  • This is what happens when people become way too politically involved.

  • Being a Yank and learning about this conflict (most americans don't even know there is a northern ireland), how is it that with all the civilians killed in this senseless war, that this Ian Paisley character has not been shot by a sniper, much less cracked over the head with a baton? What a hateful man, and he is a "man of God"???

  • Do you know why the provos never tried to kill Paisely? He provided enough propaganda for them so they allowed him to live, he could do more alive and than dead. He showed the outside world the true nature of Loyalists and their hypocrisy.

  • How he changed . lmao

  • Dr Ian Paisley a lovely man a hero god bless him we need more like him

  • @1000philgsxr he is a fuckin scumbag who will rot in hell

  • all members of the ruc poop in tire wheels

  • Facinating documentary....How can anyone suoort a man like Paisley....Such a beautiful country. I pray for peace thruout.

  • What were they doing with that man at the beginning?

  • @skoi87 where can i see how this? never heard it before

  • Fucking wanker criticising the R.U.C when they were doing the best to keep the peace against odds they couldn't even comprehend at that time and what have we got now ? The fucking P.S.N.I , bunch of useless bastards or as me and my friends like to call them , police service not interested.

  • @MrChristophe156 Poster /Sign, put up on a billboard of Nationalist area of North Belfast buring the Seventies....... ......'Help The R.U.C.' ... Painted across same... 'Beat yourself up'.... I should have taken a photo of same..........Northern Ireland needs the R.U.C. back on the streets as much as it needs the Stormont of old Back.... Me thinks it'sjust time to just move on.....

  • lol, reminds me of the kkk. They cant be serious? can they?

  • typical fenian attitude

  • @kitzel1971 fuck you im a proud fenian that means irish warrior

  • i know what the word means, i live in ireland

  • paisley what a twat...kicking off about the army dragging that man out of the builidng...now he knows what catholics had felt for decades

  • Micheal Stone is a fantasist , if the british security services equipped him the death toll would have been higher and he has an axe to grind .

  • is that ballbag with the side burns hugh smith pup councillor in belfast do u stand by that statement hugh...i dont think so

  • Fascinating series which really brings home how dark and terrible a past the province and it's people have suffered. Surely after re-viewing the horrors documented on here, the people and politicians of NI have no wish to return to such fear and uncertainty. Many thanks to original poster. Some remarkable footage, which I remember vagualy as a child on news reports etc.

  • one third back then...it's 40.1% last checked and on the rise because Catholics have bigger families.....if 51% want a united Ireland it should be accepted.

  • the should have hung all terrorist no matter wot their religion or political veiws instead of chuckin them in prison, feeding them & educating at the tax payers expense then settin them free into society again to reoffend.

  • Paisley provoked the IRA you. him and his supporters were commiting racist violence.

  • Ian Paisley is a wishey washy traitor who sat down with Martin and Gerry.

  • fuck the u.d.a!! and fuck ian paisley!! they killed and brutally mistreated the catholics of n.ireland during the troubles!!! god bless ireland and the republican brotherhood!! tiochfaidh ar la!!

  • Ian Paisley killed and mistreated people?

Christ first time I heard of this....

Surely this is rather ironic, perhaps you forgot about the 1500 people the ira killed? Many of them tortured? Ring a bell?

  • Unlike the IRA, the majority of the people killed by the various U.V.F and U.D.A were innocent people with no political ties. Paisley was the voice of these bastards. If you don't believe me...look it up? Its been well documented by sources who have no bias toward either side.

  • killed over 3000, most of which were legit war targets, the brits killed unarmed civilians in cold blood, oppressed and attempted, unsuccessfully, to control and "tame" us. they and the British Security forces gave weapons to loyalist serial killers, shot innocent Nationalists, and tortured plenty of people themselves, so learn your shit.

  • And you honestly believe this bullshit?

  • what bullshit, they are facts, check them, you dopey cunt.

  • @IrelandRaven Oh please how biased is that view . Its you that needs to learn your shit .

  • @dafydd67 michael stone admitted the brits equipped him to bomb the milltown cemetery, and that they saved his when the mourners caught him

  • @12321232123212123212 Lol, Paisley made it so you prods had to live in fear in your own land and be subject to terrorism because his biggoted ass didn't want to give the catholics any riots. Lol, what a great leader he was.

  • he reminds me of a guy in 1939 nazi germany,,,,,

  • well being a republican you should recognise the nazi party, they were your best pals in ww2 . So you are really o insulting your own kind. if you dont believe me google operation green.

  • Speaking of Nazis, who was supporting them and fueling their U-boats?

  • reminds me somewhat of 1939 nazi germany

  • i will dance a jig when this prick drops dead , u,t,p.

  • Im not political, i dont care for religion at all. Tho i am from a republican area... It's funny how the British conolised so many countries but they could not conolise Ireland lol

  • partition was done under the treat of war with britan... ireland could not defend its self against the british .... history has shown that the treaty was forced knowing civil war would follow... if england was invaded by germany and taken over after ww1 and then the germans asked you to help to defend it when it was attacked... what would your answer be??? britan has shit on the irish for so so long... all people wanted was equal rights... not a united ireland.. shame on the british

  • you agread to partition, why did you break your deal.

    fucking back stabbers

  • It will be a happy day in the Republic when old man Paisley finally caps it

  • If any one person were to be singled out as the greatest impediment to peace in Northern Ireland, Ian Paisley would surely take the prize. A consummate seeker of attention who inflamed passions and brought to the surface the very base nature of humanity. A psychopath who then had the temerity to call himself a man of God.

  • well said! He has committed himself to god and as such has used this position as a facade to protect his evil intentions. He has now changed his attitude with regards to the peace process to justify his past existence and act as a kind of repentance to his past legacy.

Saying that, i must applaud him in joining the other politicians to achieve a peaceful outcome to Norn Irons appauling past!

  • satanic to the core......

the biggest obsticle to peace in the north

  • .But the problem remain. Each side needs in principle what the other side can not concede in principle. Never a truer word spoken.

  • agreed also

  • IAN PAISLEY LOVES THE COCK

  • btw youtube is not a battlefield...

  • llf we won

    fuck ireland

    we are the champions

  • Yeah, be sure to tell that to your Sinn Fein lord mayor there in Belfast, champ. :D

  • paisley may be evil but not as evil as adams and that other clown who support terrorists

  • What do you think Paisley supported? Paisley was always part of the problem, never part of the solution. He basked in his hatred for anyone who opposed his views, be they Unionist or Nationalist. He didnt believe in dialog or compromise, and ultimately contributed to many unnecessary deaths in Northern Ireland.

  • yes very good so paisley is to blame for the cowards who are still murdering people to this day, i think not, republicans are hateful always have and always will be, peace aint good enough so they have to murder police and soldiers

  • agreed!

  • Your contribution has been very considered and balanced on this series. Thanks for a bit of rational thought.

  • That's probably true.

  • paisley is the devil, he will rott in hell forever

  • rather f*ck you and please consider suicide.

  • do1

ill spell FUK the way i want u fukin tramp ...

y u wastin ur time on a video bout irish history if ur jus gonna be ritin hate coments like 'fuck ireland' dats wot i call PATHETIC

  • fuck u paki

    british rule

  • The End - Asians, Africans, Muslims, take over without effort. Filthy races degenerate a once great nation. Odin returns with his Viking warriors and destroys the Pigs. All Jewish religions are destroyed and peace is restored once again!

  • no the ol mess hasen't died yet.(thak god he has resigned though)his son isn't too popular either. slan!!

  • Hey, as someone who not from Ireland, has the old Paisley finally died? I am Irish American and can recall my dad cursing the man up and down as a boy; and this from a country that produced Bush!:) Also, doesn't he have a stupid ass son who is trying to be like his daddy (in politics)up there in the North? Take it from an American, father son duos don't do anyone good:)

  • what would you no anyway u twat! paisleys the best thing that ever happend to n.i!

  • Amazing. Paisley had no concept of what was fair. He thought that he could win it. But he had no appreciation for what his course of action really meant. Faulkner was so right so long ago.

I guess Paisley now has seen the error of his ways.

  • Amazing to watch Paisley then and Paisley now. I mean if you were one of his staunch supporters you MUST feel betrayed and I say that as an nationalist. It was another world then, very very bitter and angry time. I hope that this Executive holds but when I see this I realise just how fragile it is. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it all broke down again as there is just too much hatred about. The 2 communities will NEVER be content until one has complete victory over the other.

  • we'll never be able to be content with people like you who won't even give it a chance! muppet

  • thatcher distroyed this country. My dather says it will take 49 years to put britain back to what it use to be after that fascist tiry bitch thatcher?????

  • nut its ian paisley throughout

  • hatred still runs deep..Both of you are right and wrong maybe you should all have tried to make the best of it from the start of partition..i mean that paisley character is in a governement with sinn fein now isn't he...

  • working class protestants kissing british queen's arse. Why do working class not vote Labour?TORIES

  • VOTE LABOUR ? look at the state of the UK now under 11 yrs of labour !

  • The British gov't should not have allowed the Army to run the public utilities. They should have forced collective bargaining.

  • codownni ur opinion doesnt count ur n inbred prod cunt. off into d corner with u n no more shite, give your sister back her clothes ya fuckin tranny. tiocfaidh ar la.

if you think the uda will be remembered as brave put a ^ next to your comment plzz it is a study i am doin

  • God save eire

    God save the people

  • all acts of war are terrible. but it is sometimes necessary. bombing is horrific but i can guarantee you that it bent the ear of the british gov. and what a pity it took canary wharf (2 deaths) but ultimately a financial reason to make them take heed. rather than all the human casualties. they were hit where it hurt- financially. finance mattered more.

  • if the ira had a de facto military then they would've fought the british that way. a people who are powerless will not be listened to by the people in power ,until the people in power HAVE to listen. people in power usually only HAVE to listen when there is a metaphorical finger jabbed in their eye. it is a pity - but that is the nature of power and the voice of the powerless being heard.

  • Man I don't know what is more depressing reading these comments here...the sectarian hatred or the Marxist/Socialist Anti American idiots???

One thing I can agree with..a terrorist is a terrorist whether IRA or Sri Lankan Tigers or Marxist Scumbags in Peru or Ulster Loyalists that murder .....

Thankfully...it does seem that my ancestrel home of Northern Ireland is heading in the right direction!!

  • If you can say that, then you really have not watched and taken in all of this excellent documentary. It shows the so called modern "birthplace of democracy" to have been nothing but another bully nation, devoid of any answers for decades. Doubtless, the same tactics are being used in a totally foreign lands right now (Iraq and Afghanistan)!

  • Terrorists blow up other peoples s**t, not their own! The IRA were a freedom force not to be confused with the real terrorists, the british army, & now they bring the same terror to Iraq with similar results, When will they learn!

  • gandhi got the brits his way by letting the porkis steal the present day of porkistan and beggerdesh from the hindus whom have been living their for thousand of years the reason he got kill was by telling the hindus to look the other way while the pigs when on killing us study the history of india u'll know how the brits divide and rule i guess NR also to a extend was divide through this tactic...

  • You are Indian? Living in England? Where did you learn History? There were more Hindus and Moslems killed after the British left than ever during the Raj; over a million in four months. Even now the killing goes on. I was in Ahmedabad a few years ago, some 500 were killed in riots then.Poor souls the relatives were left to carry there dead home in carts while the police watched! Divide and rule was to stop that sort of sectarian hell. No one is more cruel to the Indian than the Indian! .

  • that was duum

  • al fuckin show u what a protest is ya wee fuckin tramp that u are

  • paisley and and the catholic church have had the working class of ulster swimming in their own shit for the last 40 years

  • black bastards!!! fucking huns have no culture and all they do is protest. fucking waste of space they and that cunt paisley should all fuck off

  • al fuckin kill u ya dirty fenian bastard that u fuckin are, ya smelly little bastard that u fuckin are, send yer fuckin sinn fuckin fein up your fuckin smelly wee but fuckin hole

  • You have a PC paddy? Fuck me, the last time I was in N.I. you dumb witted fuckwits could hardly work a light switch. Inbreads.

  • Shut up you keyboard gangster cunt. Do you think you look cool or hard threatining people on youtube??? Because guess what? You dont! You look pathetic you stupid cunt.

  • Paisley will soon be taking his thrown in hell another clean shirt will do the poisonous old goat

  • easy comment!! refuse to see the history of injustice and say "one is as bad as the other" - just lazy imo

  • The troubles, thats a fuckin laugh, who prefers the pointy side of the egg or who likes the round side. Was it worth all the bloodshed? To have grown adults abusing young children because they dared walk through their area to go to school. Hope you all feel big.

  • Do you stand against desegregation in America? Do you believe in EQUAL RIGHTS? If people are throwing urine on catholic school girls in Northern Ireland or shouting at black school girls in the American South, it's WRONG! Such evils should be resisted: they were called the Provisional IRA and they were freedom fighters, not terrorists.

  • FREEDOM FIGHTERS, man I laughed so hard I nearly had a hernia. Terrorists pure and simple, lets not try and romanticise this. Its like saying BinLaden was just having a jolly jest.

  • A people fighting for the removal of a foreign power from their homeland ought to be called freedom fighters. Killing children and innocent shoppers is something else and something that happened on both sides of the troubles. Here in America the founding fathers fought a guerilla war against the british and they're heros. The IRA fought the same fight in more modern times.

  • And it was America that largly funded the IRA, can't see that happening now though. The IRA fought their "war" in the most cowardly way imaginable, you were not on the streets picking up bits of human flesh, I was. Dont kid yourself, these are not lovable Irish rogues but cold-hearted bastards.

  • I'm just glad that peace is touching the emerald isle and the irish will have their votes counted in their own land. The English can have England and Ireland for the Irish. No reason Paisley can't stroke the protestants in peace, no conflict there. The violence was retaliatory, for 800 years the Irish were treated as less than human. The IRA is the result.

  • N.I. is British, always will be. An 800 year old grudge, only the paddies. Have you seen "will it blend" on youtube? I would put Adams and Paisley through it and use their bloodied pulp to fertalize the earth they have sullied.

  • A grudge is something you hold for a single action. What the Irish faced was about 800 years of constant economic and political oppression. Left to eat grass in the famine, left to defend themselves from the black and tans, and left to fight on their own for equality in N.I. Cromwell might have kicked some farmers off their land but he didn't wrench the history from the soil

  • Yes because the world is that black and white. You live in a cartoon fantasy world. Yet another American simpleton!

  • Clap clap clap very well put. TheGreatFoldini has been watching The Tall Man.

  • It's far from black and white. Sapperiain's comment that all the trouble is no more than the preference of one side of an egg or another is simpleton dismissive foolhearty talk, just like calling me illiterate. If your shit doesn't stink then sit in it. the british started the violence and Sinn Fein has been in the process of ending it.

  • Showing your ignorance thegreatchildfondle, the british never started this. As for bsmoothboreafuck, who cares?

  • Ignorant? Illiterate? and now a child molester? I don't know whom it was that raised you but they probably were all of the above. I pity you. Peace in Ireland. Up the Ra. now that Paisley let the Irish into the talks there no way we can lose. It's no wonder the brits are better at violence, but at talking? forget it!

  • Are you honestly from London, England and accusing Americans of ignorance?? At this point in time (2007) just about any citizen in the world can submit such a charge but certainly not a British one. To do so would be to advance the same filthy spin that coerced millions of American farmers to vote against their interests and principals in order to elect Bush in the first place. (see below)

  • Why should British people not suggest this? We are considerably more aware of the British/US imperialist agenda. The largest organised protest in British history was against the Iraq war. 750,000 turned out during the height of all the lies about WMD and Iraqi links to terrorism. To let Bush and his cronies back in, even if only ahead of the mildly less pro-war Kerry, was just unacceptable. I love the US but was a painful low point in my feelings towards it.

  • I understand why you believe that the British people are "more aware" of the UK/US agenda but it would take me so many of these "500 max character" paragraphs to convince you otherwise that I won't bother. Just consider what effect those 750k protesters had on your government's ultimate decisions, take my last remarks into account and then think about this issue over time (you will see you've been duped more than you believe). Regardless, this topic is a complete tangent to The Troubles...

  • Of course we had no effect. I never claimed we did and never believed we would. The entire 40m or so adult population could have marched that day and it would not have made the slightest difference. This is because we have a democracy that the Ancient Greeks wouldn't recognise. The US is much the same but, as far as I can see, there is considerably more ignorance of this situation. What Marx would have called it a lack of class consciousness. Hopefully one day soon it'll start to develop!

  • It is the elite of Britain and the U.S., after capitalizing upon the spoils stretching from inheritance, substantially enhanced by the foreign ownership of American debt through the Federal Reserve Act which has led to the current economic imperialist initiatives advanced by both states. Look at the majority stock ownership of those who benefit from the newly secured resources and "free" markets. Indeed, you are just as ignorant as that Nebraskan farmer that voted for GWB.

  • [obviously I submitted these comments in response to Alessandro-douchebag-1985]

  • If the world trade centre was bombed by the IRA because of the amount of protestants that worked there, would you be so keen to support these terrorists? The world changed with the first terrorist attack on the USA. In the UK we have had these senseless tacks for 30 years. Your American dollar has probably contributed to a lot of deaths here on british soil. Lets not forget a terrorist is a terrorist, not a freedom fighter.

  • But is a misconception to think it was anything to do with hating Protestants or vice versa. When Loyalist gangs hurled stones into Catholic areas, they clearly weren't thinking 'transubstation my arse'. It was more a class issue in many ways. The minority, mainly working class, nationalist communities were treated like absolutely shite for years. The PIRA foundation in 1969 was just a reflection of that. For a period, they maybe could have been regarded as freedom fighters but not for long.

  • I agree with basically everything you've said here and i'm glad you got pulled into this little melee. I would never defend the murder of innocent civilians but i can understand attacking military targets out of outrage and discrimination. however it is a counter-productive tactic. Ghandi got the british out of India the proper way: peacefully, same with Mandela, they transcended the tortures of England and united their people.

  • This is a typical ignorant, utterly illiterate, disgracefully stupid, American. 'The Emerald Isle blah blah blah blah'. You live in some idiot disney world fantasy. The IRA were evil. They were monsters. I say this categorically. They murdered innocent Londoners going to the shops, sitting on buses, ect (they murdered working class people who hadn't had an opinion on Ireland in their life, they murdered children and tourists) for thirty years. Please spare us your idiocy.

  • "Irish-Americans" just don't get it. Maybe if they'd lived through the bombings like "Irish-British" Londoners or ex-pats (no small numbers in London, at the time), they'd have some clue. It was a daily reality for us and we actually knew the politics of it. There was no shortage of anger at what was happening to people in N.Ireland but murdering innocent people over here in response never did them any good. No matter how much they protested about them being 'military targets'.

  • The bombs weren't intended to kill Londoners genius, tahts why the IRA always gave warnings.

They were intended for ecomnic targets (the baltic exchange, canary warf ect).

If they wanted to kill civilians they could have killed them by the score.

The best example of a successful bombing campaign was in Manchester in 1996. Lots of warning, no dead civilians, cost Britian 700 million.

  • My point was, it is irrelevant who they were targeting, claimed to be targeting or whether or not they'd phoned through a warning. They killed innocent civilians and innocent children at that, in Warrington. The Israelis claimed to be hitting military targets in Lebanon last year but does anyone really care about that? Ditto the coalition in Iraq. They shouldn't be bombing anyone in the first place. That is the point. Either way, as a tactic is was hopeless and lost the IRA a lot of support.

  • As opposed to the brave British soldiers shooting kids with plastic bullets?

The IRA in south Armagh met the Brits head on to the point where they had to travel by helicopter due to the ground being too dangerous. They retrated into heavily fortified bunkers and mountain top lookout points.

  • I have no issue with the IRA insofar as the nationalist community had every right to defend themselves against the increasing aggression and intimidation against them. No one should have to take what they were taking. But the bombing campaign in the UK went beyond that. Either way, it was tactically a disaster. So what that some bombs cost a few already rich capitalists some money? The aim was surely for British troops to pull out of N.Ireland? In that respect it was counter productive.

  • when war is begun it is essential that it is carried out to its most violent extreme expression -and done so quickly. that is the only way of arriving at its end. i can detest war- but i let that emotion get in the way of what has already begun -then i guarantee you -the misery and suffering will last longer.
