My favorite song by the king of rockabilly. Amazing production technique with horn arrangement that mimicks a steel guitar. Jerry Fuller penned this simple but haunting song along with another RN classic Travelin Man and his formula was spot on; this is arrangement and production at it's finest. And then there is Rick Nelson, perhaps the most straight-on singer ever, that leaves his cover-singers sounding downright foolish.
This is my favorite of all his songs, he was such a part of my youth and his music will never be forgotten by so many of our generation. I only wish he would have lived longer and made more music.
Saw Rick in Dallas at the Olla Padria and old club now torn down. I grewe up just down the street from James Burton and remember when he quit working for Rick and came home.
When I arrived at George AFB in Victorville, CA. on 1/9/1982, I saw that Rick Nelson was performing that weekend at the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds. Not having bought a car + not being familiar with the area, I didn't realize the San Bernardino Fairgrounds was right in Victorville about 7 miles from the base. Had I known, I would have found a way to get in town and see him. He always seemed to be playing somewhere in the local area. Finally saw him in Vegas in Jan. of 1985. Great show!!!
@August8th1969 This is the first time I've seen Victorville mentioned. We moved from Santa Clara, CA to Apple Valley in 1956 and I graduated from Victor Valley High in 1962. I knew quite a few guys stationed at George A F B including several musicians. Some pretty fair pool shooters too! By the way, my little brother saw Ricky perform at the S. B. County Fair not long before he was killed. Take care.
@fairlyfastfreddie1 Hey there! born and raised in the high desert.St.mary's 1963,grew up in victorville till 15 yrs old then moved to Applevalley.Graduateed from VV high in 1981.48 years old and still here! You abviously graduated with my aunts and uncles :)
If you were born in the same era that I was (1947) then you too were so fortunate to have watched & listened to this great great singer. When Ricky was killed, on December 31,1985 I made a large sign for the back window of my car. It read, "Ricky ~ We'll Miss You."

I watched the Nelson's when they were on TV back in the late '50's.Ricky Nelson and the great James Burton on guitar.Doesn't get any better than that!!!!
just recently heard an interview with rick's guitarist james burton..seen to rick's left and he's still pretty active in the biz.....thx for this upload....jeff
Hi - so glad he sang so many of his songs and interpreting other songs too. LOVE his easy way and
cool style.. I was so saddened by the lost of the last Nelson - David.. because they are gone.. I feel they were part of my family.. At least they are together in heaven.. and smiling.. RIP the entire Nelson family.
The best shows were when Ricky sang....made my little preteen heart go pitter-pat. I always liked that guitar player in the back, when I learned his name I never forgot it. James Burton, you're the man.
Wouldn't you just love to sit down with Tracy (Nelson), who was born just 6 months after this recording was released, just to tell her what a very special person, and artist, her father was. Have you ever looked into her eyes? When I see those blue blue eyes of hers, it is as though Ricky himself were standing in front of you. By 1962 I had every album that Ricky Nelson had released and when he was killed on December 31, 1985 a bit of me died with him. You were the best Ricky!
OMG he was so gorgeous. No wonder i was totally in love with him back there in the last century! I even went to his concerts, full of screamers, including me. Never missed the tv show either.
He was the best and I never missed this show on TV.. Ozzie and Harriet. I lived to watch it back then. I saw him in concert when I was 16 and he was about the same age, at the Carter-Barron Outdoor Theater. What a memory. It was a real heart-breaker when he died that New Years. It is great to see these videos and hear him sing once more.
This song is from the "It's Up To You" album released in April of 1963. I was 9 years old, transistor radio under my pillow, going off to slumber land with this tune in my ears. The 'golden' age of music indeed! :) I am sooo lucky to have lived in that era!
I was dating the first real love of my life when this song hit the air ways. Yes, you Janet, my Natalie Wood look alike. Well, I went away to college and she met another guy at her Heights High school....you know the rest of the story. Yes, baby, I carried the torch for years......always...RR
This Aussie loves Ricky Nelson as well. Fantastic songs, great songs and what a fantastic looking buy. It is such a shame he left he music world so young
Tracy ~ If you ever visit this post, I want to tell you that your dad was the very best. I'll bet there isn't a day in your life when you don't wake up thinking how special your dad was. You should be very very proud of him. We miss him more than I can ever express.
Having been born in 1947 I grew up with the Nelson Family; Ozzie, Harriet, David and Ricky and I can tell you that my life was made that much better by the presence of this family and, in particular, Ricky. When he was killed on December 31, 1985 I made a big sign for the back window of my car which read, "We'll miss you Ricky." It's been 25 years & I miss him still
@mikemper ~ You hit it right on the nail ~ the horns in the background are so so enjoyable ~ listeners need to concentrate on the horns and they will appreciate the sound Of course James Burton playing his Fender Telecaster didn't hurt. Burton has been recognized as one of the best of his era ~ he was the special guest at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Gutiar Festival in Chicago last summer. Burton played behind Ricky from '57 or '58 until '69 and then went on to back up Elvis Presley until 1977.
Those were the days, when guys looked sooooo sexy suited and booted. Ricky was such a good looking guy, too. I feel so privileged to have grown up listening to this type of music on my transistor radio. I didn't realise it then, but those were the happiest days of my life.
@MegaAxelG I do agree with you ...I was a little girl , but already so in love with thisboy !!! ...Later I loved Elvis ...and also the Beatles ...when I was older ...but never forget Ricky ...hope he sees us from above and likes that we still enjoy his sweet songs .....
@MegaAxelG No shit with those Handsome clean-cut looks and beautiful singing voice you would have a lot of girls too . But actualy her got married quite young.
A very under-rated performer. This guy had a lot of chart topping singles and albums. What a pleasant voice. I have enjoyed listening to his hits for all these many years. What a tragic ending to his life, but his music survives him. Miss ya', Rick... you're truly one of the great ones.
@brucer12 I didn't know that about David. Wow....I'm 56, and it really does seem that there have been sooo many darn deaths of beloved performers as of late. Better get used to it, I guess.
Who are the other cats playing with him? All of them darn good in their own rights. Personally, I think that if this song were released today that it would chart. I really mean that. Trying to find it's genre would be tough, but this is too good.
doesn't matter why hedied just tragic that he died so young, He was so incredibly goodlooking and his voice could melt the coldest heart a tragic end but he left behind his music and four talented children. Look at Sam and listen to him sing Garden Party and he is so like his father. Love to hear and see Matthew and Gunnar but Sam is such a huge reminder of Rick. .smarvel1960
these were the days BEFORE auto-tune. you had to actually have TALENT to do well. Rick did that, and he did it well. he'll never get the credit he deserves. i hope his sons do.
I got to see Rickey two times. 1980, and took a lot of pictures 5 to 10 feet away. Then in 1983. I showed him the pictures while they were doing a solo, yelled that I took these a few years ago. He yelled back can I have one. I gave him one. How's that!
Rick left a catalog of timeless treasures to the world that will not be forgotten. Condolences to the Nelson family on brother Dave who past away in Janurary of 2011 too. The Nelson family were a model family to be emulated.
@goldfortress Your condolences dont go unnoticed. My last name isn't nelson but marriage changes that. Our family apperciates your kindness. Both Dave and Ricky are missed. Our family will never be the same. Thank you.(:
WOW!!! And that was 'live'.!!!.. no remixes, overdubs and a faultless recording without any electronic digital paraphernalia whatsoever. Just a good honest voice, fabulous backup vocals and guitar.
@1ausskipper - I'm afraid I have to disagree. I don't believe this is live at all. I'm 99.9% positive he is simply miming the record here just like almost every live appearance by a band on television into the 70's. This sounds identical to the record and includes the brass instruments, which are nowhere to be seen in the video. Studio recordings at this time were still being recorded as a one shot live recording, which means everybody had to be spot on in one take. He was a great singer.
Ahhh...that killer smile he flashes at the end there!!!! He was so handsome! I really wish I had the chance to see him perform, unfortunatly I was only a baby when he died.
@civilwardoc1 it's not true that free basing cocaine caused the plane crash. that rumour was refuted by a year long investigation by the National Transit Safety Board. the plane had a history of mechanical problems, Rick Nelson had a fear of flying and only flew because travelling by bus wasn't a convenient alternative. He would not endanger himself or his band and fiance further by indulging in such a dangerous activity as free basing cocaine.
@darius595 If I recall correctly the crash was caused by a fire in the aircraft that was started by a malfunctioning heater. I think it was a privately owned DC-3 and the heater was fueled by kerosene
My dad and mom mentioned him as the most handsome in his time. It took me 30 years to find out. Yup, they are right, he's really gorgeous, even before the make up and touch up, wow ..........
I'm so glad I was raised in the 50's with such great songs and singers as Ricky, Bobby Vinton, Elvis and many more. Kids raised today don't have a clue, I feel sorry for them.
I'm so glad I grew up in the 50's. The music was great and so original, so much better than the stuff of today. Nelson here, Bobby Vinton, Elvis, they were all great. Kids today don't have a clue. I actually feel sorry for them. Thanks for this posting!
Hey guys, I am another straight man who cannot deny that Rick was just one good looking dude. I've read many of these post on all his songs and videos and this is more then just the general consensus. Rick had plenty of girls waiting in line for him. Ron
Of all his songs, this one was my favorite! Old Ricky had some demons but he sure looks clean cut and wholesome here. It was a simple a good time when Dems and Reps didn't hate each other as they do now. If I were a time traveler, I'd go back to the days of Ricky Nelson and get a job.
Elvis Loved this guy!

The great James Burton on guitar..and I think that's Richie Frost on drums and Joe Osbourne on bass???
BeatleJim55 11 months ago
Of course he's miming to the recording...
BeatleJim55 11 months ago
WOW!!! And that was 'live'.!!!.. no remixes, overdubs and a faultless recording without any electronic digital paraphernalia whatsoever. Just a good honest voice, fabulous backup vocals and guitar.
1ausskipper 1 year ago

He would not endanger himself or his band and fiance further by indulging in such a dangerous activity as free basing cocaine.
darius595 1 year ago
@darius595 If I recall correctly the crash was caused by a fire in the aircraft that was started by a malfunctioning heater. I think it was a privately owned DC-3 and the heater was fueled by kerosene

Music's a little generic and derivative, his voice is nice, but doesn't have range. But, no doubt he's a handsome man, the drummers a looker himself.

We need some one who can sing to re introduce America to this genre of music . Its
pure, voices and harmonies, touch the heart like nothing else Ive ever heard since.
They say you cannot go back. Why not! Music today sucks, and this stuff is great!
