  • W4 inf good nice sound 73 de sm4wit

  • great vid. I've been learning CW; i can send 15wpm but copying really trips me up because of hte variance in fist and send rate. I hope to get to at least 15/15 farnsworth, but i'm going to need a paddle for that. Been banging with a straight key for a few months and the iambic looks so much easier.

  • ur doing fine, the way u hve the key set up is for a left handed person but there is nothing wrong with a right handed person using it like u do. my wife crochets left handed and everyone she teaches right or left handed, crochets left handed.

  • Hey Rogertango, some of the people you get comments from seem very picky! You using the key this way....or that way.....Just keep loving CW and ignore the asses! PS hi again.....Joe

  • I hear you, but its not big deal, I invite all comments. I know I have a "backwards fist", but that is the way I learned, and... theres a lot of us that key this way so it cant be wrong. Actually, there is NO WRONG WAY to key, as long as the timing and spacing are proper!

  • Nice fist W4INF!

  • Thx, but I still suck! HA HA! Long live CW!

  • were can u find these?

  • Search Google for 'MFJ-564' and many sellers will come up. GL

  • An iam, as in iambic pentameter in poetry means just that--didah or dadi. A single lever paddle cannot be called an Iambic because iambic elements cannot be produced. Demonstrating an iambic key without demonstrating the single function it does uniquely is as the ichy2free says--not iambic. It is one way to use the key--and the way I use my own. But it is not iambic, just for clarity here. Those who have bothered to learn this technique would agree.

  • FYS, you are very true that I did not demonstrate Iambic technique but I did demonstrate the KEY and that was the intent of the video.

I thank you for viewing and posting,

  • I agree. Iambic key is: left paddle - continues dits; right paddle - continues dahs (or vice versa). The touch of dit paddle brakes the sequence of dahs (and vice versa). Thanks that to make Q, L, F, Y, K and R you need only 2 touches instead of 3. For C you need 3 touches instead of 2.

  • You can set dit and dah to the left or right, it is the personal preference of the operator. I do not personally use the squeeze. Thank you for viewing.

  • Good question. This is an Iambic key and keyer being demonstrated. You in fact refer to one aspect of Iambic capabilities and that is the "squeeze". I do not use the squeeze as for me it takes more effort. A more proficient operator that sends faster will use it. It is not necessary to squeeze to use the setup. I hope to post a video showing the squeeze and what it does. TU for viewing and comment. Best 73-

  • The Paddle is set in reverse, ie the normal way is the dots are created with the left paddle not the right,

but still very nice sending, maybe you like sending that way about

  • The way the paddle is setup is for the operator's preference, there is not "law" or hard set rule how any of this is supposed to work. I have DAH left and DIT right, thats the way I started learning it and thats the way I keep using it. There are many operators that do the same. Thanks for viewing and for the comment!

  • There is neither law nor 'hard set rule.' But there is a convention. Although 'many' operators do the same, they are a tiny fraction of radio amateurs. Conventionally, raymondbullock13's observation is correct. Nice sending--what do you do when you try to send on anybody else's key? Does it throw you off?

My grandpa has an MFJ that he uses. It's pretty functional.

  • SK is sent as one character ..._._; otherwise, OK. How much does a MFJ paddle cost?

  • I know, but Im still learning... :-0

An MFJ paddle cost about $60, what a used BY-1 cost and IMHO the BY-1 is better. I sold my MFJ for a BY-1 and am much happier with it. Thanks for viewing and posting. 73-
