the flyers are tanking another season, the sixers are a pathetic load of garbage even with allen iverson, the phillies and eagles are all we philly fans have right now and i'm not holding out a whole lot of hope for the esgles right now either!
@saml760 The Flyers were a shootout away from watching the cup now they are in the finals. bet you didn't expect them to beat Jersey in the first round but now that they are in the final anything but a championship and they are a bunch of bums right. The Eagles of 2 years ago. pretty much needed the planets to align to get in the playoffs and a win from Oakland over Tampa make it.
@saml760 That year no-one gave them a shot (you I presume) but like my brother who was so disappointed when they lost to Arizona in the nfc championship you probably started bashing Andy Reid and D Mac and nothing but a SB ring would have made you happy. Philly teams have traditionally overcame the odds to go beyond expectations. This years flyers are perfect example. Sure we want more championships.
But how about showing more support for your team when they aren't playing championship level. "Flyers are tanking another season" well if this is tanking it I am glad to be with the Orange and Black. last year they were ousted by the Stanley cup winning Penguins, the year before they were ousted by the Penguins in the conference final. Pretty good results to a season where only one can say they are the champions and half can't even say they made the playoffs.
"The Flyers are tanking another season"? Sometimes we all need to eat our words Sami just be glad its a fellow Philly fan spoon feeding you and not some F#$%er from New York or Dallas.
The Flyers obviously haven't won anything yet but you are the typical Philly fan that is always so negative unless philly s constantly winning. Like I remind my brother (who is shares your attitude) we really never had the dynasty teams like San fran of the 80's or Edmonton of the 80s. Our city is always the feel good story of the blue collar guy overcoming the odds.
i am from phily and i am sortta mad dat the philles won cuz now all of the banwagon jumpers r goin 2 like them................ i lik a team were not alot of people love i love bein the underdog
Wooo! Thank god the Phillies won the World Championship. After a long drought, winning feels so good. There's just been too much heartbreak for so long and by a town that lives and dies by their sports; we couldn't ask for much more.
I just saw the Phillies clinched the World Series and now they are champions. This is comin fom a Chicago brotha. Looks like the Penn figure on top of the Comcast building was the architectural exorcism they needed. On behalf of a White Sox fan congrats to the Phillies (for knockin off the Rays): especially Johnny Rollins and Ryan Howard.
ok, with the phillies 10,000 loses, they are one of the oldest baseball teams in the league, and look where they are now, the world series! winning at that fact. and they placed a statue of william penn on the comcast building i think, or what ever building is the tallest in philly, so the curse is broken. o and the soul won the championship tittle too. (semipro football team of philly)
I didn't say they weren't a team, but there not a driving force in sports. The only three that matter NBA, NFL, and NFL. NHL matters in some part of the countries, but not most. AFL, WNBA, Minor League Baseball. These don't count as major sports. It's just a fact.
for those who are saying its the management thats partialy true, 1.A little bad management 2.Choking like McNabb in 04-05 superbowl. 3.The teams are better
i live in philly and im waitin for a championship and for someone to break the curse.....maybe the phils will do it this year..or the eagles there lookin pretty good.
Wannabe Boston fans? Wow, it sure is easy to have "balls" when typing a bunch of crap on youtube comments.
Yeah, Philly teams lost before 85 too, but the point is they HAVENT WON since William Penn has been eclipsed. Do you understand the point now? People don't actually believe there's a curse you fool- its just for sh*ts and giggles and adds to the theatre of sports.
Now that's the I was hoping for, a threat via internet. I understand the point of shits and giggles, however it reminds me of how Boston Fans would act. However I hope the Eagles and Phillies win championships this year. This could be potentially a great year in philadelphia sports. All the teams are at the right place and the right time.
I wasnt threatening you man, but as a Philly fan its annoying to be called a wannabe of the blue-blood elitism that is Boston fans. They act like their excrement doesnt stink.
I wish you could have seen the atmosphere in Jacksonville for Super Bowl 39, when about 70,000 Eagles fans took over that city and put Boston fans in their place. Yeah I know we lost the game, but anybody there for that week before the could attest to the presence of real fans there.
Whoever came up with the PENN TOWER curse is a whining new york/boston piece of sh*t.
There is no curse, you'll be a douchebag just like the rest of the east coast if you believe in it.
NO CURSE, okay they lost to a damm good BLUE JAYS team in 1993, they lost to a damm good team to the LAKERS in 2001, they lost to a damm good team to the RED WINGS in 1997.
I grew up in Philly and was only four in 1980 - the year all four teams made the finals. Being so young I honestly thought Philly teams had a bye to the finals each year and we played for the title against the best comer. That idea didn't last!
I've lived in downtown Boston since the '90s and have seen six parades. They're special and I hope Philly gets some soon.
Another sad Philly sports fact: The team with the most titles? The Philadelphia Athletics - and they left town in the 1950s.
Its simple, management will never make the extra step to be the best. The only time a Philly team corrected weaknesses was the 2004 Eagles when they signed Kearse and traded for TO and still fell short. Ownership never takes a chance to become great. When the celebration parade occurs, I bet at least 5 million will make the parade and in the words of beloved Tug McGraw, we'll shove it their asses.
no it is the curse of lousy management in all sports letting guys like Charles Barkley, Allen Iverson, Curt Schilling rest his soul Reggie white leave in there primes
I love Iverson, but he was traded a year or 2 too late. I don't think he'll ever win a championship with his game. You have to have a bunch of rebounders and defensive specialists like the '01 Sixers and teams like that usually don't sustain success for very long.
the Phantoms have won two Calder Cups since 97' We won in 2005 during the NHL lock out which technically made us the best hockey team in North America that year.
don't give up hope, we will over ride the curse. there is a billy penn statue at the top of the comcast tower now so victory shall be ours :)
Curses may be depressing and frustrating but they make sports fans that much more passionate. It will happen one year. It will probably be a team that isn't dominant, a team that just comes out of the blue and blitzes through the playoffs like a buzzsaw. I think this curse also gets into players heads once they get deep into the playoffs. Its all you hear on the news when we get close; "Philadelphia hasn't won a championship in 25 years."
I would never switch to being a Yankee, Habs, or Patriot fan! Every team gets there due eventually, did I mention I was a Red Sox fan? I can't stand Philly, but that's because you don't go out quietly! One day, "next year" will be "this year". So don't blame it on Penn.
This video is great, but what really caught my attention was the explanation of 'Penn's Curse' in your summary box. I've heard of the curse before, but never really asked anyone the true meaning. Thank you for posting this. Also - a fact I heard on WMMR the other day - The '75 Flyers were the last team in the NHL to win the Stanley Cup where EVERY player on the team was Canadian. Pretty cool fact, I thought.
Curses do exist... 1993 Phillies, 1997 Flyers, 2001 Sixers, 2004 Eagles... all made it to the final stage, only to fall short. 1983 our last Championship... here it is 2008, 25 years. The Silver Anniversary of no wins... and four teams. That means well over 100 seasons of falling short. But the foundations of "The Curse" are weakening, and soon will collapse. One Day. We will win. One Day.
god i hope so... but let's look at our prospects... if the phillies don't do it in the next year or two... we may have another 8-year rebuilding cycle... eagles? they are good, but you never know... last year everyone picked the birds to win the east, and the giants won the sb... flyers seem to be the kings of falling a hair short of being elite... and the 6ers enjoy moderate success once every few years... i hope it happens soon too... i hope once the dam bursts philly enjoys years of success
I'm Not a beat my chest philly sports fan and as of late there really is no reason to be, but a philly sports fan non the less, this video brought on a tear or two. what really set me off
was the statement "theres always next year" I hate that acceptance of mediocrity jargon. I was so young the last time we won a championship I don't even remember. so to me, it's like we never ever won any at all, for this I am sad.
please philly sports franchises a championship before I die I beg you.
Maybe for the same reason Nike used it in their commercial with Shawne Merriman And Steven Jackson. Or maybe since it has nothing to do with Boston because it was written in 1992 for the movie The Last of the Mohicans.
maybe the song was remade for Last of the Mohicans. Maybe it was actually written by South Boston local and Cork County Ireland native Trevor Hogan in 1848.
The Rolling Stones originated in London, England yet their song "Gimme Shelter" opens the movie the Departed, a movie which I'm sure you know is set in Boston. Your argument does not hold much weight. Music is Universal my friend.
Don't mind what FriendlyWalrus says, the song is beautiful.I also like the opening 20 seconds where there is an aerial view of the city (I'm orginally from Philly).Great Job!!!(^_^)
It's a little ridiculous to say that since a man wrote this song over 150 years ago in Boston, and has since been reworked and rearranged, and used as the focal point in many other pieces, I can't use this song. Music is not and should never be limited to one specific thing. But I guess you're right;)
24 Years... **Sigh** ...it hurts. I was born in 1987, and haven't seen a Philly Title during that time. The 93 Phils, the 00 Sixers, the 04 Eagles, the 07 Phils. So many close calls, so many heartbreaks. One day though, one day it'll happen, and I feel it coming, I really do. One day.
After hearing about this curse, I heard them all. I can't believe that sports teams from a city can lose because of architecture. This is comin from a man from Chicago, in which the "Black Sox Curse" (an illegitimate one b/c White Sox fans don't want to be confused with Cub fans) has ended in 2005.
As one of the producers of The Curse of William Penn film I send my compliments. It gives me goose bumps and makes me want to cry at the same time. But keep the faith man - OUR TIME IS COMING (why do I feel I have said that 1000 times in my life).

I was born in 1985, so I have gone my entire life without seeing a Philadelphia championship. But I keep coming back year after year, season after season, putting myself through misery.
Sjekim the reason why we go through this misery season after season is because we are REAL Philly sports fans. This is who we are and believe me when our teams reach the "promised land" it'll be very memorable and tears will be shed, tears of joy (^_^) Keep the dream alive (^_~)
