I heard on VH-1 a while back that GFR stole the show from Zeppelin one time and Zep's manager Peter Grant grabbed GF'S manager by the throat backstage..Something like that..
@mrgb46 That is a fact. It did happen. Peter Grant was very intimidating and Led Zeppelin refused to take the stage that night. Don't know if he grabbed him by the throat part though.
Saw Grand Funk , The James Gang, Steve Miller, and Paul Butterfield (? I think) the summer of 69 or 70. It was a free outdoor concert in Cincinnati and was the best concert I have been to. The radio was sponsoring it and really promoting The James Gang with their new release. We went crazy over Grand Funk and they finally had to be pulled. James Gang was great, but we wanted more of Grand Funk!!!
Excellent live video and sound. Alexbhbr, you've obviously have take some to put this up with this audio and video. One of the very best I've seen and heard on youtube for being live. In fact, right now I put it at no.1 For GFR postings.
I saw them 3 times back in the day. Not even one close to being nothing other than fantastic. Last time Mark had this guitar, and I thought it was chrome plated because when the spot light reflected off it, made it even surreal. I think there was a concert that Led "which I love" refused to go on after them after seeing them play and the crowds response to them. They did not have the technology they have today to make most bands sound like they did today. GFR , obviously, over came that here.
@nofortunatesonII ya & Don Brewer is still an unrerated drumer my band used to open with WE"RE AN AMERICAN BAND (sorry the song deserves capitalizeing)& then Black Licorice.
@joetoronto I stand corrected I called my old bandmate in birmingham & it ws 74 whn they opened 4 GF cs GF had there keyboard player .We wanted to her the american band album live cs we wre doing so many songs off of it.(& ya i remember Burton Cummings Stand Tall was killer hahahahahahahahaha!)
If a Time Machine is ever invented, I wanna come back to THAT night to THAT concert in the FRONT ROW. omg!!!! I have to look up Farner's new band.....
Probably one of THE most underated (by the so-called critics) bands of the early 70s. However those of us who appreciated what we were hearing and seeing are the BEST critics ever. God Bless all. Peace!
And just imagine peaking in the middle of this song at one of their concerts......if reincarnation is true, I hope I come back as me once more and the 70's start all over again.
You young folk have to realize this was the attire back in the day. If you don't like the clothes turn off the screen and just listen. You young cousins need to lay of the Special K and the Meth and live like us older cousins.
With the body he had and still has to this day, Farner doesn't need any clothes, I'm sure all the female fans will agree. He is the best rocker of all time. Maybe the drummer, could have dressed differently but he is so damned talented...who cares?

And to think I saw them live a couple of times '69-'71.I went with my boyfriend; if I could turn back time I would have jumped the stage and attacked him! Mark was the most beautiful, desirable man I had ever seen.
Bekki54: Mark was hot hot hot for days!!!! I look at him now and wish I'd paid more attention when I saw him live. A concert was not a concert back ITGOD (in the good old days) unless good medication was involved so half the time I was sooooo hammered but I wouldn't trade the '60s/70s for anything. I just remember there was one special member on stage that made me cream in my jeans although I was in a foggy state. Oh, to be as clear as I am now and to able to see him the way he looked then.
Wow i cant believe this was in 74' i was born 10 years later. I saw them twice in concert at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles with my dad. They were great. I love GFR. This is my favorite song id have to say. I think they dont have the recognition that they deserve but all i have to say is that they are great. Long live Grand Funk Railroad.

Saw this band several times in my town hall in UK in the very early 70's, this must be where I started my love for the music of Rush, on this performance GFR are comparable on every level, thanks for the video.
I remember playing this song in the late early 70s in my garage band. This was always the greatest song to jam to. What great music. Thanks for the memories. P.S. Was Mark the first person to use the strat right strat neck with the left strat body design. I thought it was Eddie VanHanlen.
FUCKIN' TITS!....Mark was on TOP of his game at this point....The Syncronization between mark, Don, and mel is Amazing! Definately MY favorite GFR tune! They'll NEVER play like that again!...GREAT footage...Thanks for the Post!
Mark Farner is the steam, Don Brewer the pistons, Mel the wheels - one big fat funky unstoppable locomotive. I love how the rock press tried to stop them back then, but audiences said otherwise.
Watching this perfection of a live performance and I have to ask myself why is Don Brewer never mentioned in the same breath as Jon Bonham, Keith Moon, and Neil Peart? There is no justice in the world after all.
This is the second GFR song I ever heard at age 13, played live by a local band at a lakeside recreation hall. I didn't know it was a GF tune until some time later. I just remember being blown away as I'd never heard anything like it.
And Jimmy Page on guitar and Bonham on drums....simply put..they were/are masters...wish these comments were allowed to be longer. Hard to tell when your limited..change it UTUBE.
The energy these guys generated. You could start a hurricane or a raging forest fire. Led Zep is pretty tame compared to them. I remember during this time radio stations would do battle of the bands. These guys won every time. Why no Hall of Fame ??
Grand Funk were a monster band in history of rock and roll and they deserved to be in Hall of Fame of course but a comparison with Led Zeppelin..... no way.....
I was wondering the same thing. Musta been custom made or something. His old one was an odd brand too. Musta had something against against Fender & Gibson.
Mark Don and Mel...come back to us just one more time.. phil knight built a brand new stadium in eugene, oregon ..just for you~~~come on guys..younger generation don't know who you are.........i will never forget///thanks Utube for the videos, all my "tracks"lol,,,are dead/

MARK FARNER..BRILLANTE

Then again, GFR had 2 #1 songs...We're an American Band and the platinum selling Locomotion...#1 for 4 weeks. On the album side it was Zeppelin.

GFR was my favorite group as a kid. I give a nod to Zeppelin as slightly better....love em both

The energy these guys generated. You could start a hurricane or a raging forest fire. Led Zep is pretty tame compared to them. I remember during this time radio stations would do battle of the bands. These guys won every time. Why no Hall of Fame ??

Grand Funk were a monster band in history of rock and roll and they deserved to be in Hall of Fame of course but a comparison with Led Zeppelin..... no way.....

I was checkin' out the headstock on that guitar...what make and model is THAT? These guys taught Zep how to tour America...
Mark Farner, one bad ass, guitar playing/singing frontman! Awesome video.

I was wondering the same thing. Musta been custom made or something. His old one was an odd brand too. Musta had something against against Fender & Gibson.
