That's OK too since we'll know where they stand. What's not OK is claiming to be impartial...and then being biased.

Why would Vanity Fair have anything to do with this their writers aren't moderating the debate so who cares if they look to make a profit from it. I don't really think it matters that she's writing the book since all she's there to do is ask questions that the candidates aren't going to answer anyway. Fox news reporting on the book will probably help book sales more than the election anyway how many people new about the book before the reported on it?

rupert murdoch isn't a writer for vanity fair. he owns a huge chunk of media that includes the fox network. i knew gwen ifill was writing a book before -- but then again i am overly literate -- as is rush limbaugh who broke the story and fox picked up on it. i am assuming rush was using his own "gotcha journalism" as he is famous for it. not so much katie couric. as a small aside ms ifill also monitored the vp debate in 2004.

rupert murdoch is a very big propagandist in american politics -- get to know him. i should point out to the radical right that follow his spin that he isn't even american -- hes australian. the quote in vanity fair isn't as biased against the cons as it might sound -- he backs barack obama because he will sell more papers. when the day is done all he is interested in how much money is in his pocket. nationalist pro-american rhetoric on fox is to put money in an aussies pocket. go team fox.

I like how the Liberal Viewer goes after fox.
CNN, NBC, and mostly all the other media networks are liberal as hell. The media that lies all the time and favors the democrats on everything. The liberal news that interviewed Bush and then took and rearranged his words. Not that I like bush but thats bull. How about getting the prison guard at Mccains POW camp and making it sound like that mccain wasn't really beaten up at all and it was just a big party. Liberal news is more corrupt than fox
