@tinytomlinson 30 gallons would be better, but 20 gallons might be okay.
Good tank mates vary widely because depending on where you get them, an what they've been eating, depends on how aggressive they are. You also have to make sure you're capable of maintaining a brackish water environment for them (SG levels of 0.10-0.18 are ideal)
@xenablake1 The GSP prefers brackish conditions of 0.010-0.018, but have been known to live in full marine (0.024~) quite happily... make sure you acclimate them slowly of the course of a week or two, an as long as the tank is large enough... it shouldn't be too bad.
young puffers are alright in fresh water but should be changed gradualy to brackish once they start to mature their survival rate is far higher in a brackish water
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yes it is fresh water, though the puffer he has is said to be kept in brackish water, they tend to like freshwater. The down side to freshwater is it needs to be VERY VERY clean, puffers are real sensitive to bad water
salt water is harder to keep clean than fresh water. and salt can be much more easily over crowded u better be glad these ppl dont have salt or all their fish would die and none of em would understand
in my expierience puffers are very hardy when it comes to water differentials most brakish puffers evolved in estuaries im going to explain it anyway . a place where a river meets an ocean, where diff temperatures and water conditions such as salinity, diff types of debris
I HEARD that the general rule is indian dwarf puffers (pea puffers sold as freshwater) are the ONLY aquarium trade puffers that do better alone than together. They STILL don't do GREAT in community tanks but if there's enough other fish they are too small and timid to do any damage. However put 2 of them in the tank and they will fight with each other and hurt other fish. GSP may be similar but they will eat anything that they can fit a PART of in their mouth even bigger fish. IE: pipefish
I know a young little fahaka puffer that eats hi-pheng/hikari pellets. poor thing is being kept in pure freshwater but is still doing alright. he IS a baby though. maybe an adult who's been spoiled will be harder to change.
what about dead crabs? would you feel bad about freezing a crab and dropping it in the water? crustaceans/most fish have almost no nervous system compared to humans. They don't feel as much pain as us. Notice when they get badly injured they just go on like nothing happend
ugh not true they are cold blooded so when you freeze them they do feel it as ice crystals form in their blood, imagine your blood being slowly frozen as it circulates through you ;o it's easier to use an aniscetic for fish and slowly increase the dosage it will put them to sleep and then you od them.
The most idiotic thing about your post isn't that it's wrong... oh no no... it's that it's entirely pointless advice you give at the end.
Why would you overdose a crab with chemicals right before feeding it to your expensive pet!??!?!?!?!
OMG

Ya everyone put chemicals in the water and kill a crab so you can feed it to a puffer! Wouldn't it be easier to just put the chemical directly in the puffer's water???
i think a 10 or 20g they can live in fresh but not for long i suggest putting at least half than what is recommended on the box of aquarium salt if u have fresh water fish, its good for most fish to have some salt in there
If you put half of a bag intended for a 10G sw tank in a 10G freshwater tank all your scaleless fish will die. I don't know how long it takes to kill them but it shouldn't take longer than a few days if not a few hours.
Red claw crabs are semi aquatic brackish water crustaceans. They need to go to the surface to breathe every now and then. I have 4 figure eight puffers and 1 green spotted puffer;they never have bothered any of my fiddlers and red claw crabs. All my fish and invertabrates live in strong brackish water.
I dont believe this particular species of crab can "smim" to the surface for air like other crabs can, when i killed my first pair of RCC's i though they would be able to do the same thing. They tried for hours to climb the plastic plants to the surface in futility and died. I had no idea what they were doing and watched them for a while. Im sure if they could swim up they woud have. IMHO they need to be able to climb something to reach the the surface when they need to.
what your red claws were doing is trying to get away from the bottom as the nitrates would have been high (although ok for the fish) these crabs are extra sensitive to waste and as they dwell on the bottom are in contact with it all the time. any slight build up will poison them. they need extra water changes to keep the nitrates low constantly.
this is why your crabs died, they would have begun moving slowly and even kept flipping on their backs too. sadly this happens a lot but its not the owners fault as its hard to tell as the water is still fine for the fish.
I keep fish now too and i know alot more than i did back then, thank goodness for my fish. The crabs i was referring to were with me during a 3 hour flight in a small betta container. It was an experience. Even with their sensitivities to the three n's, I think they drowned before they polluted their water. Especially since they went on the flight with a fresh change of water.
Well anyway lol, to all the viewers keep your water clean and make sure they can climb up to the surface if you want to keep these critters. They sure do have a lot of personality.
and by fish keeper i don't mean in my house, i own an aquarium so i hope for the crabs sake i'm right! i just like to see fish get the care they need.
red claw crabs do need land. I had one and the stupid petsmart associate told me it didnt. It kept crawling up my heater and sitting out of the water. Well it lasted 3 weeks. So i guess land is atleas highly recommended.
Get him out? That's delicious, delicious food you're wasting there!

It looks like a fiddler crab. Fiddler crabs are land dwellers and have lungs. He died because he drowned.
