  • "The operating system(osx) is very very open source..." BULLSHIT

  • @deathcry a lot of it is available on apple's website bit.ly /HV8vM

  • @SamueltehG33k

But not Aqua or cocoa, which is really the feature that make OSX what it is. Without those it might as well be another *BSD distro.

  • @SamueltehG33k that code is unrealable, why dont you think they're isnt a forked project?

  • for me, windows it the OS that makes me want to take bill gates and throw him of the edge of the world, Mac is amazing and smooth, BSD is good, Linux is great

  • @brandon35335 I agree in large. I am on linux, have still to try BSD and Mac, but linux rules. Now if we could just get PCs not infected with windows I would be perfectly satisfied.

  • freeBSD is supposed to be based on Mac OSX right?

  • @truesivad OpenDarwin BSD is the base of OSX. However Apple bought the project so now you can't really DL a iso for OpenDarwin;. You have to go through hoops fetching individual files and lines of code in order to build you own OpenDarwin ISO. (Apples way of sticking it to the GPL)

You can DL PureDarwin, Although the project has been stagnant for a few years now.

  • windows... SUCKS

  • I think one of the major issues with use of these operating systems is that computers were never really intended to be used for personal use, with the internet that all changed.

Pro and cons of OS, based purely on how well it works for desktop users is highly inaccurate. BTW OSX's OS has its roots with BSD.

I personally think that any person should learn how to use an operating system. Most of the problems for desktop users are human error because of lack of knowledge.

  • Linux FTW. In general, I like Microsoft, but in Vista, they fucked up.

  • Why do people call it "Linux" when it's more GNU than anything? :P

  • @Bayonetta4 Your grammar sucks.

  • I don't aggree with you. I think you dont have to know any basics of UNIX to run a UNIX-like operating system. Look, I'm 16 y/o, I run Linux like half a year ago, and just removed my windows installation, cuz I didn't boot on it since i got my Linux. With my age I barely know shit about open source, and unix, and linux and stuff, but I've learned theese things so far.

  • What bothers me in Linux is it varying hardware support, when you build a new PC you can be pretty sure there is a Windows driver for every new component, with Linux some drivers are utter garbage because hardware makers do not take good care of their Linux-drivers.

Some of the Linux-software is also not as polished and user friendly as commercial software is that are usually available only for Windows ja Mac operating systems, like Pro Tools, haven't found a good alternative yet.

  • You call yourself a geek but then you use linux xD go back the elementary school fucktard

  • Yeah, same as those n00bz at google, don't know what the hell they're doing.

  • Is this a joke

  • They all serve their purpose, and are compatible with each other. Just customize to a specialty. BSD rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just ask Mac OSX that is based on a version of BSD they christianed DARWIN

  • PC-BSD = Desktop and server administration who like the gui preinstalled and push button installation method. It is FreeBSD %100 + noob friendly.

FreeBSD = for cli server administration pros, unless you want to install gui your self. What is the point, might as well install PC-BSD.

    OpenBSD = specialized for security

NetBSD= for any hardware, even your microwave.

  • @cilo56 The point of FreeBSD is good to use if you don't want to have all of that extra stuff out of the box. FreeBSD can do anything that PC-BSD can and vice-versa, they are basically the same OS. I prefer FreeBSD over PC-BSD, because i like setting up my system from scratch

  • fuck freebsd

  • Windows does indeed suck for networking. At least as a server. Windows is OK as a client, but my print and file servers have all been Ubuntu for 2-3 years now.

  • a little ranty towards the end, but with good reason. great video but you lost some professionalism through the well deserved dogging of windows. its not THAT bad, seeing as how most people are casual users. 5 stars!

  • windows is like a toy os

  • I second that

  • DEVELOPERS!

  • +1 thumb rating for hilarious reference to steve ballmer (assumin thats who you are referencing)

  • LOL Thumbs up to Dexter17

  • I agree with you. Without 3rd party developers windows would be nothing. I have Ubuntu linux and am happy with it.

  • Comment removed

  • Where's the Audio?

  • .........

i only have this remark for that comment...

    DAT ASS!

  • Care to translate? If you are calling me an ass then at least try to qualify it. Dont join the already bulging ranks of idiot on YouTube who just use this service to play 'Internet Warrior' and abuse people. If I have that wrong then I apologise.

  • Apoligy accepted man.I was just VERY bored.

  • -'being a "geek" as i am.. is a pain in the ass...'

    jajajajajajaja

I like your objective comments, but your personal ones.. man, you are a very 'special' dude.. know that?

  • mmmh...

    pkg_add gnome (as an example)

done... what's you're problem with that?

  • pretty good video, at least in my opinion. i have used different flavors of the mentioned OS-s and I pretty much agree with most of the stuff being said. (the sleep function in mac os x for instance is better integrated with tiger. leopard is not ripe/usable yet - too many bugs, too big and bloated etc. stick with tiger for now, and with xp pro / server 2k3, if you REALLY need to use winblows)

  • Question; when you refer to "casual" users, could you be a bit more specific? A freind of mine has a couple of programs on there. MSN, firefox and a game or two. He has few problems. What more stuff would you be using that shows up the flaws more than what said casual user would be doing?

  • A good way to see the difference between the OS's is to look at the developers.

    BSD - young, smart nerds

    GNU/Linux - nerds in general

    Solaris - corporate nerds

Apple - nerds who get girls

    MS - THUGS!!

really. BG (& co) is a thug with glasses, not a nerd.

  • BSD - People who like freedom

    GNU/Linux - People who like "freedom"(read GPL)

    Solaris - corporate trash

    Apple - THUGS!!

    MS - THUGS!!

  • Mourningleaves it's Geeks not nerds!

  • Yeah, you're right. My bad. English is not my native language. In my language the terms are used interchangeably.

I might be wrong about the developers of the other OS's, but the interviews I've seen with MS developers give me the impression that they are bullies.

And MS's strategy has always been exploiting the people who don't know better.

Apple's have been exploiting those who THINK they know better. Sneaky...

  • @mourningleaves

    i see it this way

    BSD- Hardcore Hackers

GNU/LINUX- For people that are tired of the same shit.

Solaris - for Science and IT people

Apple- for artist and workshippers of steve jobs.

Microsoft- Is for breainwashed zombies that

    follows the commands of MS.

  • @elchippe brainwashed

  • @mourningleaves jajajajaja XD

  • Somebody has to go out and say this: NERD. (I'm a nerd myself, but jeez... You kick my ass in nerddom. Writer first, nerd second, for me I guess. >_>)

  • im not that much of a nerd there are peeps a lot smarter than i am im just a bit above average more of a geek :P

  • @SamueltehG33k nerds are better than geeks, because today, thanks to d-bag magazines like (fake) "iLove *insert d-bag band name here* Band And Listen To It 24/7," a geek is just somebody who open and listens to music on iTunes. (example: Chris Pirillo (He doesn't even know how to program!)), and a nerd actually does do something geeky like installing FreeBSD on a partition, yet preserving the Windows bootloader, but later replace NTLDR with GLDR.

  • I have had lots of problems on windows and it ran slow on my computer.

Ubuntu runs faster and has no to little problems.

    Great Video

  • Another great video Sam! I agree with most of your opinions, however, personally, I thought Windows USED to be good, but ever sinc Steve Ballmer became CEO of Microsoft, it's been going down the shitter. Vista is fucking horrible, it's slow as fuck due to it's horrible security and there's way too many fucking bugs and it's completely fucking

horrible, even with Service Pack 1 it still fucking sucks. At least Bill Gates improved 95, 98, NT, XP and 2000 over time after release.

  • Mark my words, Windows is starting to fucking suck, i'm sticking with XP and if Micro$oft decides to end support for it, I'm switching to Macintosh.

  • Since when did you tried out PC-BSD?? Well done!! Did you record a video on that?

  • I miss Win98, it had its flaws but at least I knew how to work around them. With Vistas problems, I have no fucking idea.

  • I agree with u...I have vista ultimate on my laptop, I'm somewhere between a geek and a casual user. I actually like XP, its better than vista...what makes vista even crappier is its cost...Vista ultimate $400 compared to $129 of OSX and Linux which is free...it should be twice as better than all of them for that price...

  • You didn't like freeBSD because you had to install X and whatever desktop environment you wanted? I'm going to have to ask you to turn in your geek card. If you don't like that PC-BSD uses KDE, then swap it out for XFCE or something. It isn't much (or any really) different than doing the same in Linux.

Also, Linux is UNIX-like so the two have a lot in common. You should be able to jump straight into a terminal without any worries.

  • thanks bro :D that made it a lot easier and BTW GNU and UNIX are very different its only freeBSD thats more GNU like use OpenBSD or DragonflyBSD you'll see what i mean

  • What is "GNU like"? Do you mean *PC-BSD* is more like a Linux distribution because it has GUI-goodness all prepackaged? A base install of FreeBSD doesn't have much more than your typical Unix utilities. GNU is a philosophy and a bunch of Unix-like tool clones anyway, not an OS.

  • !omg you dumbtard! Steam doesn't work on Linux becouse it's not made for Linux !figures! It doesn't even have an API for the Linux gui!

  • @crammage um u CAN run steam... i got ir running on WINE perfectly fine

  • I agree with everything you've said. Seriously. Microsoft are bitches.

  • Microsoft is still doing good.

  • I have vista premium and it de-frags itself. But on other points you are completely right. NETWORKING FUCKING SUCKS ON WINDOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE HAD SO MANY FUCKING PROBLEMS! AND I HAVE TO INSTALL SO MANY THINGS THAT TAKE UP SPACE JUST TO DO NORMAL THINGS ON IT! While vista is the most supported os when it comes to gaming, IT STILL FUCKING SUCKS! INSTALLING A GAME IS A HARROWING PROCESS! i GO THROUGH SO MANY ISSUES. CAN SOMEONE SHOW ME A OS AS PRETTY, BUT EASYTO GAME ON

  • hmmm homebasic doesnt

  • I guess its an added feature that comes with home premium. I wonder what professional gets compared to home premium?

  • yeah home premium and ultimate do homebasic and enterprise dont

  • vistas alright hmm i dont have problems w/ it ive installed hardware n well never had blue screen of death or anything that sorts thats weird dont have home basic but do have home premium but i do agree bout the updates that ur saing fuckn slow as hell n they should update every couple of months i was thinkn gettin ubuntu just to see how it really worx probably flawlessy

  • hey, you can back up with time machine to a usb on a wireless router or a shared computer , i have done it before

just google time machine over lan.

  • on OSX? how

  • google itimemachine first link ;)

  • That didn't work until Apple released an update to Leopard later on.

  • HAHA! "Everything works"!- Linux LOOOL! User friendly? LOOL!

OK! I've installed Ubuntu and it doesn't recognize my modem! Also how the hell I get info about my system specs without using terminal?

BTW: The start menu in linux is a joke!

It can't play wmv, avi, mp3 out-of-the-box! -Where is the user friendliness?

You're not a geek, more likely an idiot!

  • applications>>add/remove programs>> search restricted essentials and install them all your video types including ones such as divx and xvid(not out of the box in windows.) are installed and working.

your modem not working is probably cuz your using DHCP automatic configuration on it or your not using it depends on your sevice provider.

might i add that if your not willing to at least try to fix your problems(ubuntu forums?) then don't use Linux cuz in all honesty you don't really want to.

  • applications>>system>>add/remove programs.

    woops.

also hope this has helped you if you are actualy going to try useing linux if not srry.

and everything DOES WORK you just might have to ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING to get it to such as TRY.

  • Dude, your a fucktard. go away troll.

  • The fact that you referred to some menu as "The start menu in linux" shows that you really didn't put in any effort.

It's a totally different OS. If you go in looking for the start button and clicking and clacking around with no care of how to do things, naturally you are going to be disappointed.

  • yeah i agree with everything except with xubuntu compiz was easy to get working what was the problem you had?

  • i hate windows =[

the only reason i have it is because my dad dosent like any of the other operating systems and he dosent even use this pc =[

  • Interesting. I think the biggest problem I've ever had with Windows XP, was the fact that the graphics card drivers had to be updated manualy.

I'm a WoW player, and I used to get HUGE graphical bugs and screen tares, which would often result in the blue screen of death. However once I updated my graphics card drivers, the problem went away.

Would the other OS you talk about do this kind of thing automaticaly>

  • Over a year I had to reformat my windows XP 3 times due to viruses.

My mum has Vista. Takes about 8 minutes to boot and become usable. If you don't wait a few minutes once you've logged in, the computer freezes. She's had to send that computer back to the company twice in 2 months.

I got my eee PC and installed Ubuntu-EEE

Didn't have any trouble, and so far so good, haven't encountered an error and I feel much more confident downloading things because no one makes Linux viruses.

  • the reason that her comp is slow on start up can be several reasons. Number one is that there may be several programs that activate on start up. That causes your computers processors to fill up fast and slow it down. Turn some of them off. Another reason may be the number of icons on your desktop could slow down your comps video and graphics cards to be used up. Lastly is your comp may have almost full hard drives. That slows down the comp as it tries to process all that is stored.
