Love Joan's notes. Maria's first C#6 was great and the preceding coloratura was insane. Cabelle's pianissimo is wonderful and Ewa Podles is a marvel. Price's first C#6 was just beautiful.
Ewa Podles is a freak. the core of her voice is a deep, chocolately contralto but she sings high Cs, Ds and Ebs with perfect, easy placement and spinning overtones that would put many coloratura sopranos to shame.
Dear God, Sutherland on that first clip. The roulades are absolutely perfect, and you could almost hear that high Db vibrate the walls! Nilsson, I didn't even know recorded anything above a C. And it's so forceful! Makes me wonder if she had a high D, E, or F. I remember reading somewhere she used to warm up to "Der Holle Rache" - I wonder if that included the high Fs. :P
@ChrisStockslager I believe that was more the echo effect from the studio recording that gave the illusion of the high D vibrating the walls. What amazing nuances and enhancements a studio recording can do for a coloraturas voice, that's why there's nothing like a live recording to see what a singer really has..
-Poor Montsi in her early years needed only a slight pause before switching to her "miraculous" falsetto top register later on it would take her about 5 secs
@LohengrinT Leontyne's Db6 is from the 1962 studio recording with Leinsdorf conducting. Please also take note of that full bodied Db6 she unleashes in the Empress Awakening Scene. It's a marvel!
@LohengrinT I don't know if Caballe was a miraculous falsetto or was not, the truth is that their pianissimi be have heard even outside the Opera House, I saw her once in Stockholm singing Semiramide, somewhat older at 88, It was a wonderful thing.
On the other hand, why my beloved Nilsson sings a high C # in the "lama" when is written a high C??
Wonderful L. Price in Die Frau ohne Schatten and Maria Callas in Lucia
bravooooooooooooo its great i want moreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee love your videos :) brava CALLASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS :)

@sicuro75 I dunno, Sutherland's voice had that kind of ping live, so that may not be studio trickery.

-Leontyne's Db6 in Quanto cielo is simply amazing - what year is that from?
-Nilsson 4:33 now this is a fantastic exhibition of high and real low voice
-Bartoli had forgotten to gargle in the morning so she decided to do it in the studio? what a lol vocalization that I am sure she is quite proud of
-Renee's flawless Db6 at 1:20 - perfection
-Poor Montsi in her early years needed only a slight pause before switching to her "miraculous" falsetto top register later on it would take her about 5 secs

@BZBlaner I find that high not in the Empress Awakening Scene a little forced.
