James Doohan what a wonderful man, I loved the character of Scotty, but I loved the man James Doohan, I was devastated when he died and it was when I was young and Star Trek was all I had at a very diffcult time in my life wen I had nothing and I would dissapear into a world of Star Trek and Scotty was and still is one of my favourite characters, god bless you James :)
It's one of the worst Scottish accents out there. Honestly man, it's really bad. It sounds like a North American doing a very bad Scottish Accent. Canadians and American actors rarely can pull off a Scottish or Irish accent. Yet never seem to notice bad Scottish or Irish accents. Irish people do not sound like the Lucky Charms leprechaun or anything produced by hollywood or american TV. Scottish people do not sound like groundskeeper willy or Scotty from star trek.
@brainfreeze77 The funny thing is, as a Scotsman, I would say that Doohan's accent was great in the original TV series, but became worse as time went on. Either way it doesn't matter, he was great!

after all he has seen in his lifetime and all that he has done and achieved the best thing he has done in his life is to save that woman. not the fame or anything else. he was a good man. RIP scotty
@JMFSpike Shatner was an arrogant prick on set, and made the group environment of Star Trek (behind the scenes) a living hell. Research it ... you'll be surprised at what you find.
@Goldiney But there are always two sides to every story. Jealousy could also be a factor. Unless you actually know Shatner personally, I would take those stories with a grain of salt.
James Doohan kept this story to himself for years. It was his wife that told him he should share it with the fans. She was right, what Mr. Doohan did is in the spirit of what Gene Roddenberry was trying to teach people with Star Trek. The same thin Christ is trying to teach us, if everyone helps one another without getting rewarded then word piece will become a reality.
James Doohan is Canadian born and raised. He is of Irish ancestry His parents imigrated to Canada from Northern Ireland. Bangor, County Down to be exact.
This is a very heartfelt personal story. How would -you- react if you got a letter from a fan who was so desperately lost in life, he or she would be wiling to take it?.. I think James was a hero just for trying to give her a chance to go on.. I'm glad it turned out for the best, and I think it shows how he moved he was to made a difference.
It doesn' t take a Scotty or any fictional character to make a difference. Just be there for anyone who's in a crisis. It's the best we can do!
The best stement ever about the wonderful Jimmy Doohan from himself! Thank you, Denise Crosby! This is the way I want to remember him forever and ever! Montgomery Scotty, James Doohan, no matter the name, you're gonna live on our minds and hearts till the end of time!
look up "Trekkies James Doohan Clip" and take a grander, this is something that can bring a smile proving that things can turn out for the best from the last person you may think.
I doubt most celebrities would take the action that James Doohan did with this woman. I have a feeling most others would think the note was written by a nutcase fan, crying out for attention. They might be right for the most part, but for Doohan to make sure she got through a tough time in life safe and sound is truly classy. Godspeed, Jimmy.
i live in vancouver too in the early 90s i was a lil kid but i went to them at the convention center i miss them hell i still go my card from the star trek fan club of canada been gone 15 years
If you ever need an example of a selfless, kind, gentle and lovely human being, look no further than James Doohan. I posted before on here wishing I had met him and that still rings true, but even this gets my teary eyed because of the fact he considers helping others his finest moment.
If only there were more people like him in this world, most of our problems in this world would be over. He is not just an inspiration for Engineers, he is an inspiration for our very souls.
He was a wonderful individual. They said that him and DeForest were the most kindest and giving members. De once befriended a young girl who was deeply mentally retarded who was a fan of Star Trek and when the girl saw De, she started to make noises. The girl was a mute for 15 years. De said it was one of his best moments of his life.
THIS is his proudest moment? He fought in WW2 and was on Star Trek (one of the most successful franchises in history), and THIS is his proudest moment? Wow, this just shows that he was a beautiful person, and was willing to take time out to help a "nobody". You will live forever, James Doohan.
He fought for Canada, but was in the D-Day invasion. I guess you could technically call him American, since he was from North America. But hey- no harm, no foul. I don't care if he was Canadian, American or Mexican, he was a great guy nonetheless.
I got to meet him in his final years at one of his last appearances. He was probably around 80-81 then. Even though he looked frail and was obviously tired, he took the time to talk to all the fans as they met him, and even did an hour and a half Q&A session in one of the large rooms at the hotel. He was a class act, and a true gentleman!
I met Mr. Doohan at a Convention just after I lost a finger in an accident aboard ship in the Navy. He showed me his missing finger and gave me some encouragement. Years later I saw him at another convention and he remembered me. Very nice guy. Class act. The world is an emptier place without him.
I heard Jimmy Doohan on a local radio show in Seattle, a few years before he died...
He sounded like a broken, beaten man. he spent the majority of the interview complaining about being typecast his entire life; being unable to get any acting job besides Scotty.
It was really heartbreaking to hear a man that I always had heroic images of sound so beaten and defeated in life. During the interview, I thought about this clip, wondering where this man went that cared about what he inspired...
Well, I think he had Alzheimer's for at least the last year of his life... perhaps that had something to do with this particular interview? I do hope that he didn't truly feel that way about his life's work. Mr. Doohan acted in over 70 different tv shows and movies during his life, including 27 projects after Star Trek: TOS, not including other Star Trek projects. I'd say that's an excellent career, especially considering he was 49 years old when TOS was canceled in 1969.
He was diagnosed in 2004, but I think when he turned 80, he started to show signs. Watch the interview he did in 2003 and his speech was starting to slur, he was having trouble trying to remeber the things he did on the ST set.
"People" can say what they want about Star Trek and its fans. But it does what nothing else can do. It gives hope. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one. Live long and prosper, Trek fans!
What a wonderful story. When I was a kid, I idolized this man...undoubtedly because of this humanity we see here that came out in his acting. I don't think about Star Trek much anymore...I don't think that's to my credit.
You can sense the emotion in his voice. I wish I had met him, but what a lovely man. Possibly one of Star Treks most humane characters in and out of the Starfleet Uniform. He inspired me to study Engineering at University. I wish there were more people as kind and gentle as he was.
R.I.P James Doohan, I hope that you are fixing that Warp Core in the sky in peace.
That's really cool. The guy fought in WW2, yet still considers saving one human being from suicide his greatest moment. That's a good person right there.
Galatians 1:6-7: I marvel that you are so soon removed from Him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the Gospel of Christ.
Read the Bible, for it is God's Word. Jesus Christ is the only Savior (Acts 4:12). We must wait on Him completely for salvation. He will save those whom He wishes to save (Romans 9:15-16). Our faith cannot contribute to our salvation (Ephesians 2:8-10). familyradio(com)
Thanks for your line "I never wanted to be anything more than a good engineer" What a strong solid moral foundation. Id like to think I had done you proud Scotty....
Man ... someone tell me how you get to be more "stand-up" than this. This is a Star Trek story I never heard ... and if I held Jimmy Doohan in high regard for his handiwork on the screen, that regard is utterly eclipsed by this remarkable anecdote. Scotty may have been the miracle worker of the Enterprise, but Mr. Doohan worked his own miracles. Me 'at's off to you, Jimmy. Via con Dios.
That is beautiful.

R.I.P James Doohan, I hope that you are fixing that Warp Core in the sky in peace.

What a good man. We need more like him.

That's really cool. The guy fought in WW2, yet still considers saving one human being from suicide his greatest moment. That's a good person right there.

One of the best documentries.
the film NEVER judges the fans. it just lets them tell their side of their obsession.

I knew Jimmy and he was a wonderful person. He was just as you see him here.

i think star trek is very nerdy but thats a great story from a great person. not many stars would go to those sort of lengths for their fans

He was a D-Day hero as well. I am not a Trekkie, but had the pleasure of meeting him once, and he couldn't have been nicer.

God rest your soul and thank you for sharing a good story.

huh. I'm quite surprised about the fan sending a suicide note to Scottie. Dear me trekkies are devoted.
Then again I'd probs send my suicide note to Edward James Olmos if i could XD
Yay for Scottie though ^^

I was never a fan of the late James Doohan but this really is a great story. Makes you realise how compasionate the man was.

All he wanted to do was stop her from killing herself, and he ends up turning her life around for the better. Far better than he intended.
