The doctors found he was not clinically insane, so the judge sentenced him to a prison sentence at that point. Polanski already served his time in jail for his 'crime' (consensual sex, and no rape). It was the wisest thing in his situation to flee the U.S.: the judge was wrong wanting to have him punished twice for one sole offence. Another thing: Polanski is an exceptional person, with exceptional artistic ideas, often misjudged/misunderstood by people. For a lot of people it is pleasurable to trying to destroy such a strong person.

Polanski was ordered by the judge to undergo psychiatric evaluation for 90 days at a prison mental facility. The doctors found he was not clinically insane, so the judge sentenced him to a prison sentence at that point. He was not charged twice for the same crime, that is and always has been illegal in the US. The judge did nothing wrong it's laughable. Polanski is a sick bastard. Pt 1 of this interview he laments having to pay to have his carpet cleaned after Tate was murdered.

Polanski already served his time in jail for his 'crime' (consensual sex, and no rape). It was the wisest thing in his situation to flee the U.S.: the judge was wrong wanting to have him punished twice for one sole offence. Another thing: Polanski is an exceptional person, with exceptional artistic ideas, often misjudged/misunderstood by people. For a lot of people it is pleasurable to trying to destroy such a strong person.

I didn't perceive the US as astray. I must have seen a different part of it than you. I've only been to Chicago, St. Louis, Orlando, West Palm Beach, and their surrounding suburbs. It has worked out wonderfully. It's a country where it's much more difficult to survive with laziness, though, some people get away with it. Also, back to the point. Again, watch the documentary as not the only but a good source. You are being unfair to Polanski: he admitted to things as part of a plea and you are taking the admission and now using it to say he is guilty of greater crimes - public opinion can do that, courts may not. He did do his time but the judge was dishonest and was later removed. If you had any idea about the bargain I am talking about you would not be fixated on his return to France.

I'll let the courts decide Polanski's punishment - once he's back before them and competes the process he himself cut short. As for the film, one reviewer said: "In Zenovichs movie, Polanski comes off as a self-styled victim and a liar who pleaded innocent, changed his plea to guilty of unlawful sex with a minor, then ran away without telling his lawyers."
