Fair or Foul - You Make the Call

I'm a 13-year veteran umpire, and I can tell you that was an OUTSTANDING call.

I have seen PLENTY of fields with chalk lines smudged into foul territory. I'm constantly trying to rub out those stray marks between innings, to avoid this kind of situation, but it's impossible to get 'em all.

Take the video frame-by-frame, and you can see the ball hit the ground mere inches outside the proper line.

Of course, having a straight line to work with would have helped, too.

Unless the line is VERY well defined, just because you see chalk kick up does NOT mean it hit the chalk line.

The umpire needs to work on his signaling mechanics, however. The signal for a foul ball is BOTH hands being raised over the head while yelling, "Foul!"

It's really impossible to tell from this video whether that ball was fair or foul. It was close.

I love it when fans and even some players yell "it hit the chalk, it hit the chalk". What they don't realize is that alot of times, the chalk is either not in a straight line or it's uneven...as in more heavy in some spots than others...or a combination of the two. It's not where the ball hits the chalk, it's where the ball hits the ground. A slicing line drive like the one here most certainly could "nip" the chalk on it's way to hitting the ground in foul territory. Happens all the time.

@rockit730 The entire foul line is fair territory. So if the ball hits it in any way, its a fair ball. It doesnt matter if its "hooking or slicing". Now, if the gounds keeper the day before layed down a whole other chalk line and part of it merged with the newer one, thats a seperate issue and should have been adressed before the game.

The ball was on the inside of the field for the most part, and if it does land on the chalk, it's fair. but you can't get mad at the umpire for being put on the spot and having to make the call without expecting a play like this.
