In my opinion, performing an effective morote seoi nage you should go way more down from your knees. Morote seoi nage showed in this video needs too much power.
It isn't need to go much lower in seoi nage. The greatest masters of seoi never really go too low: Okano sensei, Koga, etc. There's great misconception about seoi-nage. Many people will say that you should lift and carry uke on your back, and this is wrong, seoi nage is not about lifting, it is more about floating (like uki-goshi). Instead of trying to lift uke with your hands you should throw down (the opposite of lifting). Getting lower is normally to compensate for lack of technique.
@loudenvier So are you saying the likes of Tadahiro Nomura and Ryoko Tani have bad seoi-nage technique? Maybe Okano made a mistake letting Eiji Maruku demonstrate a very low seoi-nage in Vital Judo, or Yoshiharu Minami should not have been invited to demonstrate his low seoi for the Masterclass book on the throw.
@JustGuess500 "Getting lower is normally to compensate the lack of technique" .. Normally does not imply ALWAYS. Nomura and Tani have superb technique, Tani's seoi is not that lower too... Minami seoi is amazing, but have you seen him demonstrating it? He does it always in a very upright posture, the problem is that he is such a small guy it is already very low ;-) And I bet you that Nomura, Tani, Minami, they only passed on to drop-seoi after mastering standard-seoi, today we see the contrary!
@qwinbosacari You can watch a great instructional by Koga in the video with ID 6t06sX5_J50 ) (or you can search for "KOGA,SEOI NAGE CAPITULO 1", it is the first result). You'll see that he doesn't get lower and the throw is effortless.
At first I almost dismissed this video because of the blue and white judogi... I thought to myself, how come one dressed like this, without respect for judo etiquette, hope to teach anyone this "classic" waza... But this was a humbling experience to me because despite my initial discrimination this demonstration are among the best I ever saw in a video in such short amount of time, and all throw executions were sharp and perfect, and all pointers really meaningful. Congratulations and thanks!
@BeyondGrappling I can't believe you took your time to answer my only complain about your video!!! Your technique had already earned my respect (despite the color mismatch) and now your personality have too. I am sure all your students respect and love you very much. Congrats and thanks for being such great addition to Judo in general (and also BJJ...)
I'm so glad I accidentally stumbled upon your videos. Very informative. Do you have a website??

The uchi-komi at the end is inspiring. I will try to do my repetitions like that. Nobody where I train does it like that.
